The Good Daughter
The Good Daughter: A Novel | Karin Slaughter
The acclaimed, bestselling author of the "genuinely exciting . . . hell-raising thriller" (New York Times Book Review) Pretty Girls, delivers another stand-alone novel in which a lawyer returns to the South to defend a teenage girl of a heinous crime. Decades after a horrific confrontation that left her mother dead and her sister traumatized, a New York-based lawyer returns to her hometown of Atlanta to assist her father save the life of a young woman accused of a school shooting.

Holy trigger warnings, Batman. There is some extremely graphic violence here, including rape, extreme violence to children, and a school shooting.

This is a gripping psychological thriller revolving around two separate crimes, one in the past (a violent home invasion) and one in the present (a school shooting). I couldn‘t put it down, even when I wanted to. Not for the faint of heart.

This one has some hard moments and are revealed just at the right time, there is a lot that can be said about this book. All I would say is that this was a difficult book to read but it had some really nice moments as well. It rightly captures the journey of the people involved in a tragedy, how it impacted their life's and how they got past it, learned to live with it.

This was a roller coaster of emotion. This is an incredibly written book.It keeps you engaged. The arc of each character is just right. The ups & downs of the sister relationship is so beautifully captured but this book is not for the squeamish bcoz the crimes commited are very detailed. The father in the dysfunctional family wins the character of d book, kind of the moral center.
This is one of those books that stays with you for a really long time.

gradcat I love Karin Slaughter‘s books—have read them all—but I think all of her books would qualify as “not for the squeamish.” She does get pretty graphic. 2d
Shamzi @gradcat this was my first of hers but definitely not the last. Can you suggest some other books by her!! 2d
gradcat I love the “Grant County” series, the first one is titled “Blindsighted.” But most people REALLY love the “Will Trent” series, the first of which is tagged below. I love them all, but Grant County does provide a huge back story for Will‘s love interest, so if you really want the whole experience, start there. Otherwise, Will & his partner Faith are SO good! ♥️ 2d
Shamzi @gradcat wow! Than you so much!! 2d

There is a twist at the end of chapter 11, not going to reveal what it is but the twist had me flustered. I did not see that coming. I stopped reading, took a while to take it all in.

I thought this was a book about two sisters and their journey through the tragedies in their life but the back drop of the school shooting mystery is equally mystifying.

I can't believe I've never read Karin Slaughter before this. I loved this emotionally charged crime centered thriller. The pacing was fantastic, and the characters felt real. The subject matter is dark, yet Slaughter paints a beautiful picture of a family broken by trauma and loss. I listened to the audiobook and found the narration to be spellbinding and heartbreaking.

TW: school shooting, graphic violence & sexual assault, miscarriage

My second Karin Slaughter book this month and again I was immediately sucked into the story. She delivers solid complex characters with great plot and interesting twists. The narrator did an amazing job and I was teary eyed in some spots. I can‘t wait to read more of her books. #TeamSlaughter #teamthemebook

I listened to The Good Daughter, an intense thriller about two vicious, fictional attacks--a break-in from the past and a school shooting in the present. The past traumatic event is covered in excruciating detail. The present is the mystery this family of lawyers is trying to solve while the past the family is trying to heal from.

I finished the audio version of this today. It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read a crime fiction. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. My only complaint is the retelling of the same events throughout the book. A new tidbit was added during each retelling but it seemed like a little too much of the same thing over and over again. But, all in all I really enjoyed the book!

I have a knack for predicting conclusions in books and movies (the only one who can tolerate watching thrillers with me is my poor husband) ... But Karin Slaughter has a knack for putting me on my ass. I thought I figured out the mystery early on, but I only had it half right. The #twists and #turns will keep you reading. The #love of family will make your heart full, the #tragedies will make you weep. #teamnosleep for #thegooddaughter

Karin Slaughter has a way with words - she writes dialogue that fits with the scenes, but it's extremely relatable to life. Another one of my favorites is, "Don't kick a fresh turd on a hot day" ... Sounds so crass but isn't it true? When ish hits the fan, isn't it better to let your mind catch up to the circumstances and then react instead of jumping to conclusions?

What do you think? #thegooddaughter #quotes

One of my favorite parts of this book so far! From Pikesville, GA, Sam is a practicing lawyer settled in NYC. Tragedy strikes bringing her and her NYC ways home. During an arraignment, the judge disgustedly asked her what she was wearing (described as a professional outfit worn for court in NY without issues), she responds, "Armani." I love badass women.

What book/"scene" that made you admire a woman's sass and badassery? #strongwomen #dontsaveme

Andrea4 My God, so timely! Was just telling a friend that some dude told me he wished he could make everything all better for me and my gut reaction was "no! I dont need saving- I can make it better myself!" 8mo

"I‘ve got to figure out before I die whether I want to be happy or I want to be right" ...

How do you feel about this quote?

For me personally, (as quoted by SarcasmOnly) I'm at a stage in my life where I keep myself out of arguments. Even if you tell me 1+1=5, you're absolutely correct, enjoy!

#happiness or #alwaysright

Buechersuechtling Me too, I am in a phase of my life where I choose happiness. Because nowadays I feel you‘re so quickly pulled into (bitter, mean) “black-and-white” and/or “I-am-right-and-you-are-wrong”-arguments even though you just wanted to share your point of view. But you get a shitstorm in return. And, additionally, does being right and/or letting everyone know that I definitely know it all make me happy❓No, it doesn‘t. 8mo
JacqMac It seems that people can‘t disagree anymore without bringing hate into it. I prefer to just walk away, too. It‘s really not worth my sanity. I do think it‘s really sad that we can‘t share opinions without fearing being personally attacked. 8mo
ReadingOverSleeping I agree with both of you 100%. Today, it's difficult to have a healthy debate someone feeling attacked. And it's sad because that's how you learn another's perspective, it's how you learn to see the other side of things - but most aren't willing to listen. I call it preserving my peace. If it doesn't educate or bring you joy, let it go! 8mo

I love a crime thriller, I love some lawyer action and courtroom drama, and I love a good page turner. Karin Slaughter is a new author for me and this ticked all those boxes (Although it was also gruesome, traumatic and a bit of a tear jerker...) Occasionally I felt it was drifting into cliche but I‘m being picky. A solid 4 ⭐️
