Nice end-world premise. A spaceship lands on earth and otherworldly cells, called neocytes, somehow invade the human body, producing in it a change in its physical makeup. Everyone is offered the opportunity to live forever. How many accepted? What happens to those who accepted? To those who declined? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

NikkiM5 Sounds interesting. 3y
CaffeineAndCandy @NikkiM5 it‘s unique and entertaining. A fresh take on the apocalypse. As with almost every other post-apocalyptic world, people become hostile and dangerous and live in a survival-of-the-fittest type of way. The climax is pretty actiony. (edited) 3y

Here we are with more parallels between the Bible and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

After his resurrection, Aslan goes to the witches home (page 182) and there he frees those who have been turned into stone. Similarly, Jesus, "After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned sprirts" (1 Peter 3:19) that were in Sheol or hell.

CaffeineAndCandy Aslan freed a giant who was turned into stone, and following his newfound freedom the giant says, "Bless me! I must have been asleep." Those who are dead in Christ are also said to be asleep. "And if Christ had not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost 4y
CaffeineAndCandy 👆 (1 Corinthians 15:17-18) 4y
CaffeineAndCandy At the end of the story the people of Narnia shout, "Ling live King Peter! Long live Queen Susan! Long live King Edmund! Long live Queen Susan!" (Page 199) Those who believe Jesus is the Son of God and that he died for our sins will be made into royalty when Jesus returns. "...and had made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." ( Revelation 1:6) 4y
See All 11 Comments
CaffeineAndCandy On page 166 Aslan allows himself to be bound at the White Witch's command, "though, had the Lion chosen, one of those paws could have been the death of them all. But he made no noise.. " Jesus also could have saved Himself when he was on the cross, but he too mowed himself to be bound. "Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him." (John 18:12-13) 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Page 168 says, "And they surged around Aslan, jeering at him, saying things like 'Puss, puss! Poor pussy,' and 'How many mice have you caught today, cat?' and " Would you like a saucer of milk, pussums?'" Luke 22:63-65 reads, "The men who were holding Jesus in custody taunted him while they beat him. They blindfolded him and asked him, repeatedly, 'Prophecy! Who hit you?' Insulting him, they said many other horrible things against him." 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Just as Satan would like for us and our family and friends to fall and go to hell, the White Witch feels the same about Peter and his siblings. On page 107 the White Witch says to Peter, '" How dare you come alone!... Did I not tell you to bring the others with you?'" 4y
CaffeineAndCandy '"Here is your brother,' Aslan said, 'and there is no need to talk about what is past.'" Aslan instructed Peter's siblings not to speak of what he had done and Peter is forgiven. Similarly we are all forgiven our sins when we confess Jesus as Lord, and He does not bring them up again. "And he sat upon the throne and said, 'Behold, I make all things new.'" (Revelation 21:5) 4y
i.besteph Thank you for tagging me! I love seeing the parallels 4y

Hi! It's a few days late, but I want to bring up some of the symbolism in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Not to be religious and hopefully noone is offended, but as you may already know, a lot of the story mirrors stories from the Bible. I will start with the story in its entirety, and we will see how overall it is akin to the Bible.

