Hard Choices
Hard Choices: Decision Making Under Unresolved Conflict | Isaac Levi
28 posts | 1 reading
It is a commonplace that in making decisions agents often have to juggle competing values, and that no choice will maximize satisfaction of them all. However, the prevailing account of these cases assumes that there is always a single ranking of the agent's values, and therefore no unresolvable conflict among them. Isaac Levi denies this assumption, arguing that agents often must choose without having balanced their different values and that to be rational, an act does not have to be optimal, only what Levi terms "admissible." This book explores the consequences of denying the assumption and develops a general approach to decision-making under unresolved conflict. Professor Levi argues not only against the "strict Bayesian" position, but also against all the recent attempts to develop alternative models to Bayesianism. The book, which continues from his earlier The Enterprise of Knowledge, is certain to make an original and controversial contribution to the debates over choice theory.

Such hard choices. Just got in two audiobook holds on my library app and can not decide which to listen to first. Which one would y‘all suggest?

I‘m finishing up We Need to Talk About Kevin today and will be starting Sherman Alexie‘s You Don‘t Have to Say You Love Me tomorrow... and I‘m thinking I will need something lighter in the audiobook department this week! These are the four I‘m deciding between... any recommendations (or anti-recommendations!)? Which would you pick?

Ruthiella I can see where you might want a lighter book in between those two books! I haven‘t read it but the Jenny Colgan title looks like it would be sweet and maybe a good antidote!😀 5y
Zelma The One and Only Ivan will still be emotional if not as dark and heavy as your current reads. I‘d reD one of the others (though Ivan is wonderful). 5y
BarbaraJean @Zelma Oh, that‘s good to know—thank you! @Ruthiella Bookshop on the Shore might just be the escape I need. 😊 5y

SamanthaMarie Have you read the other two Incorrigible books before that third one? I vote Incorrigible because I think they are such lovely and funny books. Maryrose Wood is a real winner in my heart!!! ♡ 5y
BarbaraJean @SamanthaMarie Yes! They‘re such fun!! And the audiobooks are perfect. 5y
SamanthaMarie @BarbaraJean I should do the audiobook version some time. I read through them so quickly when I first learned of them 😍 5y

Trying to decide which non fiction will be Bk3 for the #24in48 #readathon I‘m leaning towards Ruby Ridge, only because I was watching documentaries on pay tv & watched first a Waco which led to Oklahoma which brought me to a Ruby Ridge, and this author was one of the “experts” on there. He was very articulate, was a journalist that covered the siege & had the most amazing voice, I coulda listened to him for hours! Def think Ruby Ridge is next.

This was a really difficult choice for me! I‘m going to throw my hat in the ring for number 6, the thriller. I‘d love to win book number 6 because I‘ve been reading a lot of non-fiction lately, and I‘d love to switch things up. I‘d love to get into a new genre because I haven‘t read many thrillers before.

Urgh, deciding which books to take with me on holiday is the worst... How am I supposed to know what I'll be in the mood for? 🙄 #thestruggleisreal

Also, apparently in Germany publishers want to make their readers work - why else would the words on the spine be upside down? I can't believe I never noticed this until now... 😁

Ok - here is my stack that I am going to try and pack for my time in Alaska. I also have my Kindle and I‘ve made four stacks of books for my husband to send as I need them. Now...to see if these will all fit into one of the suitcases 🤔

emilyhaldi Wow!! What an exciting adventure! You should probably pack this one too, but don‘t let it scare you too much 😆 6y
LauraBrook Great stack! And if I remember correctly, there‘s a B&N and an indie bookstore (Title Wave, maybe?) in Anchorage, so between this stack, the stores, and what hubby sends, you should be good. Enjoy Alaska, it‘s beautiful! 6y

BarbaraJean Soooo difficult! I spent 10 months in South Africa and had the same dilemma. I remember wishing I could import print books into a Kindle like CDs into iTunes! I ended up supplementing what I packed via care packages and a couple friends who came to visit and brought books with them! Hope your packing goes well... you‘ll have to post your final picks! Ok friendos, I've made some preliminary selections for the first half of our #poetrychallenge. I'm going to try to do 2 poets a month because I can't chooooooose!! I'm sure things will shuffle around, but I'm pretty excited about these to start. #poetrychallenge2018

Petrichor74 Do you chose the poets for the challenge or do we chose our own? 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Petrichor74 You choose your own! There are so many good ones I couldn't choose them for you, plus this way we'll all be exposed to more poets via each other's posts! 3 people including myself have already posted their choices for the first 6 months (though I'll probably change my mind a million times). 6y
DivaDiane I‘m definitely going to take part in your #poetrychallenge! I had a bit of a slump in2017 and only read 3 collections and 2 Anthologies. Hopefully, this will keep me on track! 6y

1. Short stories! Verses make me cry.
2. I like mingling & also my me-time.
3. I think I read more thrillers coz they are 'louder'.
4-5. Both.
6. Neither :( World cup was fun when they let an octopus predict it (rip Paul).
7. Paperback! The better to hold & shelve.
8. Never seen snow. :/ Idk about sand. It's dry and coarse. It gets everywhere.
9. I prefer reading ladies so, romance.
