Overall I'm glad I read it. There is some controversy surrounding the author but I'll let you Google that for yourselves. Parts of it were excellent. I really liked how he incorporated history outside of the characters lives as well. This was originally sold as non-fiction but I think it would be historical fiction at best. Because even if the events were true you can never know a characters internal thoughts. I will be digesting this for a while.

Roots won the April pick of the month (how could it not?) but it lost out to Penguin Lessons, which made me laugh and cry and made me want a penguin. #readingbracket @chasjjlee

I loved this book so much! I know there are some doubts as to its' authenticity, but the story is still amazing.

Our vicious history of slavery & the toll it took on our country is handled so beautifully and delicately in this brilliant genealogical story of Alex Haley‘s roots. Where he could have dwelt on the worst of slavery, Haley focused on family life. It made it more real, to really feel with these characters what slavery was like. I especially appreciated the postscripts to this edition telling how Haley uncovered his roots and how he wrote this ⬇️

Slave Kunte Kinte has just been released from having all four limbs staked for five days in a shack at his new “home,” following an unsuccessful attempt to escape.

I‘m so impressed with the depth of the story of his life in Africa. Almost a full quarter of the book is devoted to it.

My newest audio book choice. I've been wanting to read this for years. Since I only listen in the car, and this is 30 hours, I anticipate this is going to be a long adventure. I'm already loving the writing and the narration though so it bodes well.

#OnThisDay in 1977, the tv adaptation of Alex Haley's epic tale Roots debuted, introducing new audiences to the saga of Kunta Kinte and his descendents. Roots would go on to win 9 Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody; the finale episode still stands as the 2nd most viewed finale in tv history (Name #1 - No googling!). Fitting that the man who encouraged us to "take a look, in a book" would find his break out role in an adaptation. #HistoryGetsLIT

This is the story of the author and his journey in tracing back his family history.
We meet Kunta Kinte in the 17th century somewhere along the Gambia River. He's just a boy, we follow him through his teen years, manhood training, we see him grow and mature throughout his rains until the day he steps into the forest to make a drum for his younger brother and is snatched by the toubob slave traders and from here to story begins.

Honoring Alex Haley on his birthday today. Pics are from his farm in Clinton, TN when my bookclub was meeting there in person. Looking forward to getting back sometime soon. The farm is the current home of the Langston Hughes Library and the Children's Defense Fund. The Clinton 12 were the first students to desegregate a state-sponsored school in the American South in 1956. So much history still to be recognized and taught.

I liked it. It‘s also very long. I think that it‘s hard to sustain “really good” in a book over 800+ pages! (And keep in mind, I‘m generally a tough rater, anyway.) I admire that this was a groundbreaking book at the time it was published, and it reached a wider audience with the tv mini-series. I only watched the movie as an adult (I was a kid when it would have originally aired on tv). Cont in comments...

Today‘s reading was particularly rough. Haley is a gifted writer and I‘m so glad that I got the gentle nudge to pick this one up...it is outstanding so far.

Even though April started on Thursday, I think it‘s a bit easier to check in with the #chunksterchallenge2021 on Mondays. I‘m working on an average of 15 pages a day...so I‘m through Chapter 16. The writing is so rich! @Amiable

So I got to choose the books for my daughter and she got to pick mine. Seriously, Roots? She picked anything on the shelf that looked like it had a lot of pages 😕 #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

All set to start the Q2 #chunksterchallenge2021 tomorrow with Roots. I‘m planning on reading 2 chapters a day, so I should finish by the end of May. Looking forward to buddy-reading this with @CoverToCoverGirl and @Kelly326 !

Interesting chronicle of one man's ancestors. I found the first part, about Kunta, the most interesting. I found I wasn't as keen as his family extended.
However, such a harrowing yet readable book. #blackhistorymonth

I saw Roots when I was a kid but definitely time to read the book. I love the movie Peyton Place but I‘ve never read the book or watched the series. Loved the series of The Crimson Petal but never read the book.

I read Roots when I was 13, and it left an indelible impression on my mind.Really glad I read this book before reading Gone with the wind.

This multi-generational family saga is the real deal. It starts in Africa with Kunta Kinte, detailing his early life, until he is stolen by slave traders and forcibly brought to Virginia in despicable conditions. His story and those of his descendants are then told. The final chapters read more like the most incredible author‘s note. It‘s tremendous. Do not be put off by its length. Plus, the reader, Avery Brooks, has the most incredible voice.
