Spool of Blue Thread | Anne Tyler
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE - NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PEOPLE AND USA TODAY - NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post - NPR - Chicago Tribune - St. Louis Post-Dispatch - The Telegraph - BookPage Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader's Circle for author chats and more. "It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon. . . . " This is how Abby Whitshank always describes the day she fell in love with Red in July 1959. The Whitshanks are one of those families that radiate an indefinable kind of specialness, but like all families, their stories reveal only part of the picture: Abby and Red and their four grown children have accumulated not only tender moments, laughter, and celebrations, but also jealousies, disappointments, and carefully guarded secrets. From Red's parents, newly arrived in Baltimore in the 1920s, to the grandchildren carrying the Whitshank legacy boisterously into the twenty-first century, here are four generations of lives unfolding in and around the sprawling, lovingly worn house that has always been their anchor. Praise for A Spool of Blue Thread "An act of literary enchantment . . . [Anne] Tyler remains among the best chroniclers of family life this country has ever produced."--The Washington Post"Quintessential Anne Tyler, as well as quintessential American comedy . . . [She] has a knack for turning sitcom situations into something far deeper and more moving."--The New York Times Book Review "By my count I've now reviewed around fifty books for USA Today. I've never given any of them four stars until today: to A Spool of Blue Thread, the masterful twentieth novel by Anne Tyler."--USA Today"By the end of this deeply beguiling novel, we come to know a reality entirely different from the one at the start."--O: The Oprah Magazine "Well-crafted, utterly absorbing and compelling . . . probably the best novel you will read all year."--Chicago Tribune "A miracle of sorts . . . tender, touching and funny . . . [an] understated masterpiece."--Associated Press"Exploring [the] dichotomy--the imperfections that reside within a polished exterior--is Tyler's specialty, and her latest generation-spanning work accomplishes just that, masterfully and monumentally."--Elle "The story of any family is told through the prism of time. And no storyteller compares to Tyler when it comes to unspooling those tales."--St. Louis Post-Dispatch "Vintage Anne Tyler . . . [The Whitshanks are] rendered with such immediacy and texture that they might be our next-door neighbors."--Los Angeles Times "The magic of Tyler's novels [is that] you imagine these characters carrying on, muddling through, enduring the necessary sorrows and quiet joys of their lives somewhere beyond the page."--The Seattle Times "The sort of novel that's hard to disentangle yourself from. Warm, charming and emotionally radiant, it surely must be counted as among Tyler's best."--The Miami Herald "Prose so polished it practically glows on the page."--Houston Chronicle

Sometimes it‘s really great just to feel like you‘re dropping in on a family and reading about their lives. No mystery to solve, no gigantic love triangle. Just a book about #3generations of a family. A really great read! #booked2023 #roll100

Rating: 3 ⭐⭐⭐
This was my first time reading a book by Anne Tyler so i wasnt sure what to expect even tho i went in with an open mind sadly i was disappointed from the beginning, The Characters were OK but not very enjoyable especially when the parents kept arguing with each other about their son, Denny. The Setting was OK but not very informative. Overall an OK Contemporary Fiction Novel but ive read alot better before!!

"It was a beautiful breezy yellow and green afternoon. . ." This is how Abby Whitshank always begins the story of how she fell in love with Red that day in July 1959. The Whitshanks are one of those families that radiate togetherness: an indefiable and enviable kind of specialness. But they are also like all families, and that the stories they tell themselves reveal only part of the picture.

So disappointed - a TBR that I was so excited to read, but it did nothing for me. It suffered from poor editing, too many characters, and lack of plot; resulting in my confusion and detachment.

Book 104

I love Anne Tyler's distinct, interesting characters and complex family relationships. A Spool of Blue Thread is about the Whitshanks, a family with four grown children, living in a home in Baltimore built by their ancestors. True to Tyler's typical writing, the story doesn't stick with a single generation and jumps to explore previous generations of the family. It is so well-written, but I was left unsatisfied; I wanted more! 4 🌟s

This is what I think of as a true to form Anne Tyler book. A huge novel encompassing many years in the life of a Baltimore family. As in all of her books, I feel like I know all of the characters and can see myself really disliking some - Junior specifically. Seems like there‘s a “Denny” in everyone‘s family. Someone who just doesn‘t fit into our norms of what is expected of an adult. Tyler helps us embrace these people . Loved it!

