Finished last week, this book was sweet & cute & exactly what I needed for a crazy week at work & the insanity of the world. It was a good mood enhancer in between some tougher books too. I love the escape of cozy fantasy where good prevails. Caz & Meep were adorable & it made me crave tea with bread and jam. A hug in book form. 💚💚💚

Here‘s my March recap. It was a great reading month & I finished 23 books! (Including 5 audiobooks, 19 fiction, 4 NF, many genres, several children‘s & classics)

I read for #SundayBuddyRead #NancyDrewBR #BobWhiteBuddies #EBBR #AuthorAMonth #ChildrensClassicRead2025 #SheSaid #RiseUpReads #JaneAustenThenAndNow #BookedInTime #FoodAndLit #Roll100 #ThematicCozies #FictionalTraveler #MonthlyNonFiction #SeriesLove2025 & #AuldLangSpine #SeriesLove2025 ⬇️

DebinHawaii …My favorites of the month were The Frozen River, Nettle and Bone, Kills Well With Others, Not That Bad, All Systems Read & Pride and Prejudice (reread for the zillionth time) & The Great Gatsby (hadn‘t read since high school) was a surprise winner. Lots of series books too—including both the 1940 & 1976 versions of our monthly Nancy Drew title. (edited) 4d

Pulled it out at the last minute & finished this one for #RiseUpReads Torn between So-So & Pick, I‘m going with a pick because while I grew up in Northern California & Oregon & was taught the history of the states, so much of it was white-washed & little was taught about women & the roles they played. For #Pemberlittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow

1. Reread, I‘m not sure how many times as I read it at least every 2 years, often every year… maybe 30? Format: started with the purple beauty, read mostly on my Kindle & finished with the Classics Reimagined version this weekend. I don‘t think my viewpoint has changed too much except for more sympathy for Mary over the years.

2. Elizabeth of course! 💜 Darcy by the end.😉

3. Elizabeth ⬇️

DebinHawaii … going toe-to-toe with Lady Catherine. Such badassery!
4. So many favorite quotes but “and I could easily forgive HIS pride, if he had not mortified MINE.” Is just perfection
5. Ride in the rain & catch a cold & recover at Netherfield Park
6. Dinner with Caroline to see what she‘d wear. Plus I think the food would be better-I feel like Lady C would not have her food seasoned well! 🤷🏻‍♀️ ⬇️
1w
DebinHawaii … 7. It‘s close, but Wickham is worse for me.
8. A girl‘s tea with Lizzy, Jane & Mrs. Gardiner. 🫖 No to Mr. & Mrs. Bennet & Mr. Collins.
9. I watched the 1995 series once this month & 2005 twice (it‘s shorter!). While I get the appeal of Matthew Macfadyen, Colin Firth is forever my Darcy.💜

I finished this one last night for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 & it‘s a soft pick for nostalgia for the author. I found it too long & disjointed with it being separate stories really rather than cohesive chapters. It could be because I waited for the end of the month & was hurrying a bit but I had a hard time keeping track of all of the family & other characters. It did have some charming moments though.

I was thinking about this book the other day. A coworker wanted me to read it with her after I moved to Hawaii. #Read2025

Finished today for #SheSaid March & it‘s one of those books you can‘t really like because it‘s so damn frustrating especially in our current world but it also an important read. I missed Manne‘s previous book Down Girl but I understand that this book builds & expands on it & focuses on male entitlement & how patriarchy “punishes women for not giving men the moral goods to which they are, by the terms of our social contract entitled.”⬇️

DebinHawaii … Published in 2020, the examples like the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, incel gun rampages, and the #MeToo movement are still relevant in 2025 since little has changed & we have even gone further backwards in some respects. Still reading this book, spreading the message & most importantly acting on it are the only ways to bring about change. 1w

#Read2025

So in high school I absolutely did not like The Great Gatsby & thus over the years never picked up more Fitzgerald, content in my dislike. We had two #SundayBuddyRead books that put the author in a more favorable, sympathetic light & I decided it was time to go back again & reread TGG after a (cough) few decades of life 😉 & picked it as my #FictionalTraveler March pick for #BigCity. Surprise! I quite enjoyed the book this time. ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I suppose I‘ll attribute it to being more open-minded about morally ambiguous characters like Gatsby, understanding wanting something/someone so badly, &/or just being more appreciative of well-written prose, but it was not at all a chore to read & at the end of the day, I think it‘s a great book. (I still despise Tom & Daisy mind you). And something interesting to me now is when Tom is describing their honeymoon & Daisy loving him, he says, ⬇️ (edited) 2w
DebinHawaii … “Not at Kapiolani?” & “Not that day I carried you down from the Punch Bowl to keep your shoes dry?” So I am now convinced that Tom & Daisy‘s 3-month South Seas honeymoon trip included Oahu & Hawaii. Again, probably just interesting to me. Anyway, I am pleased with adult me for having grown & will probably try more Fitzgerald in the future! 😉 2w

