Hard to find words to describe this book just know how it makes me feel —-Wow. Took me a while to source a copy but so glad I did. Thank you @MrsMalaprop for your review which prompted me to look for it.
. As I tend to forget books I read, I‘m going to keep this one with a note on it that tells me to read it again when I think I can‘t remember it.😊.

‘Wow‘ seems vastly inadequate to describe this novel, but I guess that‘s why I‘m a reader not a writer 😆. I don‘t even know how I came to have this book on my radar, but I‘m so glad. I can‘t say much about it without spoiling it for those who‘ve yet to have the pleasure. I wish I‘d slowed down a bit at the beginning to appreciate the setting of the scene and descriptions of Bill‘s art. Complex. Beautifully written. Magnificent 😍👏🙏

Leftcoastzen It is among the best books I‘ve ever read . Glad you liked it! 4mo

What I Loved: A Novel | Siri Hustvedt

The recollections of an older man are different from those of a young man. What seemed vital at forty may lose its significance at seventy. We manufacture stories, after all, from the fleeting sensory material that bombards us at every instant, a fragmented series of pictures, conversations, doors, and the touch of things and people. We delete most of it to live with some semblance of order, and the reshuffling of memory goes on until we die.

BarbaraBB This book 🩷🩷🩷 8mo
Leniverse @BarbaraBB It will for sure be on my 2024 favourites list. I wasn't ready for the shock of Part 2 😢 This book hits hard! 8mo

What I loved about this? Nearly everything! While the plot in parts 1 & 2 was a bit predictable, the details about Bill‘s art were incredible. I truly felt I could see it and his evolution as an artist.

The book spans 25 years and is told by an early collector, who becomes best friends with Bill. Their wives have children at the same time, but the families‘ fates turn out very different. A complex look at long-term friendship and marriage.

Megabooks @BarbaraBB thank you so much for this wonderful gift! 😘😘 @squirrelbrain @youneverarrived I ended up loving this, too, as you both predicted! 2y

My rdg grp in Feb is discussing this + her hubby's novel book of illusions. It is a remarkable piece of writing about art , friendship, parenting, marriage and grief. Two NY couples in the 80s, live + love art. Children and Divorce changes the dynamics of the friendship which is explored with precise prose. The picture of grief is profoundly moving. The 2nd half changes tone into an almost noirish mystery. Interesting bk that I'm still digesting.

Cathythoughts Great review Andrew 👍 I have this on my shelf .... soon 🤞 3y

I always struggle to review books that really resonate with me (even if I don‘t relate to the characters or their lives.) I just felt this one; the characters emotions, their relationships with each other etc, I was involved. It goes to a really sad place - I was not expecting it to go where it did. There‘s a lot of themes running though it like mental illness & art. A page turner but with a lot of depth to it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie Very nice review. 4y
andrew61 Great review, I read it years ago for our reading group and remember little other than the miniature art? and it suddenly changing from one kind of bk to a bit of of a mystery. I think it deserves a reread. 4y

While I like lyrical prose, I have zero patience for overwrought pretentious paragraphs (and this book is loaded with painstakingly endless pages of indulgent tangents). I realize this book was published in 2003 but for me it feels VERY dated. I‘ve read stories like this before, so this book felt recycled and stale. I know lots of my Litsy friends really loved this one so I‘m sure this is more my frustration and personal disappointment.

BarbaraBB Ah I am sorry to hear that! On to the next! 💕 5y
Suet624 Awww, bummer. I liked the book but I completely understand your issues with it. 5y
Cinfhen Did you like this one too @Suet624 we‘re usually in sync 👯‍♀️#BookTwin and I‘m generally on point with @BarbaraBB too! Wow, I was really off on this one 5y
Suet624 I think I took it really easy with it. I seem to remember wrestling with the pace and excessiveness at first and then made myself slow down and take it in. That helped me with it. It was the writing that I thoroughly enjoyed and the story was secondary to me. And yes, you and me, baby. Book twins. (edited) 5y
Kalalalatja That‘s too bad. I had two friends who really liked it, and their enthusiasm definitely made me enjoy it more, as I noticed all the positive stuff more, because of it. But I get your points about 5y

Weird to see my hubby‘s initials on the page of my current book. Even though I‘ve known the character‘s name, I never stopped to consider his initials. With less than 100 pages to go, I‘m still no fan of this book. If it wasn‘t for IRL bookclub I would have bailed by now.