KCofKaysville I really liked it too. 4y

Well that was just what the doctor ordered. Another beautifully written family saga by Anne Tyler. I ended up locking myself in the bathroom to finish this tonight because my family, who I‘ve been holed up with for a while now 😬, wouldn‘t leave me alone! I mean there‘s no one I‘d rather be locked up with, but oh my goodness, I just wanted to be with this book today. 😆📖🤓💗😍👏🙏.

Oh, just finished this ever so beautiful book.

There were a few funny lines in this book, as always in Tyler's writing, but as I listened to most of it on audio I didn't bother writing any down. I'm seeing the importance of noting down quotes from a book as its doubtful you will easily come across them again. It's just that stopping reading to do this spoils the flow.

Here is a quote from the near end of the book that I thought was amusing.

First of all, I know I'm a bit slow on the mark, but Woo Hoo for Pic Collage!
Secondly, I've just unearthed quite a collection of my mums books, books she had on her shelf when I was a kid. I will have to post some of the awesome, vintage, 50's & 60's covers one day!
And thirdly, as I unearth my Mothers books onto my own shelf, the tagged book speaks of children having to sort thru & throw away parents belongings after passing...lessons for me???

Leftcoastzen So cool to see these. If I found them at a thrift store, I‘d be picking out some. (edited) 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Leftcoastzen Yes, I love them! I'm not sure if my mum read any of these, she's still with us, she's just not capable of remembering if she had read them or not. I hope I get the chance to read a few before my kids end up sending my book collection to the thrift store after I'm gone 😉 Fact of life huh? Confirmed for me again in the book I'm reading atm 5y
MrsMalaprop As you know I‘m a Tyler fan, but I‘ve yet to read this one. Now that I know what it‘s about I‘ll have to bump it up my #tbr. My dad had dementia & died a year ago & my mum is now diagnosed & in aged care. My sister & I cleared out their home & the thousands of books that lined the walls. I took some books, but so many went to the RSPCA & Save the Children. Hope others will get some pleasure from them. 5y

I started this yesterday on audiobook whilst doing some sorting and continuing it tonight laying in bed. I'm loving it, its focused on family and relationships and of course it's in Anne Tyler's beautiful style.

Thousand-Lives I have only read Clock Dance by Anne Tyler. Loved it and have been meaning to read more of her work. Will bump this one up on my list! Do you have any other recommendations of hers to try? 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Hi @Thousand-Lives ! I also read Patchwork Planet last year, my first Tyler, and I just loved it! I really love her style of writing, its like I'm home. I find it very relaxing and exciting all at the same time. I'm looking forward to reading a few others of hers this year also, The Accidental Tourist, An Amateur Marriage, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant and Breathing Lessons, all of which I have copies of on my shelf, found at op shops. 5y
Thousand-Lives @Curiouser_and_curiouser It sounds like we have very similar taste! I also have those on my waiting to be read stacks. 😁 Haven‘t heard of Patchwork Planet, but will check it out. Thank you! 5y

Curiouser_and_curiouser @Thousand-Lives omg!! I fell asleep listening to my audiobook and it expired at midnight with only 20 minutes to go! Lol, silly me. I have to reserve it now and wait 2 weeks to hear the rest! 5y

Curiouser_and_curiouser @Thousand-Lives I've just sourced the ebook and downloaded it, I'll read it now, phew! My first Anne Tyler book. I didn‘t LOVE reading it. I found the story and characters well developed and entertaining. The family dynamics reminded me a lot of my own family but I have to admit, it was a tough read as I watch my parents getting old and their health not what it used to be. Plus, my mom has attachments issues to their house and she‘s terrified of selling it though they know they really need to. I guess this one hit close to home.

Samplergal Loved it. You have to like character studies to love Anne Tyler. She‘s a master at it. (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB I liked it a lot! 5y
DGRachel @Samplergal That‘s part of the problem...they are very hit or miss types of books for me and I haven‘t been able to determine what makes a “good” one for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Samplergal I know I love character studies and quirky people who are very flawed. I love Anne Tyler as a result. She makes Baltimore a quirky setting ( because it‘s very quirky) and her characters are mostly people you watch on any sidewalk. I feel like this is one of her better books. And know that may be the story. I HATE fantasy so I stay away. I don‘t need flashy ending. Her books for me are soft pillows. Makes you feel. (edited) 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Samplergal I love the way you describe Anne Tyler's books, I feel the same way! I don't need a flashy ending either and reading them makes me feel like I'm home, or like you said, like soft pillows. Perfect description and its exactly how I felt reading all 3 books by Tyler. 5y

Knowing this was Anne Tyler‘s last book, I have started this book many times and put it back. Baltimore culture features in each of her books, which is likely why I love her books so much. Penn Station in Bmore is in the background here, where it‘s mentioned often in this book. A tale of families, in the “Balmer” tradition, with its ebbs and flow, make this a solid five star book.

