When God Was a Rabbit
When God Was a Rabbit: A Novel | Sarah Winman
This is a book about a brother and a sister. It's a book about secrets and starting over, friendship and family, triumph and tragedy, and everything in between. More than anything, it's a book about love in all its forms. In a remarkably honest and confident voice, Sarah Winman has written the story of a memorable young heroine, Elly, and her loss of innocence-a magical portrait of growing up and the pull and power of family ties. From Essex and Cornwall to the streets of New York, from 1968 to the events of 9/11, When God Was a Rabbit follows the evolving bond of love and secrets between Elly and her brother Joe, and her increasing concern for an unusual best friend, Jenny Penny, who has secrets of her own. With its wit and humor, engaging characters whose eccentricities are adroitly and sometimes darkly drawn, and its themes of memory and identity, When God Was a Rabbit is a love letter to true friendship and fraternal love.Funny, utterly compelling, fully of sparkle, and poignant, too, When God Was a Rabbit heralds the start of a remarkable new literary career.

Another thoroughly delightful read. It‘s the kind of story I really enjoy - a story about family and community and imperfect people trying to do their best. Gentle and heartwarming in the best of ways. A definite pick.

Superb, as expected. I think I've read all of hers now, which equally thrills and saddens me!!
I liked how she used the sibling relationship to demonstrate their lives and external relationships.

What an enjoyable read! And so glad to read this debut novel after reading Tin Man and Still Life. Her passion for food and landscape, her concern with family in the broadest sense and the intergenerational interplay are all there. And a talking animal! I particularly enjoyed the childhood part of the book that at times made me laugh out loud.

What a little gem 💎❤️😭. So much packed into this debut novel by Sarah Winman. Reminiscent of Kate Atkinson.

#currentlyreading This one‘s been on my #tbr shelves for sometime. I have high hopes. 🤞
Reading spot: Fremantle, Western Australia.

Anna40 Awww! I loved Fremantle. I used to ride my bike all the way from Scarborough to Fremantle 😊I remember a fantastic didgeridoo concert in a small music store and how artsy it was oh! and the brewery right by the water, forgot its name 3y
MrsMalaprop @Anna40 That‘s right. I remember you lived here. Little Creatiures 🍺. I used to work in Scarborough & ride between Sorrento & Scarbs. Have done the ride all the way from Sorrento, to Scarbs to Freo & back. So much sun & sea! ☀️🌊 3y

Deep family bonds and strong friendships are depicted with humor, sarcasm and melancholy, with a focus on the special relationship between a brother and a sister and the sister and her best friend, who all share the secret of dark childhood trauma. As adults, a new trauma helps them mend their broken souls and sets them free. The second part of the novel seemed to add gravity to sadness and switched the narrative tone from child to adult.

Ok, post #3 on the Epic book haul I took home from my lovely local opshop last week, almost as soon as it reopened!
So many of them were looking brand new and unread.
I'm so excited about all of them
I hunted for Pillars of the Earth but only found 2 others by Ken Follett.
Bridge of Clay
Nelson Mandela
Belly Dancing for Beginners (Aust)
The Girl with all the Gifts
The Time We Have Taken (Melbourne, Aust 1970)
Possession
The Peppermint Pig (Jnr)

This book made me both laugh out loud and cry. Sarah Winman has become a must read author for me. She writes beautifully atmospheric settings but also characters you fall in love with. This was her first novel, & while it has a few flaws imo (almost too many ups & downs for its size), I could easily read it again because I‘ve fallen in love with the brother and sister, whose bond founds the story. Amazing side characters too and LGBTQ represent 🙌

Centique I can‘t believe how good her eye for comedy is in the first chapters about the children‘s schooling - I hope to see some more of that in her future novels. 4y

Centique @TrishB yes! I‘m so glad you do too. I think this is one of those books where I love the flaws. They kind of make it a little messy and human. The more I think about it the more I love this one 😍 4y

Told in two parts, one childhood and one as adults, there is so much in here from events to every emotion. What it really boils down to is family and friendship, the bonds, the losses, the loyalty. I didn‘t alway think the book should work as well as it does and it certainly falters in parts but overall I loved it. Did not intend to use this for the #makesyoulol #booked2020 prompt but the nativity play scene made me startle myself with laughter.

I‘m hoping that I‘ll finish up all my challenges this month...
Top 4 are my last prompts needed for #pop19 - a favorite reread, based on a classic, ‘sugar‘ in the title and a ghost story.
My current read is Brideshead revisited, my last prompt for #booked2019 for public domain.
And I‘m at 90/100 for my goodreads goal.

Erotic Stories and One Day in December are for upcoming book clubs...

The Ocean Vuong is just calling my name😊💕📚

Oh, my poor heart 💔 Winman really knows how to write an emotional book, and her debut is no exception. A story about starting over, trauma, memories, love and family. A story with darkness, with beautiful writing, and with a lot to discuss.

I loved Tin Man so much that I have been postponing reading another book by Winman, afraid to be disappointed.
And I am, a bit, now. This was clearly a debut: it is a story about a family, their friends and all that happens to them in a lifetime. Love, magic, homosexuality, abuse, 9/11, coming of age... it‘s all there. Winman writes wonderful but she was still searching, I think.

... Odd, but I think I liked it. I just read this in one long sitting while home sick today. The book was split into 2 sections, one about the childhood of Elly and her brother Joe, and the other about their adulthood. Parts were surreal and parts were about the mundane moments that define a person‘s character and life. An interesting circularity to the story, if that makes sense. Winman makes use of both clarity and ambiguity in her storytelling.

A coming-of-age story set in Essex and Cornwall. Elly tells of her childhood with her brother Joe, & their eccentric parents, in a series of scenes and vignettes. I liked this but it was a little too sentimental for me. There is a background story with old neighbour Mr Golan but on this theme (& the sibling relationship) I preferred Anne Enright's The Gathering - a high bar, I admit! But I liked the warmth, humour & characters. Pic: David Bromley

KarenUK One of my favorites 💕 7y
Abailliekaras @KarenUK I'm looking forward to Tin Man next, coming out soon I think (in Australia). 😊 7y

I KNEW I had a copy somewhere....can now return borrowed copy mid read. Spot the difference - why the minor change, and same publisher!!? Mine is the one on top.... Maybe I bought it near Christmas....
