A divorce attorney is murdered Hawthorne is asked to investigate, is it related to a contentious divorce or a caving accident from the past? Hawthorne asks Horowitz to be his sidekick again, so Horowitz can write a second book. The murder mystery was good, it is fun to watch the relationship between H and H develop. Overall a good read.

Another Anthony Horowitz audiobook! I liked this better than the first one in the series. The mystery wasn't necessarily better (although it was good), but I think I'm getting used to the self-insertion of the author. I got the first three books on sale from Libro.fm, so I'll be starting the third one soon.

As is becoming standard for this series, though one could argue book two is premature to make the judgement, I don't really feel comfortable recommending this to anyone else, as much I remain entertained. The Watson-type narrator remains a bit of a drip, and the detective-type varies from fondly exasperating to a complete asshole.
1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 The elements of the mystery were a bit predictable, but for whatever reason, it's still the characters that keep me coming back; they are inching closer to a friendship. Yes, I'll be reading the third book. We'll see if Hawthorne finally does something that stops me from reading the next. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The Sentence is Death is the second installment in the Hawthorne and Horowitz Mystery. Daniel Hawthorne is a private investigator who has author Anthony Horowitz at his side writing a book about Hawthorne‘s current investigation. Nothing like a good old fashion murder mystery in the style of Sherlock Holmes. The two investigate the murder of a very successful divorce attorney for celebrities. 🍷

I almost quit this several times. The book itself was great, but the voice the narrator chose to give the adversarial police detective was so grating that I could hardly bear it. The character was awful and had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. That combo is lethal (pun intended). I definitely had the urge to throw my phone across the room several times while listening. I recommend you skip the audiobook on this one, and read it on the page.

I actually liked this one better than the one first in the series. Hawthorne was just as insufferable but there were more awful characters that made me root for him a bit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Now I‘m rather looking forward to book #3 coming out later this year. The resplendent Rory Kinnear narrates this book as he did the first of the series.

Just finished this for the #tbrdeckofcards challenge (an audiobook). It was pretty good, but spoiled for me by the 2D villain of the piece, a bent cop. It didn‘t help that the narrator was holding the idiot ball on how to deal with it (my dude, you a. Have a phone you can record her threats on, and b. Are a famous kids author, with a good chance that one of her superiors‘ kids is a fan. It‘s not rocket science).

On a freezing cold day, what‘s the best thing to do? Finish my Horowitz novel of course. So far, I have really enjoyed the few novels I have read by this author. This one was no exception, although not my favourite. It was nice to reconnect with eccentric detective Daniel Hawthorne over a cup of hot tea 3.5/5⭐️

I really enjoyed The Word is Murder - I thought Horowitz‘ gimmick of fictionalizing himself was a fresh take on things. But this one was a bit of a letdown. Maybe I just wasn‘t in the right frame of mind but I was just irritated at both Horowitz and Hawthorne for most of the book. The end did redeem the book, though.

I'm not sleeping well (I'm never a *great* sleeper, but it's worse now with worry over the world—including my EMT younger son), so I'm having a hard time concentrating on anything. Maybe if I had read this at a more normal time, I'd like it even more. At this time, I'd rate this a 3+/4- (out of 5).

It's a pretty good mystery—multiple murders and multiple suspects. The narrator was annoying to me. I haven't decided about author-as-character.

Horowitz is one of those authors I constantly praise and try to convince more people to read. In his second book featuring himself as Watson to the cantankerous detective Hawthorne, Hawthorne and Horowitz investigate a murder with clues that somewhat play homage to Holmes. It‘s so good and clever! I‘m using this for the #FavoriteAuthor prompt for #GrowUp #BBRC . Horowitz is truly one of my contemporary favorites.

Jumping into #24B42020 as well.

Andrew65 @ljuliel I need. To read Magpie Murders, I enjoyed The Word is Murder, quite different. 5y
ljuliel @Andrew65 @LiteraryinLititz @Librarybelle I need to look them up to see if they‘re all in a series and which numbers I have. As I said previously in another post, I have tended to go a bit off the grid with Audible. If I have credits , I spend them , sometimes on books that I know little about. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel Can sometimes be the best way, you never know what treasures you may find. I tend to do that with library audiobooks. 5y
Librarybelle @ljuliel The Word Is Murder is the first in this series. Magpie Murders is a stand-alone mystery - a book within a book; quite clever! The House of Silk is one of his books featuring Sherlock Holmes - he was authorized by the Conan Doyle family to continue the Holmes tales. He has others, including another Holmes book and I think one featuring James Bond. I‘ve loved what I‘ve read by him! 5y
Librarybelle @LiteraryinLititz @Andrew65 I find his books not featuring other well known literary characters to be so different, so unique. I did like The House of Silk too! 5y
MamaGina I enjoy his books, especially liked 5y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle I enjoyed the James Bond book, not yet read 5y
Andrew65 @MamaGina Good to hear re Moriarty. 5y
Librarybelle @MamaGina @Andrew65 I‘ve yet to read Moriarty, and I haven‘t read his James Bond book yet, either. Good to know they are just as good! 5y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle I think unique sums it up well! 👍 5y
LiteraryinPA @ljuliel Magpie Murders was a stand-alone book. It was also my favorite of the 3 I‘ve read! So I recommend starting there. The Word Is Murder was the first book starring the author as a character to help solve mysteries. The Sentence is Death is a sequel to that. This author has a lot of different series with about 2-3 books in each, rather than one focal series with like 15 books like a Louise Penny. 5y

I didn‘t enjoy this one as much as Magpie Murders and I didn‘t love The Word is Murder. It gets a little unnecessarily slow in parts and I‘m still not 100% sold on the author as character theme. Maybe I‘m just not invested in the characters? I don‘t know. If the Hawthorne series continues to follow the established pattern, it might become too predictable or gimmicky, especially with the twists at the end. I doubt I‘ll continue on.

Book two in the Hawthorne Series; Anthony Horowitz resumes his role as ‘Watson‘ to Hawthornes ‘Holmes‘ - who could have bludgeoned the rich divorce lawyer, Richard Pryce, with a £400 bottle of wine? Will Anthony ever publish his books about Hawthorne and will Hawthorne ever stop calling him Tony?

As the second book in the series, I expected to learn more about the ideosyncrasies of Hawthorne. Why he is the way he is, instead I was left with more questions and frustrated at the lack if character devolopment of one of the two main characters that carried over from The Word Was Murder. Anyway, at this point, I don't know that I'll even seek out the third one. Bummer.

I love Anthony Horowitz! At this point I know I‘m going to like whatever mystery he writes, and this was no exception. Like The Word Is Murder, this book featured the author himself as a sidekick character to an ex-detective out to solve a murder. He plays around with this role as the facts about himself, his other projects, his family members, etc are true but the crime is (presumably) completely fictional. This is a clever and enjoyable book!