#Read2025

This book get big bonus points for the descriptive writing about the food, fashion & especially design & decor. It also gave a good look at the fascinating history of the Greenbrier Resort & the work of designer Dorothy Draper. Why the so-so rating? The author tried too hard for a romance & HEA for Draper that just wasn‘t needed & required too many fictional liberties that took away from the rest. Also, much of pleasure I took from ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the book was due to @TheBookHippie ‘s research & discussions she leads with the #SundayBuddyRead & not attributable to the author at all. It wasn‘t bad—it was a good diversion & I‘m glad I read it, but I remain disappointed it let me down at the end & with the author‘s note about her liberties & what she left out about Draper. I wanted more history than this historical fiction delivered. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

I started this in February for #AuthorAMonth Roxane Gay after Bad Feminist didn‘t get it completed but wanted to keep reading even if it doesn‘t count. You can‘t really like or love a book of raw essays on rape culture but it can be appreciated & the authors for their bravery & honesty. I think it‘s rare to be a woman who hasn‘t had an experience with harassment, violence & sexual aggression on some level so it‘s a triggering & ⬇️

DebinHawaii … hard to think back on my own experiences that I shrugged off as “not that bad” instead of realizing that they were bad & we‘ve been suffering too long with an acceptance of rape culture on so many levels. Roxane Gay edits the book & the essays are told from different perspectives & all are honest, powerful & moving accounts. Forgot to say I‘m adding this to #MonthlyNonFiction too. (edited) 2w

Ack! How is it almost Friday again which means it‘s time for #5JoysFriday & listing those 5 things big or small that brought you joy this week.💛

Use the #5JoysFriday hashtag & tag me in your post as well as others if you want to help spread the joy. You can use the background graphic as you like or use your own.

Tagging in some regulars to help get this Joy party started, but as always, anyone who needs a spot of joy is welcome to join in! 🤗

#MentalHealthMonday

1. Okay, I‘m tired & somewhat stressed & it‘s a Monday of a busy week.😬

2. Both. Sites like Litsy (my main social media) & certain positive accounts I follow on Instagram & TikTok have a good impact. Most of the rest of it & the news have a negative impact. I am only on Facebook for Messenger contact with my siblings & limited family updates but otherwise stay off.

3. Not total breaks but partial ones & news breaks help.

Kerrbearlib I‘m the same way with Facebook. I want to quit it altogether but I am not there yet lol. News breaks have been helpful for me too, even more so than social media breaks. 2w
Kerrbearlib I hope your week goes well! 2w

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

My #HyggeHour is being spent with the tagged book that I saw on @TieDyeDude ‘s post & my library had. It works for #FoodAndLit #Ireland & looks adorable so I was happy my library had it. I‘m also going to start Magic For Marigold for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I‘m also watching the new Shonda Rhimes series The Residence which is fun so far, drinking tea & having a couple cream soda Dum-Dums.

Not too excited ⬇️

DebinHawaii … that tomorrow is Monday & it‘s another busy week ahead with 2 trips to Hilo & the world at large (especially our country) continues to be a s@#% show, but otherwise I am okay. 😬 I do appreciate this #Hygge wind-down time on Sundays before the madness starts. 2w
TheBookHippie Shit show indeed… I like the pause as well. 2w
AllDebooks @DebinHawaii I'm so glad it helps reset you for tge week ahead. Honestly, I find it a real sanity saver. I've started incorporating it into routine on really stressful days. Even 10-15 minutes helps. 😊 2w

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

Finished today & it was a rollicking good time & maybe even more enjoyable than the first book! I love Billie, Natalie, Helen & Mary Alice & their brains, snarky wit & general badassery. Friendship & found family (be still my ❤️ Taverner & his cooking skills) make these books endearing. The mystery & thrills are fun & I loved the settings & food descriptions. I got a little worried at the ending that there would not be⬇️

DebinHawaii …more books in the Killers of a Certain Age series but it looks like the author still feels there are stories to tell & I will be enthusiastically along for the ride. I‘m returning my library e-book Lian a couple days early so the next reader can start enjoying. If you haven‘t read the first book, start here: 3w