It‘s funny as I usually dislike books where there are no answers or conclusions. This book just drifts along and we don‘t get to find out the ‘whys‘ - why someone did what they did, or why someone behaves like they do, but I still enjoyed it all the same...

Book about family! Includes several generations of stories, cuz we all have a story that makes us special, unique and different. Classic family, in that we think we know our family, but there is so much more to each person‘s story that we don‘t know or understand. We affect each other so much more than we realize.

Anne Tyler‘s books always seem to hover between just okay and 👍 for me. It‘s a solid family saga, but I did not like the brief but jarring flashback to the past 2/3 of the way through the story.

I think what keeps pulling me back to her books is the taste of home they give me. Her settings always feel so familiar!

#booked2018 #mcover70 #mountTBR

This happens very rarely, that I‘m enjoying a book, but get to a new section and think, this is a good end to the story! I‘m not sure I want to read further! 😳

I‘m not particularly interested in jumping back to the past, which is what Part Two holds. Anne Tyler makes me feel like I am eavesdropping on someone else‘s family drama, which can be fun, but there is very little plot to move me forward from here.

MayJasper Yes I often find that device annoying. I don't want to know what happened x number of years ago, I want to know what happens next. 6y
BarbaraBB I agree. I just read this book and felt perfectly fine without diving into the past! 6y
alisiakae @MayJasper In some books, I like the back and forth. But not this one! @BarbaraBB I‘m almost finished now, but definitely still feel this way, I don‘t think it was necessary, and for me, it took away from the story rather than enhanced it. 6y

Four generations of a middle-class American family, living in the suburbs of Baltimore. Nothing much happens to them, they live and love and lie and make mistakes. Cinfhen I bailed on this because at the 70 page mark nothing was happening and I sort of saw where it was heading. Glad u liked it and great choice for this prompt!!! 6y
TheCuriousHousecat I loved this book. The author has a fine perception and details family nuances with ease. 6y
alisiakae Ooohhh....I still need to pick something for this prompt, and I own this one! I like Anne Tyler‘s books. 6y

Not much of a page turner but quite well written and apt for readers who like cross generation and family dramas.

Not going to lie...I'm having a pretty hard time getting into this book. I'm on page 100 and I feel so disconnected from the multitude of characters that have been introduced. Had I known it was a family saga, I honestly may not have picked it up. I had the same trouble relating to The Nest. I'll give it a few more chapters, but I just might not be the right audience for this book.

Caroline2 Yeah I bailed on this book! I just couldn‘t get interested in any of the characters! 🙁 6y
rmaclean4 I love Anne Tyler...but had to bail on this one. 6y
JennyM I second all the above - ❤️ Anne Tyler, but not this book 6y

Bookgirl I felt the same, stuck it out, and ended up liking it to my surprise 6y
thea-block I agree with everything you mentioned above! I was surprised at how hard it was to get into this book. In the end I appreciated the atmospheric perspective from the book but I never loved the characters. No spoilers, but I think that‘s part of the point of the book - people are not wholly love-able, and we all make choices that affect the future in sometimes drastic ways! 6y
Rachel.Rencher @thea-block Yeah, I definitely understand that the characters aren't meant to be lovable. There's been plenty of books where the main character sucks but I still like the story. Maybe I need to give it another try later on, but I don't think the characters were even that developed. She just kept telling reminiscent stories that I thought were going to lead up to something, and then nothing happened. I'm still open to try her other books, though! 6y
Lucas.Rencher Well maybe put it down and come back to it later 😀 6y

Started this book last night! I'm about 20 pages in, and I love her writing style so far. I have no idea or context of what this story is about, so I'm excited to see how it progresses!

Chelsea.Poole I dearly love this book ♥️📘 6y

Pickpick

I went into this with reservations. Family sagas are not always my thing. But I was pleasantly surprised at how invested I was with the family, and how amusing their antics were

Not one of my favorites by Anne Tyler, but honestly I feel like if I read it again in about 10 to 15 years I‘ll feel very differently about it