CaffeineAndCandy A child, Lucy, discovers a secret land in a wardrobe. Later, her brothers and sister also find the land of Narnia inside the wardrobe. Perhaps of it is a coincidence, but Jesus says, "...Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3-4) 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Secondly, I will discuss the characters. The professor is likened into King Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived according to the Bible. On page 53, the professor says of Lucy that, " If she had been pretending, she would have hidden for a reasonable time before coming and telling her story." Aside from King Solomon, the professor could also be likened to Sherlock Holmes because of his knowledge of the situation. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy It is odd that the White Queen, who is evil in the story, is not named the Dark Queen or the Black Queen. Then again, maybe omit is not so odd, for the Bible says, "...when I consider how Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light." (2 Cor. 11:14) 4y
See All 33 Comments
CaffeineAndCandy The White Queen is also 1/2 giants and 1/2 Jinn, which is comparable to the Nephilim in the book of Genesis. "The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown." (Genesis 6:4) 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Aslan, the Lion, is obviously likened to Jesus who is called the Lion of Judah (Rev. 5:5). Just as Aslan sacrificed himself in place of Edmund, so Jesus is said to have sacrificed himself to redeem all of humanity. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Peter in the story has a strong resemblance to Jesus's disciple Peter in the Bible. On pages 140 and 142, Peter approaches with his sword drawn. John 18:10 says, "Simon Peter therefore having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear." Peter was also the first to approach Aslan (page 140) due to the other's being afraid. Matthew 16:18 says, "...Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Lastly, Edmund sadly resembles Judas Iscariot from the Bible. Edmund was more than ready to hand over his siblings for more of the White Queen's Turkish Delight, just as Judad readily gave up Jesus for 20 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). Page 197 says that Peter is not told about the sacrifice Aslan made in place of him because, "'It would be too awful for him.'" This may be so because Judas hanged himself because of his shame (Matthew 27:5) 4y
megnews I always think of this song when I think of Aslan: https://youtu.be/h5BViw3xppE (edited) 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @MeganLindell I haven't seen the movie yet. I wanted to read the book first. That song is so pretty and the video is moving. I can only imagine how powerful the movie is! Thank you for sharing 😘🥰 4y
CaffeineAndCandy Should be 30 pieces of silver that Judas gave Jesus up for. ** 4y
Catsandbooks Unfortunately I'm just not able to keep up with the readalong at this time. Thanks though! 4y
CoffeeAndABook Thank you @CaffeineAndCandy for the insights. I had no idea there were so many parallels to the Bible. I obviously recognized Aslan‘s sacrifice and resurrection but that‘s it. How fascinating! And well done by C. S. Lewis, it really works! 👏🏼 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @CoffeeAndABook thanks for mentioning Aslan's resurrection. Can't forget that! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I knew what a lot represented the first time (as a teen), but it stood out even more this time as an adult. Even Aslan heading to the stone table with his head hanging down and then Susan and Lucy going with him was alluding back to Jesus‘s walk, the weight of the cross on his back and I thought the two on either side of him that day. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 4y
SeaToSkyes I knew the story had references to the Bible, but never realized there were so many! 4y
rwmg I first read it whrn I was about 8, and I recognised the parallels between Aslan and Jesus, but I was worried because I thought it might be mocking the Biblical story. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yes! I didn't even think about that. Nice 👌👍 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @rwmg I'm not so sure that it is mocking, I rather feel like it endorses the biblical account. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @SeaToSkyes and there are even more. I will be posting more tomorrow in a new post.👍😘 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @rwmg @CaffeineAndCandy no, it wasn‘t meant to be mocking at all CS Lewis was very intentional in his efforts to help explain Christianity to children. 4y
rwmg @CaffeineAndCandy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I recognise that now but aged 8 re-telling the story of Jesus in a fantasy world really wasn't something that occurred to me as something you could do 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @rwmg I understand that! I‘m sure it still seems scandalous to many. I know some religious groups still debate whether it was a good thing or bad for Christianity. I seem to remember there being a fuss when the newest set of movies were being made....whether it brought a greater audience that could learn more or made light of something that should be more serious. And of course, that‘s always in the eye of the beholder no matter the intent. (edited) 4y
BethM I had always known there were parallels but as a kid I thought it was just adults making something of nothing. Reading it for the first time as an adult I was astonished how thinly veiled the symbolism really was. 4y
Vansa As someone not brought up in a Christian country, or in the Christian faith,I didn't get the Christian symbolism at all when I read it as a kid.I've read about that later, so I know of it,but even in my reread now,it isn't something that strikes me at all, since I have no context for it! It's very easy for me to ignore that bit of the books, really, and if CS Lewis wanted to make the religion more accessible to children, good for all of us, we've (1/2 4y
Vansa (2/2)one of the best works of literature ever out of it. 4y
i.besteph So many parallels! All I could recognize was Aslan‘s sacrifice and Edmund representing Judas. What‘s even more great is how CS Lewis depicted that in such a simple story. I‘m loving the read along. It also helps to see your inputs on it. Thanks for hosting @CaffeineAndCandy ! 🥰 (edited) 4y
PurpleTulipGirl I was struck by the imagery of the stone table. It serves as a gathering point, and is presumably meant to invoke connections to an altar. In the Gospel according to Mark, the temple curtain is torn apart when Jesus dies. When Aslan dies, the stone table breaks in half. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @PurpleTulipGirl nice 👍Great insight 💜💜💜 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Growing up religious, the parallels were noticeable to me and even pointed out in greater detail by my father. My church even had a short Sunday school series themed around it. Looking back as someone who is now nonreligious, I have to applaud Lewis for writing an allegory that still stands well on its own without the reader having to be a believer to enjoy it. ❤️ 4y

Question: Do you think lying is a bigger deal to children than it is to adults? Is lying a big deal to all children in general, or are the children in the story a special exception?

Question: Which character are you most fond of so far?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m ahead of the group, and might just finish it up this weekend. I‘m really enjoying this, it‘s a fun trip down memory lane. I love Lucy, always have. 4y
Addison_Reads I started reading today and read the 6 chapters. In so tempted to keep reading, but I also want to take my time. My favorite of the children is Lucy, but my favorite character is Mr. Tumnus. 💚 I think lying is a bigger deal for children because of their innocence. Once they break the seal and tell a lie it's almost like a little piece of childhood is chipped away. 4y

