A title that captures the last six months of my life would be Things Fall Apart. Watching my mother‘s rapid decline from Alzheimer‘s ending with her death Thursday has been agonizing, and trying to support my dad through it is equally so. Next week I will find out whether I will have a job next year or not (I‘m a school librarian in Texas, where the governor is holding our school funding hostage for his voucher program) so there‘s that . . . 😫

Mehso-so

This is a sweeping historical romance with all the sights and sounds of an exotic India and it appears to be a treasured favourite of many readers. Honestly I found it dragged terribly and was very dated, to the point where I became impatient with it. 🕌

1. I haven‘t really cried over a book in years—this was one I cried over in my teens. These days I feel moved, and the book stays with me, but I don‘t cry. Maybe I‘m dead inside! 🤷‍♀️😂
2. Favorite genre is classic lit. I love the timelessness of the stories, and the exquisite writing that is to be found in these books that have remained at the forefront of literature for decades, even centuries.
3. Impossible to choose!! 😱

Eggs Thank you for your thoughtful responses 🤗📚🙏🏻 2y
Alfoster So agree! I wept over this one too!😱 2y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Alfoster I love all of her epics about India—she‘s an amazing writer! ❤️ 2y
Vansa Love this book.Incredibly nuanced representation of India,no exoticisation, memorable characters.here's a little factoid-this was the first miniseries ever made by a then little known HBO. 2y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @vansa I agree! I‘ve actually never watched the miniseries. The book is SO engrossing and her writing creates such vivid pictures in your mind that I was afraid that a film would taint them. When I finished that book for the first time, I felt almost dazed, like I was waking up from a deep sleep—so thoroughly had I been immersed in that world! ❤️ 2y

1. We used to always go apple 🍎 picking with the extended family.
2 I read The Far Pavillions in my very early 20s and it made a huge impact on me, both good and bad. I still reread it on a regular basis

I think the tagged book is the first book I read that had anything to do with India. I loved these books. I have read many books by Indian authors and have many more on my TBR. I have tried a little Indian food and would love to try more. Suggestions?

Happy Independence Day, India!

BiblioLitten You could give Indian sweets a try... Rasmalai, gulaab jamun, kaju katli. 4y
Deblovestoread @BiblioLitten You can‘t ever go wrong with sweets! Thank you 4y
Blackink_WhitePaper Thanks for playing 😍💐 yes you can try sweets like Gulaab jamun and carrot halwa... you can try ‘Dosa‘, unlike other Indian foods it will not be very spicy.. 4y

#7Days7Books Day 6

We present here 7 books that will remain in our minds, because they touched us so much, changed us.
I read this book as a teenager and was enthralled. Never before or since have I been so completely swept up in a battle scene (they‘re not my thing). When I finished the last page, I felt like I was emerging from a trance, so completely had I been submerged in the world of the characters.

Care to join in, @Melancholy2243 ?

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have the same memories of this book! 4y
Melancholy2243 Would love to❤️❤️ 4y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @BarbaraTheBibliophage I don‘t know if I‘m just missing them, but is anyone still writing those epics, big thick books full of adventure and romance anymore? In addition to M. M. Kaye‘s books, I so love Lonesome Dove, Shogun, and Susan Howatch‘s The Rich are Different and her others. I‘ve read Follett and while he‘s engaging, I don‘t get that “grand saga” feel from them. Maybe it‘s just me! 😁 4y
See All 9 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CindyMyLifeIsLit I think it‘s my reading patterns, but those epics exist in the fantasy world still. But not so much historical fiction. Here‘s a trilogy you didn‘t mention that I loved and has an epic feel. 4y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @BarbaraTheBibliophage I will have to check that out! Thanks for the tip! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage So, I was chatting with Mr. B about epic historical fiction. We thought of James Michener and also Herman Wouk. I prefer the latter, he the former. Both write giant tomes! 4y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve heard great things about Herman Wouk and he‘s been on my tbr forever! Guess I need to move him up the list. 😁 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CindyMyLifeIsLit Keep me posted whenever you decide to pick it up! 😃 4y

1. Ash or Anjuli from The Far Pavilions, which was the first truly epic book I ever read. Now I want to reread or possibly listen to this one again!
2. Worst. Memory. Ever. But “you can‘t handle the truth” comes to mind. (From Jack Nicholson‘s epic speech from A Few Good Men)
3. My littlest granddaughter
4. I‘m so late ... so I don‘t know ... maybe YOU!!

