Fun! I will certainly continue with the series.
Fun! I will certainly continue with the series.
A nice twist on the Sherlock Holmes story. Charlotte Holmes doesn‘t want to marry and does something that ruins her and her family‘s reputation to prove it. She leaves home and meets an interesting woman and becomes her “lady‘s maid.” In truth, they set up shop to do something completely unexpected. #SeriesLove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView
With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London. When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name.
Generally enjoyed this for its historical setting and its take on the classic sherlock Holmes mystery.
However, it was a little bit convoluted at bits but hopefully this is just the first book ironing out it's kinks.
Having read Doyle‘s original recently, this feminist take on Sherlock is a delight. The social conditions necessitating the ruse are not.
I really enjoyed this one and loved the characters. The author really brought the time period to life and I loved how plucky she was. A really fun read! @stillcurious
I really enjoyed this one with the #pemberlittens this month.
I've never read any Sherlock Holmes but have seen plenty of adaptations and I liked this gender swapped retelling. The set up was a bit slow, but once all the characters were introduced the mystery picked up. I'm looking forward to continuing this series in the future
#SeriesLove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView
I liked the idea of this story, should I say a retelling? A female Sherlock Holmes. I didn‘t know what to expect of this book before I read it. But the was in love with the cover😍it ends that I liked the mystery, the characters the plot. That person was terrible, can‘t say without spoiler the book🤐What I say is I have already book #2👌
Great choice @Staycurious #Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent 3/3.5⭐️
I liked this version of Sherlock Holmes. #ByddyRead #JaneAdjacent #TributetoOtherClassics with @StayCurious I got one bingo spot on #ISpyBingoJanuary and some Readathons #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove24 #JumpStart2024

Read with #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent group. I started this in audiobook which was charming but a tad hard for me to follow unless I was fully concentrating. When my library e-book hold came in, I switched to it & I think I prefer it that way. Although a bit disjointed at times, I quite enjoyed this 1st book & will continue the series as I loved the characters & want to see where the story goes next.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.22: looks like our suspicions were correct- Moriarty has been identified. How interesting! And the revelation about Mrs Watson and Ashbourne‘s friendship- that, I didn‘t see coming. A good way to end the book and start the series. I‘m definitely hooked on these characters. Overall I found some parts were a bit confusing but I was definitely intrigued, I appreciated the historic setting and I couldn‘t stop reading!
I was not sure what to think of this at first - the writing style, the construct of the narrative is very different than other mysteries. And yet, as the pieces came together, I was hooked. It‘s a really interesting puzzle that Thomas writes in homage of Sherlock Holmes. It also sets up the series. I‘m looking forward to reading more! #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent

