Carpe Jugulum (Revised)
Carpe Jugulum (Revised) | Terry Pratchett
Mightily Oats has not picked a good time to be a priest. He thought he'd come to the mountain kingdom of Lancre for a simple little religious ceremony. Now he's caught up in a war between vampires and witches, and he's not sure there is a right side.

I had a much better time reading Weatherwax in this book, I feel like it gave a more personal journey for her character. There's something incredibly human in the fact that even as they work to defeat a greater threat/evil, there's a bit of judginess and pettiness from both witches and priest, but it doesn't stop them from helping each other, and maybe come out more understanding in the end. Love Igor and Scraps; Death cameos.
Warning: fatphobia.

Another book finished for #Scarathlon2022 that fits the #TeamMonsterMash theme! The witches, my favourite Discworld characters, goes up against a family of vampires. The cover image sums up pretty well this chaotic and hilarious encounter.

I actually read this a couple weeks ago and forgot to review. Oops! The Witches stories are always my favorite of the Discworld universe and this one didn't disappoint. A few really good passages, some witty humor, and an interesting story that actually didn't have an obvious ending. If you're a Discworld fan, don't miss this entry in the series.

khooliha I had forgotten so much of this book! I really enjoyed the stuff with Mightily Oats, and I wouldn't anticipated how well he works in this novel. 4y

khooliha It is odd to see two character lines ending back to back (with this and Last Continent). I think both work well as saying goodbye, though I do wish Agnes had had more to do since, as far as I remember, we don't see her again. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha I agree, we just really started getting the pictsies here, with only the brief appearance of Wee Mad Arther before, I want to skip ahead to Wee Free Men now! More pictsies and witches! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha I would have liked more Agnes too. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just recently listened to The Wee Free Men and MAN what a good book! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really liked this one, not really a surprise since I tend to prefer the witches and guard. I liked the spin on the fairy godmother naming, and the “modernized” vampire, it all just worked well for me. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha I loved Tiffany‘s books! I‘m looking forward to visiting them again. 4y
Read-y_Picker @Riveted_Reader_Melissa omg that naming part was so funny I laughed out loud! 4y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha My favorite part is the Dontgonearthe Castle. “Last chance to not go near the castle” lol. I also loved Igor. 4y

When the King diplomatically invites all the neighbors in for the new baby‘s naming ceremony, including a family of vampires, trouble naturally ensures...after all you can‘t expect a vampire to forgo an invitation, printed on fancy paper with gold edging no less. Luckily the ramtops have a few residence witches to come to the rescue, using their wiles, some headology, and a smattering of pictsies.

Through the shredded black clouds a fire moved like a dying star, falling back to earth —
— the earth, that is, of the Discworld —
— but unlike any star had ever done before, it sometimes managed to steer its fall, sometimes rising, sometimes twisting, but inevitably heading down.

Pretty sure this is my favorite witch book! (Ask again when we get through the Tiffany books.) I think all of this weaves together beautifully. I'm shocked at how much I forgot, because I love so much of it! I think my biggest complaint is the amount of stuff Agnes got to do - I wish it had been more.

Time to lay out my Theory of Witches Books:
So the witch books always have bangers of endings, but I often don't feel as strongly about the rest of the book. I think these things go together! The witches, especially Granny, are very powerful, which means a lot of the plotting has to be keeping them from getting to the problem. Lords and Ladies felt pretty contrived, but in this book that plot delay mostly felt very character based.
#OokBOokClub

khooliha I think Carpe Jugulum works best of all the witch books in this respect (Maskarade is an outlier and should not be counted). 4y
khooliha Also, I think the most metaphorical layering shows up in the witch books, amd I think how important magic is in them lets that happen. 4y

Okay, there are way more things in this book that I don't remember at all than there are things I do, so far. (Also, I am interested to revisit The Sea and Little Fishes in the light of Nanny saying Granny could never hurt a child. What changes from now to then?)

I don't know why it took me so long to read this one...I believe Sir TP's books are all special, full of laughs and sass and wisdom. This one definitely is up there with the more specialy-iest. Not only is it an introduction to the Wee Free Men and their ludicrous insanity, it's a reflection on faith, folk lore, knowing your own mind, and how do we make choices that are right and wrong. Plus vampires. And Igor. Yeth, mathter....

Of course I loved Carpe Jugulum! We get to know all of the witches a little better and in slightly different roles. There‘s a preacher man who‘s faith is challenged. And some very unusual vampires. Oh, and an Igor who is something of a Frankenstein monster, of his own making. All the ❤️.

I found this beautiful 1998 HB Of Carpe Jugulum at the charity store for Q9 yesterday. I already own this one in the collectors library but I couldn‘t NOT buy it so I grabbed it for my baby‘s daddy. He‘s yet to read Pratchett which is practically sacrilege. It‘s like new which is marvellous and I can‘t stop staring. #terrypratchett #sirterrypratchett #pterry #pratchetttheduckout #discworld #speakhisname #fantasy #secondhandfinds

Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB Oh no! 😳😂 I do so recommend him x 7y
TrishB Every time I think about it I dither and don‘t know where to start! 7y
See All 7 Comments
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB My recommendation would be - wherever! Pratchett wrote the discworld books so that they would be inter-readable no matter where you start and they‘ll all connect via inner storylines within storylines and characters. Or The Colour Of Magic is the first book. But I do so recommend starting elsewhere. My first ever one was Equal Rites. X 7y
TrishB I like to start things in order - I think this is half my problem really when I ask people and they say anywhere! Then I just put it off again! 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB Ahh! That‘s understandable. Well, The Colour Of Magic is Book one, followed by The Light Fantastic. 😊 7y
TrishB I think they may be hiding in the non ordered tbr 😁👍🏻 7y
