The Hangman's Daughter
The Hangman's Daughter | Oliver Ptzsch, Lee Chadeayne
Magdalena, the clever and headstrong daughter of Bavarian hangman Jakob Kuisl, lives with her father outside the village walls and is destined to be married off to another hangman's son--except that the town physician's son is hopelessly in love with her. And her father's wisdom and empathy are as unusual as his despised profession. It is 1659, the Thirty Years' War has finally ended, and there hasn't been a witchcraft mania in decades. But now, a drowning and gruesomely injured boy, tattooed with the mark of a witch, is pulled from a river and the villagers suspect the local midwife, Martha Stechlin. Jakob Kuisl is charged with extracting a confession from her and torturing her until he gets one. Convinced she is innocent, he, Magdalena, and her would-be suitor to race against the clock to find the true killer. Approaching Walpurgisnacht, when witches are believed to dance in the forest and mate with the devil, another tattooed orphan is found dead and the town becomes frenzied. More than one person has spotted what looks like the devil--a man with a hand made only of bones. The hangman, his daughter, and the doctor's son face a terrifying and very real enemy. Taking us back in history to a place where autopsies were blasphemous, coffee was an exotic drink, dried toads were the recommended remedy for the plague, and the devil was as real as anything,The Hangman's Daughteris the rollicking start to an exciting new series of historical mysteries, bringing to cinematic life the sights, sounds, and smells of seventeenth-century Bavaria, telling the engrossing story of a compassionate hangman who will live on in readers' imaginations long after they've put down the novel.

In 1659 Bavaria children are being killed, found with a mysterious sign on their bodies. Could the local midwife also be a witch?

It took me a long time to get through this as I found myself unable to concentrate on it for more than few pages at time. I will probably continue with the series but not for now.

Parts of this were a little slow and the ending seemed to tie up everything a little too nicely. For the most part, though, I enjoyed this look at the life of a hangman who's trying to save the women around him from being accused of witchcraft.

While this is historical fiction there are beads of truth. At the end of my version the author went over what was true and what was just for the story. A interesting story about a women blamed for the death of local children and accused of being a witch. The hangman aims to prove her innocent. I loved this time frame for a mystery story like this. Give it a shot.

Grabbed this as a freebie Kindle when I was stuck in a waiting room without a book. Well worth reading. A historical mystery set in seventeenth century Germany. The author is a descendent of the principal character.

Hangman Jakob Kulsl strives to prove that witchcraft is not involved in the deaths of several orphans. The citizens don‘t agree, and a midwife is charged. Can the Jakob discover the truth?

Scochrane26 I‘ve read the first 2 & really need to finish this series. I like them. 5y

Another review, another historical crime/murder mystery novel. And another hugely entertaining one as well! Translation is a little stilted occasionally but otherwise writing is simple & solid with an easy flow. Here is another dark & paradoxical anti-hero with a shady past - the hangman with a heart. Set in the time of superstition & witch trials, this has some exciting action, a well set up & solved mystery & some intriguing relationships.

Overall good story. I LOVE the way the ebook was presented. It had some fantastic colored and moving illustrations in each chapter. My biggest issue with this novel is the name. The daughter is nowhere near a main character. It's just odd. I'm hoping because it was originally written in German that they just scrapped the original title and gave the English speaking world this.🤷 #55 #2019 ##justlikeharrypotterone

julesG Sorry to disappoint, the German title was used (in translation, of course). Probably the title was chosen because books with "daughter of" titles were en vogue. 5y
kricheal @julesG HaHa! I should have actually looked it up before I posted! 5y
Texreader I remember it was a good book! But it sounds like the ebook was much more entertaining 5y

Andrew65 Really enjoyed this one, but title is strange given the story. 5y
Crash As the series goes on it focuses more on the daughter. This book is the into to her character. 5y

So... I'm only a few chapters in and I'm LOVING these moving illustrations in this book. This picture doesn't do it justice obviously because it isn't moving and litsy crop. In the book his coat is blowing in the wind and the clouds are rolling in the background. Not every picture has been motion but so far it has integrated with the story and been impressive.

I also finally finished this kindle book that I started months ago. I ended up skimming a lot. Maybe it was the translation, but I didn‘t find it that engaging. It wasn‘t bad, just kind of boring. I never got invested in the characters. And the title is misleading. The main plot isn‘t really about the daughter. Or maybe I missed something.

