Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland
Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland | Jim DeFede
The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway's Smash Hit Musical Come from AwayWhen 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news.Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. This book recounts the inspiring story of the residents of Gander, Canada, whose acts of kindness have touched the lives of thousands of people and been an example of humanity and goodwill.

Granted I was in 8th grade when the tragedy of September 11, 2001 happened and was sheltered from much of the news but I had never heard of Gander, Newfoundland in any other historical context even as an adult let alone the hospitality the community shared with so many when American Air Space was shut down grounding flights for days.

The book the musical Come From Away is based on, read by a strong narrator. It is full of hope and goodness, although the Newfie‘s were both better and worse than in the musical, the passengers and crew also. Some changes made sense - you can‘t have a cast of 10k spread over multiple towns - and others less so. But a story that needs to be told in as many formats as it takes to get the message out there. Be kind. Help each other. Love.

CoverToCoverGirl So proud of my Atlantic Canadian neighbours. What they did was amazing. Newfie‘s are the kindest, funniest and friendliest people. (edited) 1mo

If you need a good cry, give this book a listen. Highlighting the events of 9/11 and the days following for the passengers of the 38 flights that were redirected and stranded in Newfoundland, this true story exemplifies the goodness, kindness, and hope in humanity.
I already knew a lot of this story from the musical 'Come From Away' but it was nice to see an even bigger picture of the many experiences the passengers and Gander residents had

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was a delight. Such a sweet story of people coming together and doing whatever they could and was needed at at time of so much chaos, violence, and uncertainty. I saw people posting about it a few months ago around the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and I eventually picked it up in an Audible sale. So glad I did. Definitely recommend.

After 9/11 the American Air Space was shut down, but when happened to all the planes still in the air? They were sent to many countries, but Newfoundland, in particular, saw its population double almost overnight. A great read full of interesting Newfoundland facts. Since I had already watched Come From Away (multiple times), I was familiar with many of the characters already. It was nice learning about their experiences that weren‘t⬇️

I have no words.
This book is the amazing, heartwarming, and heartbreaking story of 9/11/2001 and all the planes forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada when American airspace closed.
There was no question in the Newfies‘ minds that they would rally anything and everything they could to help the plane people, adopting over 6,000 passengers from all over the world for nearly a week.
I laughed and I cried. Have tissues handy.

Like anyone old enough, I have strong memories from 9/11/01, where I was, how scared I felt. One of my best friends was living in NYC and I was frantic to know she was safe. (Thankfully she was, and every 9/11 since she takes cookies to her local fire house).

That day and the days after showed us the worst and very best of humanity. Sending love to everyone on this day that‘s still so hard even 20 years later.

MatchlessMarie I had no idea they filmed the musical. This was the last show I saw before the covid shutdowns 💛💙 3y

Heartwarming and inspiring, although maybe with a few too many comments about how “astonishing”Americans find Newfoundland hospitality. I‘ve heard some of the stories in the musical “Come from Away,” but not the ones about what was happening in the airplanes as the crisis emerged, which was interesting. So many types of support and kindness shown to so many people (and animals!)

I can tell that the author isn't from New York, because Downtown Brooklyn is actually the name of the neighborhood, which means that "downtown" should be capitalized. This isn't as bad as calling 6th Avenue "The Avenue of the Americas," or pronouncing Houston Street like it's the city in Texas, but I can't exactly ignore this either. #NewYorkerOCD

Audible, I did enjoy this program.

I‘m not one of those people who believes all our problems can be solved by kindness. We need deep structural change on a number of levels.

That said, the people of Newfoundland showed that kindness can mean the world and bring out the best in all involved.

I loved this feel good book about the kindness shown by Newfies to the hundreds of passengers stranded on 9/11/01 and the days after. #audiobook
