This was ok. Not as humourous as I remember of the other (few) books I‘ve read by Pratchett. I hate footnotes, though, and even more so in fiction, but Pratchett uses them. Luckily, there were not many in this book
Pratchett was not afraid to put the tough questions, the concept of corruption/fraud and the messy complexity of (functioning?) society in front of a younger audience. For the fellow vegans and the animal lovers: there are some rough spots. Maurice is a less sympathetic conman than Moist was in Going Postal, but he redeems himself marvelously. Malicia is a work in progress. The climax was action-packed, then moving, and the resolution was clever.
"...in fairy-tales, when someone dies... it's just a word."
For all that this is the first 'for young adults' Discworld book I've read, it's not pulling any punches.
Another standalone funny and really great Terry Pratchett novel that I enjoyed quite a lot. I've seen comments that it is really not a Discworld novel at all but The City Watch was mentioned so that is good enough for me to make it part of Discworld. A pick!
As a side note, when I submitted my November bookspin list I had Last Light on it but as soon as I started it I found out it was not my kinda read so replaced it with this one.

Hey #OokBookClub! Did you know that The Amazing Maurice was going to be a movie? I didn't either until just now. Maurice will be voiced by Hugh Laurie, which I think is perfect. Nobody does exasperation better! 😄
IMDB lists it as “in production“ so I'll bet this is coming out in 2022.

The trickster Amazing Maurice is a fit for a #musical character.

Thank you so much @Eggs and @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
It's been fun thinking about the characters in books I read 😊
The Discworld's version of the Pied Piper of Hamlin was unexpectedly creepy and at one point did bring a tear to my eye.
If you don‘t turn your life into a story, you just become a part of someone else‘s story.
RATS! They chased the dogs and bit the cats, they — But there was more to it than that.

A retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, mostly from the perspectives of a cat and the rats, all with Pratchett‘s witty humor and insights into human nature.
For being YA, I think this showcases Pratchett‘s talents beautifully. He uses rats (!) to show us what humanity & community & growth can mean. This one I hadn‘t read, and I was not expecting to get so damn emotional over a bunch of rats.
This is definitely going to be a reread. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Thinking about Maurice + thinking about Going Postal = catboy Moist

Didn't do my normal dumb posting for #OokBOokClub as I read this because I decided to read it in a day because it definitely takes place in just one day. It's good! I like the learning to be people part showing up in the book for kids - it can be a frustrating, tricky thing to learn and it'd be good to have some rats to be there with you for the process.
This book is an absolute blast. It‘s set in Discworld, but it‘s a much different view of Discworld than we usually get. This is another Pratchett favourite for me. This is pretty much Pratchett‘s take on the talking animals adventure story. He just does it way better because he‘s not trying to be cute, he‘s trying to tell a good story (and he does).
Not my favorite #discworld novel. At times I was even bored. However, the ending redeemed it. Maurice is, of course, my favorite 😻😻

I‘m starting this one a little late, but I‘m always holding myself back to make these last a month, so I‘m not too worried about it. This one sounds really fun, and I love that the review on the cover is Gaiman.

This is an excerpt from Terry Pratchett‘s Carnegie Medal acceptance speech that was included in my copy of the book.
I thought this part was worth sharing.
The educated rodents were great, as always Pratchett can tell us so much about the human condition, even when he‘s writing about amazing rodents instead of humans... but a girl who wants to make everything into a story from her books and a cat developing *gasp* feelings for others just pushed this one over the top for me. Hard to believe this was his first YA Discworld novels. He did a great job writing a story for both children & adults.
#OokBOokClub-ers, our Discworld adventure continues TODAY with #TheAmazingMauriceAndHisEducatedRodents!
Looking forward to our discussion next month!
Happy reading!

I'm telling you, it's a good thing none of our inside doors had locks on them when I was growing up, because this would have been an intensely effective method for punishing me 😳🤣

Just a friendly reminder that next month we'll be reading #AmazingMaurice! Dig out your books, put in your library holds, or place your orders! The next Discworld adventure continues on March 8th! Woohoo!
If anyone wants to be tagged/untagged for future posts please let me know! Happy to oblige!
Ooooh I'm looking forward to this. I love Terry Pratchett and this is a great read, let's hope this feature lives up to the book. @Jackal121 had your favourite too. Anyone else think they'll watch this?
I quite like this book but here, in late capitalism, I am perturbed by the ending and I don't know if I'm supposed to be or not.

I've been lacking inspiration for photo challenges for a while now, and I'm just being obvious here, but I had to chime in for this end of an era. Thanks for the many months of fun, chat, fattening up the TBR and reminding me of some great songs, Cindy. You're #Amazing

My fiancé asked me to pick out an #audiobook for our road trip this weekend, and of course I spent hours last night poking around my library‘s catalog and got paralyzed by choice ? I ended up checking out these two from #Hoopla: a stand-alone Discworld novel and a nonfiction history of a woman who made monsters for Hollywood movies. I‘m open to suggestions though!
Okay, so my husband recommended this ages ago. And I started the ebook but just couldn't get into it at the time. Now I've listened to the audio and it was such a fun read!
Stephen Briggs is an amazing narrator. I love all his Terry Pratchett audiobooks.
Finished my first amigurumi while on holiday in Croatia. Almost finished listening to Amazing Maurice. Such a fun book!
And if anyone has any suggestions for amigurumi websites or books, please recommend!
Oiling the wood for the balcony and listening to some Terry Pratchett. I don't know why but I didn't like the book to read, but as audio I really love it!
This one is classed as "YA" Discworld, which is a bit odd as it doesn't seem any more or less adult than Pratchett's usual stuff. It's great, anyway. Maurice is a cat, and together with his rat associates has been running the Pied Piper scam in various towns on the Discworld. We also get Malicia Grim, grandniece of the famous fairytale-writing Grim Sisters and excerpts from the adventures of Mr Bunnsy and his friends of Furry Bottom. Great.
Not my favourite Pratchett but still a lot of fun. A Discworld twist on the Pied Piper myth.
Finally treating myself to one of the last Discworld books I haven‘t read. #gnuterrypratchett
Another lovely Discworld read!
Found in the 7 year old‘s school.bag
Just started this gem tonight and absolutely love it so far! It's hilarious! I love Maurice (even though he's a little bit of a stinker) and all his 'educated' rats! Pratchett was truly a god among men! 🤗
That feel when you find an #inscribed Terry Pratchett for $5.39 at a #used bookstore in a small town in Illinois surrounded by cornfields. #signed
For a long time I avoided the YA Discworld books, why? Because I'm A CRAZY PERSON. I honestly believed Terry Pratchett's writing wouldn't translate into children's books, again CRAZY PERSON. I love the Tiffany Aching books and this is brilliant too. Silly, funny, wise, angry, darker than I expected and just hugely enjoyable
#Twilight isn‘t just the book series about sparkly vampires and a time of evening, it‘s also a move toward the end. #Quotsy #QuotsyMay18 #LitsyQuoteChallenge
