In the tradition of our most acclaimed suspense writers, the author of The Last Town on Earth delivers a riveting and elegant police procedural set in Atlanta, a ripped-from-the-headlines depiction of a world on the cusp of great change involving race relations, city politics, and police corruption. Responding from pressure on high, the Atlanta police department is forced to hire its first black officers in 1948. The newly minted policemen are met with deep hostility by their white peers and their authority is limited: They cant arrest white suspects; they cant drive a squad car; they cant even use the police headquarters and must instead operate out of the basement of a gym. When a black woman who was last seen in a car driven by a white man turns up fatally beaten, no one seems to care except for Boggs and Smith, two black cops from vastly different backgrounds. Pressured from all sides, they will risk their jobs, the trust the community has put in them, and even their own safety to investigate her death. Their efforts bring them up against an old-school cop, Dunlow, who has long run the neighborhood like his own, and Dunlows young partner, Rakestraw, a young progressive who may or may not be willing to make allies across color lines. Set in the post-war, pre-civil rights South, and evoking the socially resonant and morally complex crime novels of Dennis Lehane, and Walter Mosley, Darktown is a vivid, smart, intricately plotted crime saga that explores the timely issues of race, law enforcement, and the uneven scales of justice.

Really good storytelling that lifts the stone of history to show the ugly side of racism in American society and institutions immediately post ww2. The fascinating factual basis behind this crime novel is the recruitment of the first 8 black policeman on to the Atlanta force so when a crime crosses the race boundaries tensions erupt as 2 officers seek the truth despite the opposition of corrupt white colleagues. Really good read.

This post war noir set in Atlanta Georgia follows the story of the first 8 black police officers and the corrupt system in which they find themselves. The prose is tight, compelling and impactful and the author pulls no punches in yelling this thrilling story. Great on #audio

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this historical fiction / mystery novel about the first 8 black officers in Altlana. It kept my attention and make me feel like I was right in the story with them. Parts were very hard to read as it had a lot of truth and racism to it, but it was a wonderful book that was well-written. I think it's a story everyone needs to read and learn from. I have book two (Lightening Men) ordered. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!

Excellent book. I'm enthralled but I want to punch officer Dunlow in the throat right now.... tough read. I have to keep taking breaks because the content is so heavy.

Wonderfully written historical fiction novel about the first 8 black cops in Atlanta with a bit of mystery but also a lot of gut-wrenching scenes.

66% done and can't wait to read part 2 called Lightening Men.

Normally you weren't supposed to look white folks in the eye. But Boggs was the police. This was only the third time he and Smith had dealt with a white perpetrator. Colored officers only patrolled the colored parts of town, where whites were infrequent visitors.

Ohhh no what's going to happen. 😮

Very well told story about the first African American police officers in Atlanta, pre Civil Rights. Full of characters that broke my heart, surprised me in a good way, and several I wanted to punch in the throat. Since moonshine repeatedly made appearances in the story, I thought I‘d include some in my picture. 😂 #MountTBR

Another excellent book on offer in the U.K. at the moment. This is quite a dark read, and hard to read because of the inherent racism presented but you feel duty bound to read it so we never go back to such dark times. It is set in Atlanta in 1948. It‘s 1948 in the Jim Crow south and racism is rampant. Atlanta has finally given in and hired eight black cops, but they are not allowed to drive cruisers or enter the police station. It becomes clear that the unethical white cops will do anything for #moneymoneymoney, and no one on the force is a fan of changing the status quo. Mixed in is the death of a young black woman. This book was AMAZING and will make you feel sick. #abbainaugust

Currently reading and this is fantastic! Also, I had no idea this was a series??? I just learned this week from my last podcast obsession #inthedark that governmentally mandated black police officers had no ability to arrest white people, couldn‘t drive squad cars, couldn‘t go to the precinct and couldn‘t wear their uniform to and from their shift. Wtf white people?? Thoroughly enjoying what I‘m learning and the mystery.

This was often a difficult read due to the inherent and rampant racism it portrayed in Atlanta in the 1940s but I have to say the author did a great job of this book and eliciting strong emotions about what was going on. At the same time it was a great story and mystery he pulled together whilst telling the story of the first eight black police officers. Quite a complex mystery that was put together and I enjoyed his writing style. Onto book 2!

I started reading this #KindleDailyDeal during #HurricaneMaria . I was loving the story, but the pacing was too slow for me during those early days where we were fearful of exiting our house. Once life resumed its routine, I finished it quickly and was very satisfied by this novel about Atlanta‘s first African American cops investigating the murder of an African American woman who may have been killed by a bigoted former policeman.

This was a fantastically tense and riveting book. The subject matter was not a pleasant read at times but that is unavoidable. The plot moved along fast and the characters were well developed and easy to root for in some cases and hate in others. I will definitely read the next book in this series very soon! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In 1948, Atlanta added 8 African American officers to its police force. They were segregated from the white officers and made to work out of the basement of the YMCA. They were not allowed to drive squad cars or arrest white people. This novel imagines what it must have been like for them. While the story was engrossing and the narrator was talented, the horror of the racism depicted made this a difficult, but necessary listen.

DGRachel I was really sad that Andre Holland didn‘t narrate the sequel. I switched to audio on Darktown last year during a blinding migraine and loved it. 7y

Murder mystery set in Jim Crow era Atlanta. A good bit of the history of the first eight Black members of the Atlanta Police Department is mixed in here to great effect. In fact, I think I would be more interested in reading a memoir from those brave men than I was in this story. The mystery is fine and twisty enough, but I found myself far more interested in the police officers themselves.