Cathythoughts Sounds like this ones not for you .... We had IRL Bookclub last night , The Dutch House ( my pick ) & it scored very high ! Thank god ! 5y
emilyhaldi LOL, I loved this book!!!!! So its only natural that you wouldn't 😉🙃 5y

TrishB @Cathythoughts that‘s a relief 😁 5y
JackOBotts @TrishB my book club‘s “rule” is that you have to read 50% for the meeting. We‘re usually good about finishing, but it‘s a good escape clause for those “bailing” moments. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Cinfhen I‘m going to suggest that @JackOBotts that seems fair!!!! I did finish the book but I really didn‘t like it at all 😖 so many readers that I share reading tastes with recommended this book @emilyhaldi but it just wasn‘t for me @TrishB @Cathythoughts Oh well 🥴we can‘t all like the same books all the time 5y

Bookclub meets on Tuesday so I need to finish this one. Although I was really looking forward to reading it, I‘m sort of struggling to pick it back up. I‘m not a fan of any of the MC‘s plus the NY art scene is NOT my preferred scene. Bailing is not an option with my bookclub so I‘ll just push through.

Leftcoastzen I really loved this book , sorry it‘s not clicking for you.Is this the same book club that picked your other “favorite”🙃 5y

Hooked_on_books I was planning on reading one of her books but then heard her on a podcast and she came across poorly (“putting on airs” is my best description of it). It may not be a fair look at her, but it made me not want to read her, unfortunately. 5y
CafeMom I loved the ending. I hope you do too. 5y
Reviewsbylola What will your book club do to you if you bail? 😬 5y
Cinfhen I feel like she‘s pretentious @Hooked_on_books which isn‘t very nice of me but her writing is niggling me HOWEVER, I‘m going to spend today finishing this book and hopefully it will turn around for me @CafeMom SO many trusted readers love this book so I‘m hoping it clicks @Reviewsbylola BAILING IS SIMPLY NOT AN OPTION 😉😂😂😂 5y

This book is about the characters, not the plot...at least for the first 2/3. Then it gains momentum and pivots into an anxiety-inducing thriller of sorts. Hustvedt brilliantly captivates the reader with her intricate weaving of relationships and tensions between two families (as well as their internal struggles) so that by the time action ramps up I was emotionally invested enough to experience their anxiety as my own.

MicheleinPhilly Sounds fabulous! 5y

It started as a leisurely-paced story of two arty families living in each other's pockets: all very nice, but... . Then she dropped a plot bomb that made me see how skilfully she'd lulled me into a false sense of security. And that turns out to be the warm-up act for an altogether more unsettling story.

Family, relationships, friendship, contemporary art, mental illness, how we perceive ourselves and others, the improbable endeavour of living...❤

Having an author on your TBR for FOREVER (and really wanting to read her because her books invariably sound amazing, and also she‘s a fellow graduate of your small-town Minnesota alma mater) + a Book Outlet sale = #bookhaulmotivation

mrozzz Awesome! I have all 4 but have only read Blazing World 6y
Christine @mrozzz Yay!! Did you like Blazing World? 6y
mrozzz It‘s very cool and well written. I was working in the art world at the time (in fact in one of the settings in Brooklyn described in the book) so I liked it that much more because I could relate to it. 6y

Christine @mrozzz That‘s so fun! Thanks for sharing. :) 6y

This took a lot of turns I wasn‘t expecting, and had me gripped in their lives at each turn. It doesn‘t read as if there‘s a set plot, it‘s not formulaic at all, but I loved the meandering through their lives over the years. It focuses a lot on art, artists, galleries and shows and I ended up going to the Brooklyn Museum just to get that gallery feel. Highly recommend! Sorry for the lack of detail, I don‘t want to spoil anything!!

What an amazing book. Not merely about the art world, as I had thought. In this novel, boundaries are broken in art, but families, people, and hearts are broken also. 💔💔💔 Don‘t want to give away anything by saying more. I had such a hard time putting this down, and feel that I can say this is one of the best I‘ve read in a long time. #1001Books

Kristelh No, but really enjoyed reading The New York Trilogy because Paul Auster mentions his wife in the trilogy as he also mentions himself. 6y

Oh, wow. This was my first Hustvedt, but I‘m pretty sure it won‘t be my last.

