The Light Between Oceans
The Light Between Oceans | M. L. Stedman
AFTER FOUR HARROWING YEARS ON THE WESTERN Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a days journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a babys cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a gift from God, and against Toms judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

I waited a long time to read this because the story sounded like a tearjerker&what a tearjerker it is.But it is so beautifully written,a joy to read each sentence, the characters are all wonderfully developed, deep&rich. The plot draws you in,the ending is satisfying. Themes are love, parenthood, loss, betrayal, war, forgiveness. What a wonderful book but oh so sad, so incredibly sad.

A great lil story. Read a lot of reviews stating this as a story of good people who made a mistake. Which is true, but the main element I took from this book was forgiveness. Of people, their mistakes, and their own mistakes. And how necessary it is in order to move foreword. Precious! 💝

Nute My irl Bookclub still talks about this book though we read it several years ago. 2y

This is a beautifully written book about the consequences of bad decisions and also about the power of forgiveness. I was initially worried that I might not enjoy it given all of the mixed reviews, but I truly did. I felt every different emotion throughout and as I approached the end, I had no idea how things would end up. But I loved it. A brilliant read. Tom Sherbourne is a wonderful character.

Started this book this morning. I bought it several years ago because of the lovely cover but I‘m just now getting around to reading it. The writing is beautiful and it plays out like a movie in my head. But I have a feeling it will have some very sad moments based on some of the reviews I‘ve seen in the past.

Tom, a lighthouse keeper and his wife make the decision to keep a child who washed up on shore.

This story would not have bothered me prior to being a mom, but as a mom, this story bothered me so much based on the decisions of Tom and his wife. It‘s a good story though.

This is two parts melodrama and one part mystery. Not so much whodunit but a wondering how they‘ll resolve an unthinkable dilemma. There‘s a side helping of character study since this is such a unique time, place, and situation. Stedman is a first-time author who skillfully blends all these elements. I hope she writing more!

This took me a while to get into but when I did I loved it. Historical fiction doesn‘t often grab me, I worry it will be too melodramatic, but I‘m grateful I stuck with it. the characters were believable and deep even in heightened situations, and the writing was very quietly beautiful. Tom stuck with me so much, I could have read about him forever and the final few pages with him had me holding my breath. Does anyone know if the movie is good?

Morning from rainy London. Woke up early so I‘m letting my bf sleep and have come to the kitchen to chain drink coffee, bundled up in layers cause the kitchen window is having a mood.

My mental health always seems to attack me in the morning, it‘s like depression gets invigorated by a nights rest and has lots of energy to mess with me. This book is a great companion, just the right amount easy to read and emotionally challenging.

Yesterday was not the best day, but I ended it by taking myself out for chicken and chips to read on my own. I‘m trying to improve my confidence going out for food on my own! The waiter gave me an odd look when I was like no I‘m not waiting for anyone, but it was lovely to get out of the flat.

BronwynMahon Hope you find your confidence to do it more often! It‘s one of my favourite things to do 😸 4y
Read-y_Picker I hope that you were just imagining that weird look. There‘s absolutely nothing wrong with dining alone. Maybe steer clear of places that are your usual if you‘re feeling particularly self conscious. 4y

Itchyfeetreader Oh and I like finding places that seats at a bar or round the kitchen so you aren‘t so visibly alone... 4y
Nute This is a challenge for many people. Why do we think that we always need to be in the company of others? I love my alone time even out in public. I agree that some activities (like dining alone) require a little more self-confidence than others. I think that it is easier to build that confidence with solo dining at breakfast or lunch times rather than dinner, but one day you probably won‘t think twice about it at any time of the day. Way to go! 4y
Avanders Ugh that‘s so annoying when waiters do that. I go out alone because I *want* to, and I will not be shamed in that. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 When they ask how many with an assumption it should be more, I almost aggressively say (with a big smile), “It‘s just me!” (With an implied: now F off! 😜). As a former waitress, responding in any way negatively to that is unacceptable. Good for you for doing this!! 🥳🤩🥰🥳🤩🥰 4y
Nute Oh, and for funky looks or comments, state simply “I‘m enjoying my own WONDERFUL company today!” I think that I might make t-shirts for both of us and send one your way so we can represent our lovely selves!😃🙌🏽 4y

This has been sitting on my shelves for years. I can‘t even remember where it came from.

What a well written and devastating story of love and loss.

The tiny island of Janus off the coast of Australia is almost its own character, as is the lighthouse there. The little family that lived there tried my ideas of right and wrong and had me reaching for tissues.

I haven‘t seen the movie. I might look for it.

What a story. Full of love and devastation.
A book where, it seems there's no chance for a happy ending for any of the characters.
I didn't like any of the characters, except Lucy, Hannah and Lucy's grandfather.
Yes people are complicated but IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO CALL THE AUTHORITIES IF YOU FOUND A BABY!
I just can't forgive Tom and Isabel.
This book was beautifully written, I'm very glad I read it. I was just frustrated the whole way through.

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Such a soul breaking story. I had much compassion for Isabel and Tom. I connected to where all the characters stood in there decisions and felt there desires & distress. Heartbreaking story with no true or right answers to a moral dilemma. I actually was waffling between a pick and so-so on this one, but mostly because of the audiobook reader, I think. (He was competent, but sometimes sounded like there were marbles in his mouth, and I kept having to adjust my volume control back and forth — too much fluctuation). A story that really makes you wonder what you‘d do in a similar situation.
