@Catsandbooks & @AsYouWish - Thanks ladies for the tag
1. the tagged book (the series actually) & the Harry Potter Series. I want to just haven't. There is so many books to read. haha
2. I have only re-read books once. so can't really answer this. (Well my son has a few books that he makes me read him over and over... can't remember what they are tho)
3. Goodreads says 8,666
4. Sad to say, I don't really read nonfiction

Alright I‘m going there. Anastasia and Christian - I am calling them out. The toxic relationship of changing so much for each other and then the reliance on each other just is ridiculous. I get that it‘s Twilight fan fic but there‘s a reason why Twilight is fantasy. It just didn‘t translate well for me as adult erotic fiction. #lovehate #worstcouple

madamereadsalot1 I've never even read these, but I've read enough on them, and read scenes from them to 100% agree that this is a terribly toxic relationship, and it makes me all kinds of mad that abuse/manipulation is romanticized. 11mo

Public service announcement::: fifty shades of grey and twilight did not make it to the top forty 🙌🙌🙌🙌

What books are you rooting for? I would love to see The Help, Outlander, 1984, the Book Thief many others make it a few more rounds. I'm rooting for The Help to win.

A miraculous thing happened tonight.... my 23 year old daughter called and asked me for book suggestions!!! This has NEVER happened!! She has read Fifty Shades and loved it (I hated it 🤢🤮) and some Nicholas Sparks... What do y‘all suggest?? I‘ve got NS covered, but I‘m at a loss with the other genre 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Help!!!!!!

EclecticBookLover If she likes Nicholas Sparks try Jane Green. I would start with Second Chance or The Beach House. Elin Hildebrand is also good. 2y
wanderinglynn If she likes NS, what about Nora Roberts? 2y
Pamwurtzler Give her something good - I‘d say Beatriz Williams. Or Elin Hildebrand is good too 2y
See All 29 Comments
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @EclecticBookLover I have lots of Elin Hilderbrand!! I think she liked the other ones better... 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Pamwurtzler I tried suggesting Evelyn, but she wasn‘t going for it... I can‘t bear to have her not like Beatriz 💚💚 2y
YouReadMyEyes Haha. She would probably like Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. 2y
mcipher Jennifer Crusie? Super light funny romance. 2y
IamIamIam I'm out of my depth with those criteria but what about Cecilia Ahern? I read PS I Love You, but the movie was better. LOL... what about this? 2y
tammysue You may try Jodi Picoult or Emily Giffin. My daughter and her friends enjoy their books (and hey our daughters are the same age 😉) 2y
xicanti Tiffany Reisz and Rebekah Weatherspoon both write GOOD BDSM. She should try them next. 2y
EclecticBookLover If she prefers NS to Elin, then I would definitely go Jane Green. Her early stuff is focused on younger people early 20s but her middle stuff like The Beach House is more middle age focused, but with a broad appeal. 2y
Theshadedbuffalo Maya Banks writes a lot of the Shades of Grey like books. 2y
Cinfhen My daughter LOVED this book 2y
Cinfhen She also loves Karin Slaughter and she liked 2y
Cinfhen Also Gone Girl & Girl on the train and 2y
Melwilk My daughter also loves NS (fortunately, she hated 50 shades 👏) and one of her favorites is 2y
Nebklvr Has she read Jodi Picoult? She seems to have a lot of crossover love with Nicholas Sparks 2y
SaturnDoo I say go here http://www.literature-map.com/e-2e+l-2e+james.html and litetature map will give you authors that are similar in writing and style 😁 2y
JMEdwards @SaturnDoo that link is great! 2y
Sophoclessweetheart Oh dear. Can‘t help I‘m afraid. 2y
Caroline2 I would recommend Sarah J Maas! 👍🏻 (edited) 2y
BooknerdsLife My sister was not a big reader but loved Big Little Lies and What Alice Forgot. And Sarah J Maas's A Court of Thornes & Roses series is great choice too🤗💜 2y
amb I endorse the Jodi Picoult recommendation , her stuff is rarely straight romance, but it can make you cry. 2y
Soubhiville If she would be into fantasy and lots of political intrigue, Kushiel‘s Dart is the first of a trilogy (and there are three trilogies in this world). They show a different side of BD/SM that most consider healthier and more realistic, even though it‘s fantasy. 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks everyone!!! I‘m going to screenshot these suggestions and send them to her!!! 🙌🏻💕 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @swishandflick I actually liked these better that fifty shades!! 2y