I expected this to be a daunting and high-brow read, but it turned out to be much more relateable than I imagined. Hustvedt demands something from her readers. This isn‘t an action-packed page turner. It is a slow character study filled with art, mental illness, friendships, grief and love. It left me quite breathless at times, at others I had a lump in my throat.

monalyisha Great review! Adding to my TBR. 🙌🏻 6y

Treated myself to a bunch of peonies today, and now I‘m going to treat myself further with a cup of coffee and some quiet reading time 👌

I‘m in the final stages with my thesis, and I‘m hoping to hand it in by the end of the month. Which is good, because I‘m beginning to tire of constantly thinking and worrying about it, and my energy is running low. Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz I know, we are having better weather than Southern Europe, it is crazy! It is pretty slow, but in a good way. I‘m about 80 pages in, and Hustvedt is doing a lot of character building, but I can feel something big is on its way! 6y

Billypar I love that 'dive-right-back-in' upon waking urge- my current read is like that. Glad you're enjoying it so much: if you're craving more Hustvedt after, @batsy and I were talking about doing a buddy read for The Blazing World this summer (June or July). She seems like a good BR author- lots to discuss and unpack! 6y
saresmoore @Billypar I would love to join that buddy read! My library has it, so I can do it without breaking my crazy buying ban. 😃 6y
Billypar @saresmoore Great! I'll let you know once we're deciding on a start date. Ugh though...good luck with the ban. I try to turn it into a euphemism- not a 'ban'...just waiting for my tbr shelf to get back to a smallish size and/or I suddenly come into newfound wealth 😋 6y
saresmoore @Billypar That is a very helpful way to look at it! I‘m finding an interesting phenomenon taking place, though. I always used to compare other purchases to “how many books could I buy with this?” but now I‘m just buying the other things because I‘m sad about not buying books. I‘m sure it will wear off, but the budget has yet to really benefit! Oh and I keep going to the library for challenges, so the TBR shelves are still towering... 🤔😬 6y
Billypar Ha- not to be a devil on the shoulder, but sounds like you could almost argue that you need to go to a bookstore for the good of the budget 😃 😈 6y

What I Loved: A Novel | Siri Hustvedt

“I‘ve always thought that love thrives on a certain kind of distance, that it requires an awed separateness to continue. Without that necessary remove, the physical minutiae of the other person grows ugly in its magnification.”

TheWordJar Oof. That is painfully true at times. 7y

saresmoore @Kalalalatja My goodness, it‘s beautiful so far. I‘m not even fifty pages in yet and I‘ve felt compelled to share two quotes! 7y
saresmoore @rohit-sawant I keep having those moments with this book. 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja You should read it soon, it really is so good. The writing and the storyline. So happy you‘re sharing these quotes with us, @saresmoore 😘 (edited) 7y
Suet624 Hahaha. I was just thinking, “Wow! This is the second quote!” And then you mentioned it in your comment. So glad you‘re enjoying it. 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 Oh, I love it so much! I‘m torn because I want to savor it, but I also want to devour it and then get it in the mail to Suba! 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 I am MESMERIZED by this book. I keep wondering how Siri Hustvedt wrote this. How did she know that random bit of trivia? How did she create such elaborate art pieces and character personalities in her mind? She writes with an ageless effortlessness that is so real and poignant and I don‘t even care where the story is going because I‘m utterly enthralled. 6y
Suet624 I know! It‘s so hard to describe how wonderful this book is but you‘re doing a good job. The art pieces alone are worth the read. 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 And then I got to part two last night and sat in bed reading for a full half hour with tears streaming down my face. Yet another facet of human experience depicted as well as I‘ve ever seen it. I‘m welling up just thinking about it! Not typically a cryer, here! 6y
Suet624 Well that‘s a great way to enter into a new year, now isn‘t it? You‘re having such a rich experience with this book. I love it. 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 It really is, though. Bryan was worried about me for a minute before I explained that this is what I want from a book, to experience it! 6y

“My parents didn‘t speak about the Nazis, only about our preparations to leave home, and it‘s hard to know to what degree my childish fears were related to the fear that every Jew in Germany must have felt at the time. The way my mother told it was that she was taken by surprise. A party whose views had seemed absurd and contemptible suddenly and inexplicably took hold of the country.”