BookwormAHN I don't think children always realize what a big deal lying is. I don't think I have a favorite character 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m loving this chapter-a-day return to a childhood fav! I think lying is a bigger deal to adults. I‘ve worked around kids for several years, and they lie about the silliest things, sometimes not realizing the gravity of the situation. Maybe it‘s today‘s generation..? Answering as if I don‘t know the rest of the series: the Professor is my fav so far. 😅 4y
megnews Like @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m having trouble stopping at one chapter but succeeded so far. I don‘t remember the chapters being so short. And like her and @Addison_Reads Lucy is my favorite. Her age makes her most open to magic. 4y
rubyslippersreads I‘m caught up. I like Lucy best but, like @Addison_Reads I also love Mr. Tumnus (especially because I‘m picturing him as portrayed in the film by James McEvoy. 😊) 4y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures This is so much fun reading a chapter a day. I have to force myself to stop reading tho 😅 I growing up I always loved Lucy, but I have really come to love Edmund as I‘ve gotten older, the poor thing, his growth throughout the book is wonderful. (edited) 4y
bookandbedandtea I agree with @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm that lying is generally a bigger deal for adults than children. At this point I like Lucy the best but by the end of the book I usually switch to someone else. 4y
BethM I‘m loving Lucy. And yeah I think kids have more of an issue with lying bc they haven‘t learned to use it as a “tool” yet. 4y
Lesanne I think lying is a bigger deal to adults, generally. Kids don‘t yet realize how lies can be damaging in the long term. And my favorite character so far is the Professor. (“What do they teach them in school these days?”) I love the chapter a day format, too! 4y
SeaToSkyes I'm a little behind, but hopefully will catch up tomorrow! 4y
Catsandbooks I'm a little behind, but planning to catch up this week. This is my first time reading the series and I'm enjoying it so far! 4y
Vansa I think lying is definitely a bigger deal to adults(at least some adults),I think it comes quite easily to kids to lie,to impress a friend,to avoid a scolding from a parent.I absolutely love Mr.Tumnus! In this case, they're horrified that Edmund lied though, and didn't back up his sister-you don't break your honour code that way! That's something that's easier to do as an adult when we can justify to ourselves that self-interest has higher stakes 4y
PurpleTulipGirl As cranky as I‘ve been lately, the Professor‘s character is definitely more relatable. I like him this time around more than I remember liking him. And I‘m really enjoying reading this again. The chapters are so short, it‘s almost like devotional reading. 4y
CoffeeAndABook I‘m really enjoying the chapter-a-day format! Even though it‘s hard to stop after each chapter, it‘s great how relaxed it is to keep up, even on busy days. * Lucy is definitively a spunky favorite ~ but the professor is a blast, his reaction to the children‘s questions just wonderfully unexpected!! I had no memory of that from reading the book as a child!! 😃 4y
BethM @CoffeeAndABook I agree on both counts! 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @Addison_Reads I agree with you about their innocence making lying a bigger deal, but I also agree with @BookwormAHN and @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm who provided insight into the nature and reasoning of children taking lies. With this in mind, lying is more often a bigger deal to adults who know right from wrong and are held more accountable for untruths. @bookandbedandtea @BethM @Lesanne @vansa 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @Lesanne yasss! Loved the part where the professor said, "What do they teach them in school these days." ??? 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @PurpleTulipGirl true, the reading does seem devotional 👍👌 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @CoffeeAndABook very relaxed reading. 🙂 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @Catsandbooks @SeaToSkyes no worries! We will be here when you catch up! 👍😘 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @rubyslippersreads I've not yet seen the movies, but I can't wait to finish reading so I can watch them! 🦁🧙‍♂️ 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @BethM "to use them as a 'tool' yet" ?? 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa how long has it been since you read the series? This is my first time. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CaffeineAndCandy I read it in Jr. High I believe, so late 80‘s...maybe 1988-ish. I didn‘t get into fantasy until about then, so I have memories of reading this on the school bus. 4y
Read4life I‘m really enjoying this readalong. I know I read these when I was very young but don‘t remember the details much. I like the professor the most so far. 4y

SeaToSkyes Can't wait to get started tonight! ❤️ 4y
CaffeineAndCandy This first chapter reminds me of The Secret Garden because the rain stopped the children from going outside and they were excited to see the birds, badgers, foxes and rabbits. 4y

CaffeineAndCandy 👍😘 @I.be.Stef 4y
CoffeeAndABook Yay 😃🙌🏼 4y
rubyslippersreads I‘m excited about this readathon because I haven‘t read the books in years. I just finished Chapter 1 and was a bit surprised to see not just one, but two warnings about what a bad thing it would be to shut oneself in a wardrobe. Probably a good idea, since I‘m sure this book sent many kids exploring. 4y
CaffeineAndCandy @rubyslippersreads ikr! I was reading and thinking that it felt unsafe to go further and further into the wardrobe. 4y
rubyslippersreads @CaffeineAndCandy Maybe it was a combination of warning kids while building tension in the story. 😂 4y

'I will not deny it. I was on the wrong side of the post. But I trusted to things coming round.'

That very popular trust in flat things coming round! Not in their being beaten round, or worked round, but in their 'coming' round! As though a lunatic should trust in the world's 'coming' triangular!
@Cuilin #whattheDickens

Cuilin I think Dickens is at his best with word play. Flat things coming round indeed. 4y