I must admit I did like the fifty shades trilogy when I read it years ago but I‘ve been avoiding the movies cause I just didn‘t think the books needed to be made into movies but I‘ve given up and I‘m going to binge watch. I‘ve heard mixed reviews so I hope they‘re not too terribly cringeworthy

AllenTStClair I‘ve actually seen the first two...and they‘re okay if you keep perspective on what type of movies they are. 🤣 2y
CoverToCoverGirl I saw the first movie .. IMO it was awful 😬 and I really liked the books (guilty pleasure) so I won‘t be viewing the rest... but rumour has it that lots of people did like the movies.🤷‍♀️ (edited) 2y

This is what I immediately thought of for #StalkerKindOfLove - I read the first book when literally everyone seemed to be reading it (including my grandma) but I could barely get through it - to me it‘s so badly written and their relationship is seriously destructive. I can‘t believe the series and film are so successful but I don‘t like to judge other people‘s tastes so I‘m glad some do like it I guess !
#HeartsAndHardcovers

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m with you, I read it then too. And I felt like it was Red Flag city, I was waiting for her to be kidnapped and sold into slavery somewhere (like Taken), but I read the whole original trilogy hoping I‘d at least understand the fervor, and I do.. it‘s the kinky sex, the rest is just horrible writing and bad relationships. 2y
Christine11 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Totally agree with you - the whole relationship seemed so abusive and like you say, it must be the sex that makes it so popular because it can‘t be the awful writing, plus none of the characters were even vaguely likeable least of all the main two ! 😊 2y
julesG It was my first thought, too. I'm grossing myself out reading 'Darker' right now, second book from Christian's POV. It's soo bad, it isn't even a #guiltypleasure. 2y
See All 16 Comments
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think EL James was lucky to be able to make it to mass market. There are far better kinky books out there and were on the market before 50 Grades of Shame. It helped make Literotica popular but it is definitely not the first, nor the best, series on the market. 2y
Christine11 @julesG I‘m not sure I could handle hearing his point of view - hers was annoying enough ! You‘re totally right - it‘s not a genre I read a lot of but I‘m betting there are really well written or at least more enjoyable books and I feel bad for those authors that Fifty Shades has been so overwhelming successful! 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I can‘t either.... I forced myself through the first one... 2y
Christine11 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I had to force myself to finish it too - I wanted to throw it at the wall 😂 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I couldn‘t agree more!!!! 2y
AndiM The 1st film was awful! Not looked at others. 2y
Christine11 @AndiM It was terrible wasn‘t it ?! I have no idea how they are so popular! 2y
AndiM @Christine11 I watched it whilst merrily doing my ironing... that's how exciting it was..😂😂😂 2y
Christine11 @AndiM I don‘t think even the actors thought it was any good ! 😂🙄 2y
AndiM @Christine11 I don't know Dakota, but I thought that the guy Jamie?was great in a series with the woman who was Scully. You can tell I don't watch much tv 😂😂😂 2y
Christine11 @AndiM It was The Fall I think 😊 and I agree - he was fantastic in that series - wish he hadn‘t done 50 shades ! 😊💗 2y
AndiM @Christine11 Yessss! That's the one! It was very good. Scared me 😲 2y

swishandflick I'm not opposed to 50 shades, but I do think there are better "alpha male" romances out there (I always think of the Crossfire series as an example) and wonder why 50 Shades in particular took off. I'm never one to hold someone's book preferences against them though so I'm in the "whatever gets people reading" camp. (edited) 2y

