The Mists of Avalon
The Mists of Avalon | Marion Zimmer Bradley
In Marion Zimmer Bradley's masterpiece, we see the tumult and adventures of Camelot's court through the eyes of the women who bolstered the king's rise and schemed for his fall. From their childhoods through the ultimate fulfillment of their destinies, we follow these women and the diverse cast of characters that surrounds them as the great Arthurian epic unfolds stunningly before us. As Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar struggle for control over the fate of Arthur's kingdom, as the Knights of the Round Table take on their infamous quest, as Merlin and Viviane wield their magics for the future of Old Britain, the Isle of Avalon slips further into the impenetrable mists of memory, until the fissure between old and new worlds' and old and new religions' claims its most famous victim.

One of my favorite books, The Mists of Avalon explores the Arthurian legend through a female lens. This book is full of magic, political tension, religious differences, and self-discovery. The Mists of Avalon is truly amazing!

Part 1/2
A new italian version (using charachter‘s celtic original names) of a novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley published for the first time in 1982.
A different point of view on one of the most famous story cycle of Medieval West-european literature: King Arthur and the heroes of the round table.
Marion Zimmer Bradeley gives the voice to a part of the leading charachters of the original legends who the medieval version had made dumbs: women.

Part2/2
Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, her sister Ingraine, Uter Pendragon‘s wife and Arthur‘s mother and her daughter, Morgaine, the Fairy Queen and Viviane‘s sccessor. Morgause, queen of Orkney.
They tell us the story of their wonders, pains and losses, weaving the beautiful tapestry (as Morgaine weaves Excalibur‘s sheath) of a world of ancient gods and archaic awarness. A world which at the end disappears in the mist of forgetfulness.

I didn‘t like Gwenhwyfar for most of the book but her final moments were very tear-jerky to me and I‘m trying to think about how her character arc was finally resolved. Was she being selfless, finally? Or was she just tired of running? What parts of her existence had she finally come to terms with? I can‘t stop thinking about her!

Very rarely do I get the opportunity to do anything tangible to express my contempt and intense loathing of predators. And in most cases of the question “should we separate the art from the artist?” I come down in favor of yes.

Chelsey But I‘m just so done with child sexual abuse. I‘m just done. So when I learned about the author of this book that I haven‘t even gotten around to reading yet, I just couldn‘t help myself. If I had a safe way of doing so I would burn it. It‘s a meaningless, useless protest but I‘m ok with that because it felt pretty dang great. 1y

Chelsey @olivianixonhemelt Yep. I believe it‘s actually the same essay that prompted this outburst. I think the key line is the last one. “I believe Moira Greyland. Her life matters more than any fiction.” Like I said, usually I‘m all for separating art from artist, but not this time. Especially since Moira is excluded from benefiting from any royalties. 5mo

Bookwomble @TrishB I think I've missed the boat with this book - I've had it unread since the '80s and never write got around to it, then have put it off the last decade or so precisely because of the author's abusing. I'm beginning to think I'll probably end up getting rid of it unread. 1y

(Also das geht zumindest mir so.)

Queerbeetleserin Frohe Ostern dir.

? Herrje, was ist Gwenhwyfar engstirnig. ?
