America's First Daughter
America's First Daughter: A Novel | Stephanie Dray, Laura Kamoie
In a compelling, richly researched novel that draws from thousands of letters and original sources, bestselling authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie tell the fascinating, untold story of Thomas Jeffersons eldest daughter, Martha Patsy Jefferson Randolpha woman who kept the secrets of our most enigmatic founding father and shaped an American legacy. From her earliest days, Patsy Jefferson knows that though her father loves his family dearly, his devotion to his country runs deeper still. As Thomas Jeffersons oldest daughter, she becomes his helpmate, protector, and constant companion in the wake of her mothers death, traveling with him when he becomes American minister to France. It is in Paris, at the glittering court and among the first tumultuous days of revolution, that fifteen-year-old Patsy learns about her fathers troubling liaison with Sally Hemings, a slave girl her own age. Meanwhile, Patsy has fallen in lovewith her fathers protg William Short, a staunch abolitionist and ambitious diplomat. Torn between love, principles, and the bonds of family, Patsy questions whether she can choose a life as Williams wife and still be a devoted daughter. Her choice will follow her in the years to come, to Virginia farmland, Monticello, and even the White House. And as scandal, tragedy, and poverty threaten her family, Patsy must decide how much she will sacrifice to protect her father's reputation, in the process defining not just his political legacy, but that of the nation he founded.

This is the story of Martha (Patsy) Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jeffersons daughter, told from her perspective, based on letters and original sources. It focuses mostly on Patsy's devotion and protection of her father. A very good historical fiction. (see below for the rest)
One more book in for #AwesomeApril thanks for hosting @Andrew65

#BookSpinBingo

Make a great day everyone 😊

bthegood A few things stand out - Patsy is a strong woman, especially for that time period; people could be cash poor but own land and slaves and be government officials; Jefferson comes off as weak and narcissistic throughout most of his dealings with his children and other people; while the Jeffersons were progressive in their views on slavery (feeling it should be abolished) they kept slaves for financial security throughout their lives. 12mo

There should be a trigger warning for characters who lose a parent and have to shove their grief aside to care for the remaining parent. It‘s a very specific trigger, but still powerful.

Trying to read this today. Half way through & bookclub is Wed. Not that invested. Not sure why, but the characters are just not speaking to me. It is fascinating that the novel is based on surviving letters. Will be interested in what others think at book club. It is a portrait of female subjectivity, slavery at that time but not new to me so I almost feel detached.

Loved this insight into Thomas Jefferson 's life through his dsughter's eyes. She did more than we will ever know to help start our country.
The author included several facts that made the past realistic vs romantic and made me so glad that women have more rights now.

Patsy Jefferson Randolph is a character I've not thought much about, which makes a novel based on her life interesting. Thinking of historical figures as people w/flaws & drama instead of giant historical figures was fun. But it drags when ideas/events repeat themselves. Honestly, describing some relationships w/slaves as loving or romantic made me uncomfortable enough to take me out of the story several times. Interesting, but I wouldn't revisit.

Behind every great man there is an even greater woman.

Truly made me stop and think. Jefferson through the eyes of his daughter/biggest champion, Patsy. All the accomplishments and flaws of the Jefferson family are laid bare. Convincing look into the contradictory mind of an 18th century woman.

Sally Hemings is interwoven as a graceful mistress (although not sure how one can be a mistress when enslaved.) Most painful aspect to me.

Enlightening.

Maggie_Reads Loved this book! I read their newest about Eliza Hamilton recently. Also very good. 6y

Finally have a little time to myself during this family road trip through Virginia - perfect setting to read about one of the most famous Virginia families in history.

Going through ups and downs with this book - seeing a lot of negative aspects to Jefferson (battling with the historian in me that is in awe of Jefferson as a revolutionary) about 30% in and story is starting to grab my attention.

I enjoyed this novel... historical fiction that is based on some thorough research into the life of Thomas Jefferson‘s oldest daughter, Patsy. The book takes us through Patsy‘s life before, during, and after the war for American #Independence and the choices she makes for her father and the new nation. I thought the book was maybe a bit too long, but it‘s very well written and in-depth.

Loved everything about this book. It was so interesting. Patsy Jefferson, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson lived a full and fascinating life. Especially found interesting, the parts regarding her relationship with Sally Hemmings and her general view of slavery.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many of our founding fathers were against slavery, yet it continued on for generations. 😡

MisterWhitaker This is an interesting book. I'm glad they mention Hemmings, but I wonder how the first daughter felt about her siblings who were born slaves? Is that addressed? That would be a powerful parallel read! 6y
sammisho @MisterWhitaker it does address the sibling relationship and how Patsy felt about that. It also address Jefferson freeing his children born into slavery, but not Sally. I did not realize that Sally was Jefferson's late wife's half sister, and they strongly resembled each other. Patsy was characterized as being very sympathetic to Sally. Patsy and her father were against slavery but never spoke up publicly. Which was infuriating to read about. 6y
