Nettle and Bone
Nettle and Bone | T. Kingfisher
WINNER OF THE HUGO AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL 2023 After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra--the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter--has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself. Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince--if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning. On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.

A dark fairy tale about a princess who wants to save his sister from her abusive husband. Interesting characters, together and separately. Compelling story. Clever writing. Another case of #authoramonth helping me broaden my horizons.

Even though you know how the plot is supposed to end, it still takes you by surprise! Princess Marra, now almost a nun, sets out to save her sister married to a brutal prince. She completes magical tasks and hooks up with an insane entourage—all of whom bring something special to the group, and yet in no way could possibly pull off their plan. And they meet up with some creepy characters along the way, too. Other than Marra‘s excessive ⬇️

Texreader apologizing and stammering, I found all the other characters endearing, especially Bone Dog and Finder. Agnes can be quite fun, too. I mean, how can you not? If I had a wish, it‘d be Marra growing more mature than she did by the end. This is a really good book even if it took awhile to get on its feet. #authoramonth @Soubhiville 5d

#WeeklyForecast

Starting Nettle & Bond tomorrow for #AuthorAMonth. It will be my first Kingfisher so I have no idea what to expect.
Picked up The Paris Express after setting it aside early last year. So far I‘m finding it more engaging. Washington I‘m reading a few chapters a day. Liking Mob Queen and Shirley is a bit of a slog so far. Next up should be my library books for TOB26. It feels like it should be a good reading week.

Another lovely fairy tale from Kingfisher, this time not a retelling but an original story filled with fairy tale tropes such as evil princes and fairy godmothers. Thoroughly enjoyable. I can always count on T. Kingfisher for a good, reliable read.

A dark fairy tale but a hopeful one, too. The cast of characters were delightful! Mara, the protagonist, is perhaps the least interesting character, but in a way, that also makes her relatable and easy to cheer for.

The MC (a princess who is almost but not quite a nun) sets out to save her sister from the prince she is married to. An interesting cast of characters including a dog made of bones and wire, and a demon chicken. A cosy story filled with magic.

And yes the MC is naive and hard to believe she is 30… but I enjoyed it anyway 🤣

Did May feel extra-long to anyone else?

Idle Grounds was my favorite! Sneaky & feverish.

Nettle & Bone is a *magical* listen.

I Hope This Finds You Well was a delightful change of pace.

Unraveling, though a reread, was spun as well as I remembered. Fascinating & timely, in a world that desperately needs more climate justice.

Marmalade is great in small spoonfuls. Dip in & out.

My heart is still recovering from Juno Loves Legs. It‘s visceral.

Marra, who is not-quite-a-nun & barely a princess, learns that her eldest sister was killed by her husband, the prince. Her middle sister is now married to the same man, crowned king; she stays pregnant to keep him from beating her — or at least hold him back a bit. Marra vows to save her sister, loosening the political noose around her neck, by killing the monster. She assembles a band of not-so-merry, magical misfits to aid her in her quest.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: This was my first T. Kingfisher. It won‘t be my last. Two words: “tooth. dancer.” That fantastically discomfiting imagery won‘t soon be forgotten. Amara Jasper‘s audiobook narration is pretty fab, too (with the exception of the way she pronounces, “Eh?”). 8mo
monalyisha 2/3: At first, I griped about repetition & Marra‘s immaturity but any complaints were soon quelched (though I could‘ve done without the “cursed child” character; evil puppets have never really done it for me). Soon enough, I yielded to total immersion in the story. 8mo
monalyisha 3/3: While not shying away from darkness, the tale somehow maintains a cozy vibe. And, as an added perk, the words Kingfisher chooses to end with are perfect. She leaves the story open to the possibility of further development while still providing a satisfying resolution. 8mo
shanaqui I really don't know how Kingfisher manages to put darkness and cosiness together so well. It's a consistent *thing* through all her books I've read: somehow it's cosy reading even when it's also dark and awful. 8mo
PlutoReads I will read anything by Kingfisher. 8mo

Finished yesterday for #Roll100 (#90 Any Backlist) & as a prompt for my #OUABC 2025 40 Book Challenge (Any Hugo Award Winner). I loved this one! T. This quote from T. Kingfisher's “Nettle & Bone“—“Nothing is fair, except that we try to make it so. That's the point of humans, maybe, to fix things the gods hadn't managed“—really spoke to me. I've often felt life, in general, is unfair. Some are handed fortunes, while others face hardship simply due to birth, time, or place. As humans, our best effort is to level the playing field and fight for the marginalized.

Witchy vibes for October! I will admit that I was a bit annoyed we had to have a big strong man in this lovely story of women adventuring to save one of their sisters. I loved the characters here, even MC Marra who often felt a bit juvenile for 30, but her lifestyle explained this. The animals really made the book the demon hen, bone dog and little Finder chick. What a fun cast. A quick and easy read that has .e reaching for the book each day!

Not only was this a great story, look how beautiful the cover under the dust jacket and the end papers are!

This is a modern fairytale, not a retelling but Kingfisher‘s own creation. Characters I couldn‘t help rooting for, including a dog that the main character Marra crafted from bones and wire. I loved that there were also chickens who played a part!

I needed an easy read & this fitted the bill perfectly. A fantasy that reads like a modern fairytale with found family & great side characters. Marra is the youngest princess of the Harbour Kingdom. Her oldest sister is promised to the Prince of a more powerful neighbour kingdom. When her sister dies Marra suspects something is terribly wrong. This is lighter and faster moving than it might sound. Sweet with some bone magic & a few ghosts.

Mara is sent to a nunnery, not to become a nun but to be protected. To make sure she has no children, takes no husband , and is there in case the prince needs a third wife. Mara spends 15 years in the nunnery living her life, waiting for something. Her first sister died

LibrarianRyan within a few months of marrying the prince. Her second sister has been married to the prince for a very long time. They‘ve had one child, who unfortunately dies at approximately the age of 10 from the plague. What happens when the fairytale turns bad? When the Princess is a victim of domestic violence from her husband the Prince? What if you are Marra and have already lost one sister and your last remaining sibling is walking the very same path?

As you sit with Maara as she builds her bone dog, meets a grave witch, reunites with her fairy godmother and enters the goblin market, it's impossible to not get wrapped up in this fantasy land.