Christine 😑 7y
Christine I‘m glad to hear you are enjoying the book though, as I‘ve been wanting to read Hustvedt for forever, not in small part because she and I both graduated from the same small Minnesota liberal arts college. If you end up loving this book I will take that as a sign to put her work off no longer! 7y
saresmoore @Christine What a fun coincidence! I will keep you posted. She‘s writing from a man‘s perspective and it threw me off at first, just because I expected the first-person narrator to be a woman. So far, I feel like I‘m getting pulled in deeper with every page. In a good way. 7y
Christine Oh, that is interesting! Yay for being drawn in by it so far. :) 7y
Suet624 That‘s quite the quote. Each day I worry about the insanity that we‘re experiencing and the damage that‘s being done to so many and to our democracy. It‘s frightening. On a cheerier note, I‘m so very excited that you‘re reading this. It‘s so good. @Leftcoastzen @BarbaraBB 7y

It is a lush , deep, novel. What I like so much about it , the characters are flushed out, complicated. How friendships begin , evolve ,and ride out the problems that come. How some difficulties seem to pounce upon you , yet when you look back on it, some of the signs were there.Hustvedt writes with power and intimacy, I felt I was part of their circle.

This was a slow, dense and meaty read. Love, loss, desire, art, memories, hysteria, mental health and the illnesses associated with it, friendship, betrayal. The descriptions of the artwork are captivating and inspiring. The pieces of art made me want to get busy with all sorts of materials. The book offers a deep immersion into these characters and I miss some of them already.

#MountTBR

BookwormM I really wanted to see the art work 7y
Leftcoastzen Aaaaaahhhhhh!gotta read this next ! Trying to finish some up before I start another. 7y
Suet624 @BookwormM there were so many beautiful pieces, but one particular image of the little girl sitting inside a piece looking at moon images really got me. Her crying as her mom pulled her out.... I could so relate to that. 7y

batsy I love a good book about art and the meaning of creation, stuff like that. @Billypar and @BarbaraBB already convinced me to stack it, and now it's triple stacked 😁 7y
Billypar Great review! The at imagery throughout is really fascinating. It's nice to see all the good buzz around this- I picked this up on a whim, and actually with a little reluctance - never heard of it, and wasn't that excited about the title or jacket description. But I saw Hustvedt read from another of hers and that was the deciding factor...good decision in retrospect 🙂 7y
BarbaraBB I agree on the art, its descriptions were so good, I wanted to see the works for real. There is a lot of art too in 7y
Suet624 @batsy Oh, I think you will really like it. 7y
Suet624 @Billypar it‘s such a double blessing when I read a book that I expect nothing from and it turns out to be a stunner. 😀 7y

Suet624 @Leftcoastzen I just looked back and @BarbaraBB was the person who got me interested in the book. 😀❤️ 7y
Billypar Yeah, I loved it: really draws you in, great characters and I loved how the art exhibitions were described. My only Hustvedt, but I have Blazing World on my shelf, so I'll probably be reading that soon. 7y
Suet624 @Billypar look forward to hearing what you think of it. (edited) 7y
minkyb This has always intrigued me especially after hearing her on a podcast a while back. Glad you are enjoying it. 7y
Suet624 @minkyb ohh, I‘ll have to find that podcast! 7y
BarbaraBB Glad that you liked it, it is one of those books I want everyone to read! I read two more by her that unfortunately couldn‘t match this one. One of them was The Blazing World so I hope you‘ll like it better, @Billypar ! 7y
minkyb It might have been Lit Up. 7y
Billypar @BarbaraBB Yeah I'm expecting to like it, but not necessarily that it will match WIL - that would be tough to do. 7y

Pickpick

Yes, I gave it a “pick”, but this book is brutal. It‘s about loss and grief, of all sorts. I had to take a multi-day break while reading it. Brutal. #1001books #192019 #2003 189/1305

Cinfhen Good to know...not ready for brutal😔 7y
TrishB @Cinfhen me neither! But a future read maybe. 7y
Cinfhen I think so @TrishB 7y