#JaneAdjacent This was a fun read! On the low end of a pick for me because there were too many chapters where I wasn‘t that interested and kept wishing we‘d hurry back to the main story. But I adored most of the characters, and I found the nods to the original Sherlock story charming. @StayCurious
January 29 #NewYearNewBooks Involves Poison This one I'm reading for #PerberlittensAdjacent #BuddyRead fills the bill. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Apparently I‘m in my football era. I loved this reworking of Sherlock Holmes - I‘m looking forward to going on with this series. It makes me think of the series Miss Scarlet and the Duke which I love ❤️ thx to @StayCurious for picking this to read
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.21: So Mr.Sackville had dark secrets, and his death really was connected to the two society ladies. Everything has been laid bare and will soon be made public. Looks like Charlotte will no longer be the main source of gossip in upper London society. I feel bad for Lord Sheridan - now he‘ll have to be alone with what happened within his family.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.20: while things are still clear as mud, at least we finally see a connection between the Marbletons and Mr.Sackville‘s death. Now we know why the author branched off. I still don‘t know the full extent of what happened but I‘m definitely intrigued. Now, if Treadles has figured out that Charlotte is Sherlock, will he still work with her?
This was an interesting take of a Sherlock Holmes story. Some parts were good but some parts were not as interesting to me. However, I was not expecting the ending even though I kind of figured out who the culprit was. 3⭐️
#buddyread #bookspinbingo
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.19: more questions! I‘m so eager to see where this will lead. First, with who the Marbletons are - are they journalists seeking a story, or a band of con artists - or have we met Moriarty? What is their interest with Charlotte Holmes? And second, where on earth did Lady Shrewsbury go that night? Also, did I read it right that Ash sometimes works as a spy for his brother?
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent I‘m finding myself a bit more interested in the investigative work by Treadles than in the sudden side plot with Charlotte and Mrs.Marbleton. Unless Marbleton has something to do with the man following Charlotte. If she doesn‘t end up having anything to do with our main case then I will feel as though the author veered a bit off course. ⬇️
3✨ Having a lady Sherlock was a fun concept especially in a time when this type of woman would not be desired. I liked the main story, but got lost when there was side mysteries. The blend of them together made it hard to try to figure out the mystery. #PemberLittens @StayCurious
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.16: I love seeing Charlotte start her business of helping people. These mini mysteries are so interesting! But…let‘s get back to the main event. Who killed Sackville and the other ladies? I haven‘t the foggiest so far. At least, I don‘t see how they were connected.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.15: so someone was cruelly and slowly poisoning Sackville but they grew impatient and went for a faster acting poison. Poor guy! And upon closer inspection, not is all what it seems in the household who served him. I think Becky Birtles is definitely a key element here. I think Meek‘s past is just a sad coincidence.
#TitleBeginsWithS #NewYearNewBooks @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks All the read/currently reading “S” books from my Jan TBR.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent So sorry I missed posting yesterday! Ch.13: what a complicated history Charlotte and Ash have! They clearly love each other but can‘t be together. And their feelings are so complex. So sad. But an enlightening chapter for sure. Ch.14: Oh, we finally get the idea for Charlotte - as Sherlock - to offer up her services to the public. ⬇️
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.12: Again, Charlotte shows off her ”powers” and poor Treadles must have been quite embarrassed. No one talked about money back then - it was seen as crass. But she had a point to prove I suppose. Still, Treadles and Alice are #CoupleGoals. The plot thickens as Holmes makes mention of tampering with the supplies of strychnine. But how easily could that have been done? What kind of diabolical murderer is behind this?
Alright I couldn‘t help it. I skipped ahead on the buddy read. The story got too good to put down. I really enjoyed it and am sorry it‘s done. I absolutely love Charolette‘s Holmes character. I adore her relationship with Watson and Lord Ingram. The mystery was good too. There was good character development with an excellent plot. I‘m definitely going to read more in this series and I have already recommended to others. Thank you Pemberlittens!
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.11: what a great arrangement for Charlotte but also for Mrs.Watson - who needs something to do and someone to do it with. And Charlotte is safe and sound for the moment. But what‘s this? Now her father may be a suspect in lady Amelia‘s death? This family needs to stop having scandals in public.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch10: Charlotte makes the acquaintance of Mrs Jebediah - who isn‘t really named Mrs Jebediah - who seems like an interesting and vibrant lady with an intriguing past. I sense she will be an important character in our story. Will she offer Charlotte a job and save her from having to get help from the men in her life?
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch. 9: I think Treadles is a solid cop with good instincts. He asks the right questions. His association with Holmes would only speed things up I think, because he‘s not stupid and does his due diligence. I can‘t believe there was a time when rich and titled people could categorically refuse to work with the police- like the family of the ladies who were killed. ⬇️
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.8: I really enjoy mysteries and procedurals so I liked this chapter of interviews and detective work from Treadles. Poor Mr. Sackville - by all accounts a good man. So who wanted him dead? And did that person also kill the two ladies in London?
Well, I made small progress on my #JoyousJanuary goals. I have caught up on #Pemberlittens Buddy Read. I did read some more of Return of the King and The Adventures of Tom Bombaldi for #FellowshipofTolkien The night is still young!
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.7: we finally see Charlotte use her Sherlockian brain when she reveals Mrs Wallace‘s secret. Still, it didn‘t help her situation much despite getting her money back. She has no place to live and what if Mrs Wallace tells about her past to other boarding houses in the area? Charlotte is in a very precarious position. Will she need to ask for help? From Ashbury perhaps?
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch. 6: I am interested to learn more about Ash and Charlotte‘s relationship. Unrequited love? Perhaps more on his part? How intriguing. In any case, he‘s still interested in helping Holmes despite everything that has happened.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.5: with no work prospects and her finances fast depleting, Charlotte is worried, but hiding it well. Then she overhears the gossip to do with her scandal: not only is Lady Shrewsbury dead, but she had an argument with Livia shortly before she died. Charlotte soon realizes that she may need to use her talents at deduction - not only to help herself, but to save her sister.
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.4: her reputation in tatters, Charlotte decides to run away and make her way in the harsh world of London. I wonder at her confidence. Does she know how cruel the city can be to unsuspecting females? Livia is - and rightfully so- terrified for her sister. Is Charlotte too smart for her own good or does she have a plan?
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.3: I like inspector Treadles and his charming wife. One wonders at Holmes‘ relationship with Lord Ingram. Was he her mysterious first kiss? How did they meet and how did he come to know her as Sherlock?
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Ch.2: we meet the Holmes family and most importantly, Charlotte. She is definitely more than she seems. A lot happens in this chapter, and we learn a bit about who Charlotte is and we learn why Charlotte jumped into bed with that buffoon. She was certainly misguided though- I‘m not sure she fully thought her plan through. ⬇️
#Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent Prologue and Ch.1: well…shocking events have taken place! We are thrown right into a scandal - the likes of which would rock Victorian London society and surely destroy lives. We meet an array of characters - but I‘m not sure yet how each will fit into this story. Obviously more is happening than we are led to believe. Read on!
#SeriesLove2024 #ReadAway2024 #Pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent I really enjoyed this first book in the Lady Sherlock series. I like the fact that all the characters aren‘t just gender-reversed, but have wonderful personalities all their own. Excellent mystery.
repost for @StayCurious
#Pemberlittens thanks for a great voter turnout for our next #JaneAdjacent read! Funnily enough this will be more Sherlock-Adjacent - which I think will be fun. There are a ton of books that pay homage to literary characters. I‘ve decided to go back to 1 ch. a day with this b/c some of the chapters are a bit lengthy. We‘ll be starting Jan 8. Let me know if you want to be tagged in my daily posts!

I was uncertain about this audiobook during the first 1/3 as there was a lot of set up that happened in a way I was a bit confused with at first. It all began to come together and became an enjoyable read. I will definitely be continuing on with the series.
Enjoyable listen
I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan? When I saw this series I could not resist a Lady Sherlock Holmes. i look forward to reading the rest of the Lady Sherlock Series.
Excellent. And now I have a new series to become embroiled.
I'm not going to say this was bad but it didn't grab hold of me like I expected it would. I hear great things about this series so I'm not sure if I'm ready to give up hope just yet but I don't think I'm in a hurry to grab the next book
