Texas: A Novel | James A. Michener
Spanning four and a half centuries, James A. Micheners monumental saga chronicles the epic history of Texas, from its Spanish roots in the age of the conquistadors to its current reputation as one of Americas most affluent, diverse, and provocative states. Among his finely drawn cast of characters, emotional and political alliances are made and broken, as the loyalties established over the course of each turbulent age inevitably collapse under the weight of wealth and industry. With Michener as our guide, Texas is a tale of patriotism and statesmanship, growth and development, violence and betrayala stunning achievement by a literary master. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Texas Fascinating.Time A book about oil and water, rangers and outlaws, frontier and settlement, money and power . . . [James A. Michener] manages to make history vivid. The Boston Globe A sweeping panorama . . . [Michener] grapples earnestly with the Texas character in a way that Texass own writers often dont. The Washington Post Book World Vast, sprawling, and eclectic in population and geography, the state has just the sort of larger-than-life history that lends itself to Mr. Micheners taste for multigenerational epics. The New York Times

Mr K had his mammoth 14hr one to one BBQ course today. He trimmed and cooked a brisket. I browsed and swapped book recommendations in the bookstore!

julesG Actually, both activities sound fun. Since it's more relaxing, I'd have chosen the bookstore, too. 5y

To my fellow Texas littens, you may know this already, but I just discovered it today. You can get a library card to the Houston Public Library for FREE if you're a Texas resident. For someone like me, who lives in a small town and uses Overdrive/Libby frequently, this is great news 😁 You can register online and instantly use Houston's online database of books on Overdrive. 📚 Non-residents can apply as well, but it's $40 per year for an account.

I'm taking a mini vacation to Texas on Friday! Two nights in Austin, two nights in San Antonio. I'm from Boston and it's my first visit to Texas! Do any of you Littens have any recommendations? Books, food, sights, cool local hangouts? Thanks!

DivineDiana Have fun! 6y
Quirkybookworm Everything's big there and wide open space! 6y
GingerAntics The river walk in san antonio is great. If you do the river boat, be careful. If you feel like there isn't enough room for you, wait for the next boat. They pressured us to get on in that situation and I ended up with a sprained ankle when we were forced to climb over people to get to the back, the driver took off, nearly throwing me out if the boat, then took off as soon as we docked. Just be careful and look out for yourself on those boats. 6y

Lauren.Archer Austin you must go to BookPeople, it is the largest independent bookstore in Texas. If you are looking for some good restaurants any place off of South Congress is great Perla‘s, Boticelli‘s, Guero‘s, South Congress Cafe and Home Slice Pizza are all great. Feel free to hit me up for more suggestions as I live here and know lots of good spots. Have fun! 6y
Melissa_J I‘ve only been to San Antonio. I really liked it. As mentioned above, the river walk is a nice activity. Also make sure you visit The Alamo! 6y
AmandaEve I second BookPeople! 👌🏽I also love hiking at the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Definitely recommend checking out Banger‘s Sausage House and Beer Garden or Javelina on Rainey Street. Also love going to The Domain for the night life. 6y
Joy0201 Book People! We were just in San Antonio and they had a lot of cool indie bookstores. 6y
Joy0201 And maybe check out a movie at an Alamo Drafthouse! 6y
Jilly6183 @GingerAntics oh no!! I doubt we'll take the boat but that's good to know. @Lauren.Archer I have some time to kill after I land so I think I will head directly to BookPeopl! And I'm going to look into these others recs too. Thanks!! 6y
Jilly6183 @AmandaEve Thank you! What kind of place is The Domain? 6y
Jilly6183 I mean now I definitely have to go to BookPeople with all these recommendations! @Lauren.Archer @AmandaEve @Joy0201 6y
AmandaEve @Jilly6183 it has a bunch of shops, restaurants and bars. It‘s in north Austin, a lot nicer than going out to 6th street at night haha 6y

I have a bookish dilemma. Many years ago I read a Michener book that takes place partly in #Mexico and partly in Texas. The only other detail I remember is a car chase involving a Cadillac. I *think* It was the book Mexico, but it could have been this one? 🤷🏻‍♀️

My second time through this book. Really enjoying reading about a part of the world that you hear so much about but know very little. They‘re “big” books and this can turn some people off but the effort is well worth it.

Twice, I have taken the train from Detroit, through Chicago and on to Texas. My son and family live outside Houston. It‘s a 27+ hour ride to northern Texas, then a 4+ hour bus ride to Houston. Phew! My favorite place to hang out is the observation car, where you meet all the sociable people from all over the USA and more! As for the tagged book, I have had it on my shelf for about 8 years and it is still unread. #HeyJune #TickettoRide

MelAnn I have never taken a train ride - I think it would be fun - especially enjoying views like that! 6y
emtobiasz I ❤️ taking the train— so much more space than a bus or a plane seat! The delays can be brutal, though, depending on Amtrak. 6y

Cinfhen That‘s quite a journey!!! But what a lovely way to see America 6y
Suzze @emtobiasz Oh, yes! On my trip back the first time, after my 4 hour bus ride, the train was delayed about 6 hours. What a long wait! 6y
SilversReviews I love this observation deck. Is this an Amtrak train? I always take the train from Pittsburgh to New York, but nothing like this is available. Thanks for sharing. 6y
Mdargusch Looks like a great way to travel! 6y
CaitZ I love taking the train to my vacation spot. It's such a relaxing way to travel. 6y
Suzze @SilversReviews yes, Amtrak. I think they only have these on the longer trips. 6y

Still driving across Texas. Everybody goes through the border control checkpoint about 60 miles in from the border. I was racing away from the bands of the hurricane that hit landfall in Mexico. Went through a little rain so I got out of dodge before the worst of it hit, I hope. Taking a DQ ice cream break now in a tiny town called George West. Still two hours from home...

Some more sights as I drove the back country roads in south Texas. Sprawling acreage with cattle enjoying the bounty (such a difference from what I've seen of cattle yards elsewhere--not Texas). Couldn't resist when the cattle were Longhorns! And countless oil wells in the famous Eagle Ford Shale counties.

Bostonmomx2 I love the longhorns! 7y

My husband and I have the 60-page rule. If a book doesn't grab you in the first 60 pages, give it up. This one, though, I went much farther and #DNF not once, but twice. I've read most of Michener's fiction and liked most of it (except Alaska. I should have applied the rule there😊). But I just got bogged down with Texas, and I don't think I'm having a third go. #readJanuary

Julsmarshall @youngreadrshelf there is a Doubltree at 15th and Lavaca is is close to the capitol and is usually cheaper than the downtown hotels.