Ms_T @sprainedbrain @minkyb I‘m sooooo tempted! 2y
Peterfox123 @Ms_T A genuinely serious, and real life, account of a woman coming to terms with her alternative sexuality is Jillian Keenan's "Sex With Shakespeare". Her progress is interwoven with her descriptions and analyses of a series of Shakespeare‘s characters. It‘s not smut. It‘s not tacky. It‘s just a great read. Oh, and she‘s living in Senegal now and recently adopted a tiny kitten called Nugget - but I digress. 2y
Ms_T @Peterfox123 I‘ll definitely check this out. 2y
AJones Yes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️I read the first two books from this series. And I have to say, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was the best thus far. It was a real page turner. Not because of the sexual excerpts. . .I was more intrigued about their new, but strange relationship. I would give the book a chance, everyone has their own opinion. I haven‘t watched the 🎥, so I cannot compare the two. The writing isn‘t perfect, but neither is mine. Enjoy! 2y
Ms_T @AJones I listened to the audiobook in the end and enjoyed it. It was just what I needed at the time and I‘ll definitely listen to the subsequent two 👍🏻 2y

There are many popular things I have not read or delayed significantly. Fifty shades of Grey is one I will never read. I've also never read anything by Stephen King, because Horror is not really my thing, but I might eventually read something. I delayed reading he Harry Potter books and was disappointed by the first, finding it terribly derivative, but the next couple were better. One day I'll read the rest, probably with my son @ItsAngel

ItsAngel @DivaDiane I‘m right there with you on 50 Shades, I will never read it. Kind has quite a bit that‘s not really horror, maybe you‘ll find something perfect when the time is right. 2y
DivaDiane @ItsAngel Oh yes, I always forget his Science Fiction/Fantasy (?) which I'm definitely intrigued by, but I think he's better known for all those books that were made into Horror flicks when I was a teenager (Carrie, Pet Semetary, Cujo - showing my age...) and that's not my cup of tea. 2y
ItsAngel @DivaDiane I think you‘re right, he is definitely more known for the horror stuff. King is very hit or miss for me...he is wordy to a fault. 2y

For my next selection of #februaryisforromantsy here's the Big Kahuna! I grew up reading #romantsy but I had kind of been in a romance rut - I wasn't feeling the Harlequins anymore, and couldn't find my flavor in the early #selfpub selection. 50 Shades jump started me again, it caught my imagination like nothing else had. It's not perfect (could use a good edit, and some of the Grey antics are squicky) but it's a juggernaut. #meghanreadsromantsy

#BookLove17 #LoveToHate

I have only read snippets of this series and I hate it. There is just so much wrong with the main characters and the way infatuation and abuse is portrayed. I have nothing against erotica or bdsm, but this isn't either of those and it saddens me that women think they want a man like Christian Grey (there are even Christian Grey strippers for god sake!) 😤

(I do think people can enjoy reading this though)

Rant over!

Smangela That was one of the things that bothered me too. I read plenty of articles about how 50 Shades was not accurately reflecting BDSM and that BDSM was much more respectful of both people in the relationship. Misinformation! But also, Christian himself was sexually abused as a child by "Mrs. Robinson" and when my friends talked about the book, that was NEVER something that was brought up. I was shocked when I read that. I agree with your analysis ? 3y

LibrarianRyan @BillBlume let me look. My answer is yes but I can not remember titles off the top of my head. 3y
LibrarianRyan @BillBlume off the top of my head I want to say T.A. Grey but I think those were werewolves. I'll still check. 3y
BillBlume @LibrarianRyan, thanks! Did a quick glance at Grey's books, and looks like there's a series with vampires in it. I'll check those out. 3y
JoRead I don't love-hate these books. I simply hate them. So many other great examples of better erotic reads out there 3y