#TuesdayTidbits @JenlovesJT47

Jabberwocky Ooooooooooh Anjuli 100%! Sort of... 😅 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jabberwocky I know, right? That‘s part of leaving the option to be Ash instead. 6y
TheLibrarian I have a terrible memory too. It amazes me when people can remember quotes from books and movies. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @TheLibrarian 🙌🏻 We‘re just not those people! My grandmother was an actress and drama teacher. I grew up with her quoting all kinds of stuff. I didn‘t get those genetics! (edited) 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit The Far Pavilions is one of my ultimate favorite books!! I wanted to name my son Ashton after Ash, but it didn‘t sound good with our last name so I named him after Alex from Shadow of the Moon instead. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CindyMyLifeIsLit I actually read your lovely TFP review tonight! And I probably should have “liked” it because I did. 💛💙❤️ 6y

LauraBrook @Tamra Hah, you‘re hilarious! 😂 7y
LauraBrook @quirkyreader my thoughts exactly! 7y
LauraBrook @BethM Right? I‘m assuming it was from an older persons estate and no one flipped through books before selling them. There were a lot at the sale from Texas, which I know is where Half Price is based. Was still shocking to find! And, for all of us bookworms, a good reminder to check through any and all books before they leave your house or an older relatives‘ house! 7y
LauraBrook @rabbitprincess that‘s one of my jobs tomorrow! Lord I hope it‘s real! 7y

LauraBrook @OrangeMooseReads I know! 😱😳👍🏼 7y
LauraBrook @drokka Hah! 😂😂😂 7y
LauraBrook @Readerann You‘re right, it does pay (sometimes literally) to be kind to old books. How was the miniseries? (If you remember, of course!) I think I started watching the first show, saw it was based on a book, and stopped right away. 7y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen $30 is nothing to sneeze at! Heck, any found money is nice. 7y
Readerann @LauraBrook The mini-series was very good, although the casting was a bit odd, with Amy Irving as the Indian princess! 7y

I'm loving this portrait of mid 17th century India. Populated by scheming palace women, Rajahs, English Sahib-log and a community of palace serving people, this novel is leaping off the page for me. It's slow going because I rarely have more than three minutes to run together, but my new bookmark got here today and I couldn't wait to show it off! 🐳

For the past 5 years, I've chosen a chunky, door stopper to read during the summer. I have been trying to decide what to read this summer and finally settled on this one, my chunkiest endeavor ever (1,191 pgs)! This copy was published my birth year (1984) and has such high ratings so I'm going to go for it! #SummerReading #20booksofsummer #CurrentlyReading #dogsoflitsy #dottie

EvieBee @LauraBrook Thank you for the support, Laura! Last year it was Anna Karenina and the year before Middlemarch. Gone with the Wind was the first. I feel like it gives me license to take ALL summer to finish if need be. 😁 (edited) 7y

Three women authors (#WWW) who influenced my reading life. If it weren't for The Far Pavilions, I wouldn't love giant epic books so much. If it weren't for The Vampire Chronicles, I'd never read so much horror and fantasy. #setinasia #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge I read this 30-something years ago in high school and I still remember how much I enjoyed it. But that's about all I remember. It is a massive tome which keeps me from rereading it. I'm a far slower reader now than I was then so I'd probably have to invest a year to get through it. 🙁

susanw Me too! High school, 30 years ago. Loved it. It's still sitting on my shelf. I wonder if I read it now if it would be as good? I'm not interested in finding out. I'll just look at it there and keep the good feelings it gives. 8y

Another great read from my teenage years. Not a young adult novel. I've always just devoured books.

Miznanner I loved it! I devoured books as well, visiting the library weekly. Another favorite was The Forsyth Saga by John Galsworthy 8y
Jilly A fabulous book, set in India before during and after the Mutiny. Multi layered, a love story too. Have re-read it once or twice, invokes the heat and exotic Indian sub continent. Brilliant. 8y