JoyBlue Bummer! 5y
wanderinglynn @JoyBlue A lot of people did like it. It just wasn‘t for me. 5y
Scochrane26 The 2nd one is better. A friend has read all of them, but I‘ve never gotten back to the series to read more (too much on my tbr). 5y
wanderinglynn @Scochrane26 Yeah, I probably won‘t read more. It was okay, but like you, too many other things on my TBR and too many series I liked a lot better. 5y

What I liked best about the book was the setting; seventeenth century Bavaria, Germany. I also found the main characters to be likable. Jakob Kuisl, the Hangman, his daughter Magdalena, and the young physician Simon. The story is a murder mystery in small town in which witchcraft is still believed and healing potions are suspect. The epilogue states the novel was inspired by the author's genealogy and he tried to stay true to history.

I really wanted to like this book. The story seemed interesting but something about it was off. It felt too modern for a book that takes place in the 1600s. It also dragged on too long. I wound up skimming over whole pages just trying to get to the end, and I never do that. I‘ve been in a reading rut and this was not the book to pull me out of it.

I ended up enjoying this, but it was uneven overall. I felt like it couldn‘t decide which genre it wanted to be—historical, murder mystery, suspense, hints of the supernatural but not—I‘m for genre mashups, but it felt muddled. The writing felt awkward as well, but I think that was a translation issue. The clues to the mystery were a bit clumsy, but the characters were interesting & I might pick up the next book to see how they develop further.

BarbaraJean Book 5/12 complete for #bookfitnesschallenge! Thank you to @TheReadingMermaid for the book club pick this month, motivating me to read some of those free World Book Day downloads from Amazon! Otherwise this would probably have sat on my Kindle for who knows how long! 5y

I needed to switch things up, so I decided to try out this one that‘s been in my Kindle library for a long time. I liked the setting, history, and characters, but the “mystery” was rather predictable and the prose was sluggish. Maybe it was a translation issue or maybe the original was just as chunky, but it didn‘t quite grab me. I did love the illustrations though! I‘d like to read more ebooks with interactive graphics.

toofondofbooks I've read all the books in this series. They get better and i got really attached to the characters. 6y

julesG I do not want to talk this book down. You liked it and that is great. I flicked through it a long while ago when it was coming out in German and since I am a member of the #HistoricalFictionInaccuracyAnnoyanceSupportGroup I dismissed it. I couldn't handle the inaccuracies that I noticed upon skimming the book. 6y
jenniferw88 @julesG fair enough - I would be the same with 18th Century England! 6y
julesG It's ridiculous how annoying little things can be, don't you think? But it's there. It's as if they forgot to hide a telephone box in a period film. (or the wristwatch in Ben Hur, though this one is funny meanwhile) 6y

jenniferw88 @julesG definitely! 6y
Scochrane26 I like this series but still haven‘t taken the time to read past the 2nd one. A friend has read all of them. 6y
DGRachel You would think an author would do their research first. I‘m with you @julesG on how annoying some of those things can be. It‘s like getting a splinter in your hand and having that wound get infected. There were two books last year that made me rage-y over what most people would consider minor discrepancies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
julesG @DGRachel May they take artistic liberties, but please disclaim them. 6y
GingerAntics @DGRachel I have that probably with some books. “It‘s just a little thing” or “this isn‘t a history book” or “you‘re obsessed with that.” Nope, I‘m just an historian of that time and that place and I‘m telling you half this book would not and could not happen. No, I‘m not giving it another chance when I‘m “in a better place” because the only other place I could be that would make me read it is if the history magically changed. 6y
LiztheBibliophile I loved this book. The fictional part in "historical fiction" doesn't bother me, as long as there is a great story and great writing. It's the same reason I loved 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. Accurate it is not, but what a great way to tell a story and maybe get people to follow a trail to more accurate history. 6y

A few Littens have posted about this book recently and then one of the sequels was on sale during the Black Friday Kindle-palooza, so I put this reread at the top of my “first read of 2019” list. There‘s something to be said about knowing you‘ll enjoy the first book of a new year. 😄

I love these books for not glossing over social, medical, & political issues of the time/place (mid 1600s Bavaria), while also giving you a strong mystery to solve.

A perfect book for this time of year, this is the first in the Hangman‘s Daughter Mystery series. Set in Bavaria in 1659, it follows a hangman and his family, along with the lovelorn physician. Someone is murdering children, and witchcraft is suspected. There are some graphic bits - torture scenes, for example. But, I liked this for something different.

minkyb I found it interesting as well! 6y