I very rarely #DNF books...but these were just unbearable. And the one on the left nauseated me so severely I thought I'd lose my Panera dinner. Also, wtf is up with the cover on the middle one? Worst graphic design ever. 🤢 #readJanuary

Reagan I had a few friends who read 50 Shades of Grey as a joke, and all of them recommended that I not read it because it's terrible. 3y
JoRead I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way about FSOG. I devour romance but that... I don't know what that was. 😯😫 3y
howjessreads So funny how tastes are different! The Sparrow is literally the only books I've ever stayed up all night reading. I couldn't stop, it was so mesmerizing! But yeah the cover is pretty terrible. :) 3y

MrBook 😍😍😍 3y
Smangela So many people annoyed me telling me how I wouldn't like FSOG in super patronizing tones because I don't tell dirty jokes, discuss sex life with people, etc? So that annoyed me and I read it to be able to explain I didn't like it not because it had sex scenes but because the writing was awful (IMO) and no one ever mentioned the sexual abuse when Christian was a child?! How does everyone gloss over that 3y
LibrarianRyan I never tried to read FSoG. I review erotica for publishers and for library journal. I had so many fellow reviewers tell me how bad the writing was. When people at the library asked for it I tried to steal them to better titles. Espically people who I didn't think could handle the S&M parts. 3y
angrylilasian I chose not to read FSOG but I read the 1 star reviews for it instead and they were HILARIOUS. 😂 3y
Craftylikefox I really wanted to like Two Years, Eight Months and Twenty Eight Nights. It sounded so interesting to me. I couldn't finish it either. I am glad to know I wasn't alone in that feeling. 3y
obviateit I never wanted to read FSoG, partly because I don't usually read books that stray too far past kissing (LOL), but mostly because I had this thought: would women be swooning over Christian's behavior if he were a poor, plain-looking man? No? That would make it skeevy? HARD PASS. 🙅🏻 3y
LisaJo I've read The Sparrow. It was very disturbing at points (as intended, I believed). I still think about it two years later. I know there's a sequel but I haven't been able to bring myself to read that. (edited) 3y
Ubookquitous I DNFed FSOG too. Horrid writing, shallow, trope-fest. And that Swallow cover looks like the team voted and tied on the cover so they said 'put half of each' 3y
monalyisha Took me approximately two years, eight months, and twenty-eight nights to finish the Rushdie. 😩 (edited) 3y
LeslieO Oh! I loved The Sparrow! 3y
JacqMac I couldn't get through FSoG either. The writing was painful. 3y
Vexingcircumstance I couldn't stand FSOG. I have no issues with BDSM when it's a healthy relationship but there is a giant difference between healthy BDSM and emotionally abusive and manipulative. Guess which side FSOG falls on? I gave up on it halfway through . between the awful writing and unhealthy relationship I couldn't handle it. There are better written books with much healthier BDSM relationships/sex in them. I read those instead lol. 3y
Zelma @LibrarianRyan I can definitely relate! I am all for erotica, if that's what a reader wants, but there is so much better erotica out there! I used to keep a typed up list at the reference desk for everyone who had read Fifty Shades and when all of our Zane copies were stolen. 🙄 3y
Rebekaaah I finished all 3 shades of grey books, (for my sins) as I didn't want to be defeated by them. But they are the worst load of drivel I've ever read. They are not sexy at all!! Firstly, there's a nothing sexy about a guy controlling your life, and also the sex scenes were crap and not at all appealing. I say that as someone who reads a lot of romance - I know a good sex scene when I read one, and those books have none. 3y
Carleneishere Ugh, the Sparrow cover design is so bad. I almost DNFed it when it got bogged down in backstories for each character, but once they got going in their big journey, I was hooked. Jesuit-educated though, so I may be biased 💁🏽 3y
Susanita It would be a shame to lose a Panera dinner. 3y
LibrarianRyan @Zelma I find that is one category a lot people will not ask for. My library has color coded spine labels so we did just the smallest line of pink at the top of the call number so patrons could find erotica without asking. 3y
Zelma @LibrarianRyan that is a great idea. I ended up fielding question because most of our well-known erotica was missing from the shelves, so it was my chance to do a promotional spiel when they asked where certain titles were. 😀 3y
minkyb Love the backdrop of fire! 3y
Ncostell I DNF Fifty Shades either and I rarely give up on a book. 3y
BookBabe @minkyb It seemed appropriate 😉👍🏻 3y

