A stand-alone fantasy tale from Seanan McGuire's Alex-award winning Wayward Children series, which began in the Alex and Nebula Award-winning, Hugo and Locus finalist, Tiptree Honor List Every Heart a Doorway Beneath the Sugar Sky, the third book in McGuire's Wayward Children series, returns to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children in a standalone contemporary fantasy for fans of all ages. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the "real" world. When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini cant let Reality get in the way of her quest not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.) If she can't find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesnt have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests... A tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do. Warning: May contain nuts. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I had heard this is many readers least favorite of the series and I agree. The actual story is solid and has a nice ending. What fails here is the character work, in particular a new character Cora, who seems very awkwardly inserted to add commentary on fat phobia and body positivity. I admire the want to make a body positive character, however, come on, is the book with the world made out of sugar the place for this?⬇️

Nessavamusic Is it body positivity when it just makes you feel bad for the character? Every part in Cora‘s voice made me cringe. So, I still will continue the series but I don‘t recommend this one. 2⭐️ 7mo

Bk1 of my #20in4 #readathon is done! The 3rd book in the Wayward Children series, this one‘s a strange ride. It‘s a portal plus time bending journey through a few worlds looking for Sumi so she can be resurrected & save her future daughter & her world of Confection(which is totally made of sugar foods!)Not my fave of the series but still a good story. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #Pantone2023

Dare I say my favourite of the Wayward Children series so far? Maybe my sweet tooth means I'm biased! I loved the commentary on fatphobia, and getting to visit a Nonsense world, especially considering how dark the world featured in the second book was, and catching up with/getting to know better, characters from previous books. Most definitely continuing in the series!

Not the best so far, imo, but still a fun story. Hard and heavy on the YA topics of body image and gender identity and I hated the way the narrator made the girls sound. I'll stick with it but the library only has 1 book on audio? Haha, it's just random... but an appropriate amount of Nonsense, honestly! 😁🍭🍬

I really like this story & these characters but the narrator is either flat or making the characters sound really petulant.

Linsy This wasn't my favorite of the series, but I loved 1 & 2! 2y
IamIamIam @Linsy I totally agree!! I feel like when you have a longer series, there's always a couple that are clunkers. It's kind of meh for me... excited for the next one, though! I love the infinite possibilities of characters and doors! 2y

A bit more meandering than the previous two, so it loses a bit in the pacing; however, I loved meeting Cora so much that I will forgive pretty much anything.

Another good entry to the Wayward Children series. Most of the action takes place in the land of Confections. I like the books were the teenagers work together to help each other's quests better than the ones were there are only one or two of the Wayward Children. Current rankings: 1) Every Heart a Doorway, 2) Beneath the Sugar Sky, and 3) Down Among the Sticks and Bones.

I didn't fall in love with this 3rd book in the Wayward Children series quite as much as I did the first two, maybe because it was too sugary and not violent enough. 😂 I did like the new characters, revisitation of the old ones, and exploring other worlds. I look forward to the rest of the series.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two books which may be because I didn't enjoy the narrator as much. I found some of the voices a bit annoying which influenced my enjoyment of the story. This was a much fluffier story and didn't include some of the darker undertones of the prior books.

Still a pick though at ⭐⭐⭐

Another wonderful installment in this series! I loved that we got to explore the other worlds that we've been told about and experience them with past characters. Amazing world-building! We learned a lot more interesting backstory about everyone. Plus I'm a sucker for time line manipulation plots.

Third in McGuire's “Wayward Children“ series of novellas about a boarding school for children returned from portal-fantasy worlds. In this one, the daughter of a character killed in book 1 arrives at the school, demanding help to bring her mother back so that she (the daughter) can be born. I love that it doesn't make sense and that's fine because mother & daughter come from a nonsense world. Of McGuire's series, this is easily my favorite.

GondorGirl I love this series so very much! 3y

My favorite of the Wayward Children series so far. Quirky & whimsical with a touch of dark & a lot at stake. It's like The Wizard of Oz meets Greek mythology plus CandyLand. There was a little lag in pacing a couple of times, but it was quickly resolved. The characters are intriguing & diverse & I love all of the different ways that McGuire has come up with for them to find their own worlds & discover themselves. This whole series is a lot of fun.

This book was beautifully written. A great adventure. And an interesting new world explored. We finally get to see Confection in all its whimsical glory. We get to catch up on older characters that we missed. Honestly it was a great addition to this series.

I still enjoyed the adventuring aspects of the third wayward children book but some of McGuire's writing got especially clunky this time around. while I agree with the anti-fatshaming message surrounding Cora, it feels like the author is beating you over the head with the message instead of letting things run its course. a shame, since I think Cora's backstory regarding her door was interesting. so far, this is probably the weakest of the books.

The third book in the Wayward Children series is still a "pick" but it's my least favorite so far. The characters introduced in this one just didn't grab me as much. I also preferred the traditional horror of the Moors to the Nonsense drama of Confection.

SkeletonKey I was disappointed by this one also, the series has been really up and down for me! 3y
Soubhiville Agreed! It‘s my least favorite, but I did still like it, and I think it was time for us to see one of the nonsense worlds. 3y

This third in the Wayward Children series takes us to Sumi‘s world, the sugar-built Confection. Like many, I didn‘t fall in love with this world like I did the grim and gruesome world of the Moors, part of that may be taste but also because we don‘t have a POV kind of character who NEEDS Confection. I think if this book had more of Sumi‘s backstory, I‘d appreciate Confection more. I may not have loved the destination but I still enjoyed the quest!

Like most people, I didn‘t like this one as much as the previous two books in the series. Nothing massively wrong with it, just didn‘t hit the same way. Much more whimsical which can be nice in FUCK 2020, but also made it feel less substantial. The world of Confection was cute but the descriptions of candy got repetitive. Liked all of the characters but wanted more depth from them, tho it is just a novella. Still fun but not as memorable. 3/5 ⭐️

This was a cute story and really captures the authors explanation of nonsense, so far in the series we have explored worlds of logic and reason, so this story was a welcome change from all the rules and order. This story reads like an adult candy land.. it was cute and the narrator was excellent at ensuring every character.had a distinct voice and personally. Well done. A short read for a Friday.

While this was my least favorite of the first three Wayward Children books, it was still really enjoyable & a lot of fun. I loved the introduction of the new character, Cora. And I appreciated the opportunity to visit a nonsense world. Being obsessed with candy & sweets, I thought that candy land would be the world for me, but after reading this book, I'm not so sure.
