Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore
Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore: A Novel | Matthew Sullivan
When a bookshop patron commits suicide, his favorite store clerk must unravel the puzzle he left behind in this fiendishly clever debut novel from an award-winning short story writer. Lydia Smith lives her life hiding in plain sight. A clerk at the Bright Ideas bookstore, she keeps a meticulously crafted existence among her beloved books, eccentric colleagues, and the BookFrogsthe lost and lonely regulars who spend every day marauding the stores overwhelmed shelves. But when Joey Molina, a young, beguiling BookFrog, kills himself in the bookstores upper room, Lydias life comes unglued. Always Joeys favorite bookseller, Lydia has been bequeathed his meager worldly possessions. Trinkets and books; the detritus of a lonely, uncared for man. But when Lydia flips through his books she finds them defaced in ways both disturbing and inexplicable. They reveal the psyche of a young man on the verge of an emotional reckoning. And they seem to contain a hidden message. What did Joey know? And what does it have to do with Lydia? As Lydia untangles the mystery of Joeys suicide, she unearths a long buried memory from her own violent childhood. Details from that one bloody night begin to circle back. Her distant father returns to the fold, along with an obsessive local cop, and the Hammerman, a murderer who came into Lydias life long ago and, as she soon discovers, never completely left. Bedazzling, addictive, and wildly clever, Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore is a heart-pounding mystery that perfectly captures the intellect and eccentricity of the bookstore milieu and will keep you guessing until the very last page.?

I couldn't pass up this mystery that takes place in Denver, CO, especially when I read the author once actually worked at Tattered Covers Bookstore, an iconic Denver spot for bibliophiles. The mystery was intriguing with present day suicide and a long past murder. Lydia needs answers if she's ever to feel safe, but the person who really has the answers will surprise you😳

tpixie @Bookworm83 there is a Denver connection 2w
tpixie @sills I did audible with this. The clues would have been better in a book! 2w

I was wary going into this because of the mixed reviews of my Goodreads friends, but this story sucked me in and I personally found it excellent. There are two mysteries involved here and one horrific scene of a gruesome crime that will stick with me for awhile. Even though I figured out the twists early on, it didn‘t detract from my enjoyment of the story. 5⭐️ Recommended!

mrp27 I really liked this one too, especially because I used to work in a bookstore. 1mo

Spur of the moment trip to B&N and came away with several new books (my shelves are full, so I compromised and only got 4 new books) and this was one of them. It was an easy, quick read, not at all what I thought it would be about (very little to do with a bookstore) and there were some very heavy moments, but I still really enjoyed this one.

I started it this week but finished it as part of #24B4Monday readathon. It was so slow.Became interesting after page 160 with quite predictable ending. So sad in some parts.A suicide occurred in a bookstore & a lot of secrets will be revealed during the search of why he killed himself. In my opinion it was from ok to so-so but I'm glad I read it because I wanted for so long & it was in my tbrThank You @Avanders You gave me this like 1 yr ago. 3.4⭐️

Gissy @Avanders Read it because it has good parts a little slow for me but I'm still glad I read it and those sad parts were so heartbreaking😢I don't know how to explain it but in my case if the book is in my tbr I don't mind if the book is not as expected but I just want, need to read it no matter if it has low rating. I just want to discover it by myself. I love stories about books plus book has a nostalgic meaning, litsy swap given by you 😍❤️❤️❤️ 2mo

The cute cover and title are misleading. This is not any kind of cozy bookstore tale. This is a dark mystery with some horrifying elements that crept into my dreams at night. It's not a horror story, but the crime committed is...yikes. There are two mysteries going on in this book that (of course) intersect at the end. Really great.

Gnora I was also really surprised by how misleading the cover, title, and even early reviews for this one were! Very few of the reviews painted this as the thriller it really is - they made it out like a more cozy bookshop mystery. Still, while the hammer man gave me serious nightmares, I did enjoy it. 4mo
Djspens Oooh sounds good! I wouldn't pick it up based on the title, sounds too nicey nice, but I'll look into it after reading your post! 4mo

This book ended up being so much more than I expected, and I loved every minute of it! I have a tendency to pick books based on the covers or titles, and don‘t always read the description before I dive in. This book has questionable characters, suspense, family drama, a few love interests, a killer on the loose, and yes, also a bookstore. I recommend it!

“‘Joey loved it here,‘ he said. ‘Loved it. This place gave him something sacred. Gave his mind some quiet. This was his Thanksgiving table. His couch-cushion fort. He could get lost in here like nowhere else on earth. I‘m telling you this, Lydia, because in all his life, he‘d never really had that feeling before, not consistently anyway. Not to overstate it, but this store was the closest thing to a home that Joey ever had.‘”