josie281 Nope. No desire. Read one random page and thought it was poorly written. 3y
Marchpane Consider yourself lucky to not have wasted any time on it. 3y
haileybean I hate read the series. I wish I hadn't. I wish I had just followed my instincts and just noped on outta there. 3y
Reviewsbylola I read a couple pages because my friend wouldn't stop begging me to. No effin way. 3y
BraveNewBooks @haileyhugsbooks if I did ever read it, it would definitely be a hate read, so it's helpful to know that even THAT wasn't worth your time. 3y
lynneamch Same here. BUT, if you ever get a chance to see the spoof 50 Shades: The Musical, go. I saw it off-Broadway and it is hilarious. It was touring, too. 3y

For today's #readjanuary: #BooksEveryoneButYouHasRead. No plans to read it either. (As I am an ornery reader who mostly dislikes books that are very popular with wide swaths of the population, I was actually paralyzed by too many options--couldn't figure out which one to choose out of several dozen titles that immediately came to mind!).

Zelma Me too! Me too! On all points. 👋 3y
CocoReads It's rare that I regret reading even bad books but these were truly terrible and I regret reading all of them. 3y
DebinHawaii I succumbed to pressure and read the first one and never had a desire to read any more. 😬 3y

Abby-J It just sounds so awful. 3y
lynneamch S&M just not of interest to me. I didn't (& won't) read these either, but I saw the spoof Fifty Shades: the Musical off-Broadway and it was HILARIOUS! It was touring for awhile. Worth seeing whether you liked (or read) the books, or not. Great dancing & a pro-feminist bent. Seriously. 3y
Blaire I've never read this either. Not sure I could get past the reportedly terrible writing. 3y
LazyOwl I've never read this either & have no desire to. I've the writing is not that great anyway 3y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Same. No regrets. 3y

Have not, will not read this series, have no interest whatsoever! I think the fact that "everyone" was reading it was another turn off for me.

rubyslippersreads Ditto! 😄 3y
EloisaJames Me too! And everyone thinks I have, being a romance writer. 3y
britt_brooke I read the first one out of sheer curiosity. It was the biggest piece of garbage I've ever read. Not only was the story ridiculously bad, the writing was atrocious. 3y

Graciouswarriorprincess Have a great tour! Love those 👔 ! 😊 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I would have found a tie to match the foggy, cloudy quality of the trailer for the book. Yes, I know, I'm a pain. Lol 3y

Panpan

just couldn't get into it .

EmilyChristine I made myself read it. Just so I could have a true opinion on it. It was awful. The writing was bad and the relationship abusive. 3y
BookWarriorPrincess93 I skim it. The book was an uninteresting rip off of Twilight. The relationship was definitely abusive 3y
Naryamie It was a twilight rip off. It started as twilight fan fiction and then she changed the names in order to publish. I don't see the appeal. Haven't bothered to even try and read it. 3y

Heard so much about this book, finally decided to give it a read. Hated it. Cannot finish it. I found the writing horrible and the main character pathetic.

lynneamch I didn't even try, based on the little bits I heard. But, I saw the parody of it off-Broadway and it was hilarious! 3y

I liked the story overall, although I could do with a bit less sex scenes.
