The smash-hit debut novel for every woman who has ever had a complicated love-hate friendship. Now A Major Motion Picture - In Theaters May 6thRachel White is the consummate good girl. A hard-working attorney at a large Manhattan law firm and a diligent maid of honor to her charmed best friend Darcy, Rachel has always played by all the rules. Since grade school, she has watched Darcy shine, quietly accepting the sidekick role in their lopsided friendship. But that suddenly changes the night of her thirtieth birthday when Rachel finally confesses her feelings to Darcy's fiance, and is both horrified and thrilled to discover that he feels the same way. As the wedding date draws near, events spiral out of control, and Rachel knows she must make a choice between her heart and conscience. In so doing, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

Here‘s my reading progress for a book I‘m currently reading. I started listening to Something Borrowed and I‘m enjoying it. If I end up liking this book, I‘ll read the sequel Something Blue. I put a hold on the sequel in case I like this book but I also found the sequel on Scribd. If the sequel doesn‘t become available for me to borrow after finishing this book then I‘ll cancel my hold on Libby and listen to it on Scribd.

I rewatched this movie which I find kind of infuriating and thought it was worth reading the book to compare.

The characters are just as frustrating in book form lol

Putting this in a free space on my #bookspinbingo board

TheDaysGoBy I found the movie way more enjoyable than the book. Though I agree the movie has its own set of faults. I love Ginnifer Goodwin though so that really saved the character for me and kept her from being too annoying/unlikeable 3y

While I‘m selecting pick, it is not without hesitation.

Darcy is due to marry Dex, but there is one problem. Her best friend Rachel also loves him and, not only that, Rachel and Dex are sleeping together!

I just couldn‘t really wrap my head around Rachel and was never really rooting for things to work out between her and her BEST FRIEND‘s fiancé.

Movie was better in my opinion!

Annie1215 I remember me and my friends feeling this way when we saw the movie - hard to root for 3y

Early morning reading is probably my absolute favorite time to read. This is probably the biggest reason why I get so excited when school isn't in session. I know I had the weekend, however, I got distracted by house work and my cats. I finally finished my #doublespin from April. This was a book where I‘d seen the movie first and honestly, I think that worked to the book‘s advantage. I love Ginnifer Goodwin, but getting more into Rachel‘s head in the book…it felt like she was whining about how Darcy always wins. So I think I‘m slotting this for #wineorwhine prompt of #booked2020

It wasn‘t a bad story but strangely I think I actually liked the movie more

@TheAromaofBooks

Cinfhen Nice pick ❣️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes I feel like I end up liking whichever one I see/read first - so like if I see a movie first, I like it better than the book and vice versa. Great review!! 4y

Wow, rude much?

We‘re all entitled to our opinions. Having read several of Giffin‘s books, mine is that she‘s a mediocre writer and should spend less time criticizing the Sussexes and more time improving her craft.

Infidelity with your best friends fiancé is a big fat no-no, uh-uh, don‘t go there even if your friend is selfish, manipulative and self centered. I really wanted to dislike Rachel for her shallowness but Emily Giffin managed to write her in a somewhat sympathetic way. Something Borrowed is Chick-lit at its absolutely most scandalous best. It‘s the kind of book that you are embarrassed to get caught reading yet you can‘t seem to put it down.

marleed I like her books. I enjoy reading most when I mix genres and chic lit mixed in with heavier reads helps me appreciate all genres. I‘m trying, though, to evaluate a book within its genre and that‘s hard for me. IE. I just read She Said so other books fail in comparison to what that book means! 4y
Loric @marleed I am with you. The only time I compare books is if they are within a series, similar to this one. I feel like trying to rate books by comparing them for their literary value isn‘t always “fair” so I try to rate them by what the book is trying to do in itself and try to balance its merits. There is no easy way, but a book like Giffin‘s received a rating for its entertainment value, ability to hold my interest, etc. 4y

All of the characters in this book are completely despicable except for Ethan. However, Ethan serves literally no purpose except an excuse for the main character‘s bad behavior. That said, it is surprisingly fun to read. Three out of five stars.

I read about halfway before I decided to bail. This is a book about a girl having an affair with her best friend‘s fiancé. The best friend is kind of a bitch and she REALLY likes the guy so apparently that makes it okay. I dunno, the idea of being cheated on just makes me sick to my stomach so the whole premise was distasteful to me. I actually liked the writing so I‘m not against the author just the theme.

Awesome book. I‘m glad that Rachel ended up in the “right” direction - I think so many women in this world play the role of the perfect daughter, wife, friend, mother ... in reality though, once you take a stand for what makes you happy, you might not be perfect in someone else‘s eyes. And that is sometimes just fine.

It was a quick read with memorable characters. I love both Rachel and Darcy. Dex not so much. To be honest, I did not want it to end the way it did, unrealistic. Everything just worked out in the end. It was kind of expected. I think that's the problem with most romantic books, you just know who ends up with who at the end and everybody comes home a winner.

BethM I didn't care for this either, but happily ever after is why I read romance. It's nice for everything to work out, however unrealistic. 6y
bookworm.krizia @BethM it just took out a major collateral damage - Darcy - out of the question. Darcy falling in love with Marcus was a bit too much. Well, that's romance for you. :) 6y

Emily Giffin books have always been hit or miss for me. I read most of them though, always hoping they‘ll be better than they are. I blame it on her one novel I loved, Where We Belong. The perfect thing about this book‘s movie adaptation is it actually totally matched how I felt about the book. I liked the cast and wanted to like the story more, but both fell far short of anything spectacular. #thebookwasntbetter #fyaphotoaday

Bostonmomx2 She was the same for me until I just quit her. The last one I was read “the One and Only” or something like that and it grossed me out. Elin Hilderbrand is another I had mixed reviews on and finally just stopped altogether. 7y

My pick for the #ReadingWomenMonth Challenge #day24 #FavoriteBookSeries ? is Something Borrowed ? and Something Blue ? by Emily Giffin. ?

Disclaimer: The title of this book is convenient as I "borrowed" this pic from someone online. ? I read and enjoy mostly stand alone books, but this one is one of my favorites ? Other series I have read and enjoyed: #HarryPotter #HungerGames #AnneOfGreenGables #CuckcoosCalling and #Divergent

DimeryRene Something Borrowed is really one of my favorites. I think I've read it three times. Didn't like Something Blue though. :/ 7y

I really didn't like that the whole book was about cheating. I don't think I'll read the next one in this series.

This book is about cheating. Specifically a girl cheating with her Best Friend's Fiance...... I had a hard time with it as I abhor cheating. But, I pushed through it( not because it was boring or bad) and overall I can say I enjoyed it. The second book (about the jilted best friend Darcy) however is much better! Read the first book, it's good, but the second book is great!

I'm still not sure how I feel about this book! I honestly don't like Rachel, she's very passive and doesn't seem to have an opinion of her own. It's hard to root for a heroine like that. I loved hating Darcy, though, and the story certainly kept me hooked! I would still recommend it to friends.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I had very similar ambivalent feelings for this one when I read it with my book club...I did not pick up the next one in the series, but if you do let me know if it's better or not. 8y

Ok so this is an easy book to love or hate. I loved it. Because it was so easy to imagine happening. Especially when you have that one person in your life who is a genuine bitch and a man who you know deserves better! So much better than the movie but the casting for that was great.
