Under the Whispering Door
Under the Whispering Door | Tj Klune
115 posts | 57 read | 3 reading | 81 to read
Under the Whispering Door is a contemporary fantasy with TJ Klune's signature quirk and charm (PW) about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the ferryman he falls in love with When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead. Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village. On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo. Hugo is the tea shop's owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over. But Wallace isnt ready to abandon the life he barely lived. With Hugos help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed in life. When the Manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days. By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune's signature warmth, humor, and extraordinary empathy. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The first time you share tea, you are a stranger. The second time you share tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share tea, you become family. What if, after death, you really weren‘t done learning lessons and you were never done loving. This is a heartwarming read with enough reality to make the fantasy part enjoyable. It makes one wonder: what ARE your beliefs with what comes after?

tracey38 Loved this book. Sure makes you think. 2d

Next up! Another one that isn‘t a normal genre but 🤔- I think I like most reads 🤷‍♀️. Wallace has suddenly died and claims he‘s too busy to have done so. He‘s finding all sorts of weird stuff that accompanies being dead and…well. I must read further to know just “what”

When you share tea a third time, you‘re family
I loved this sweet book that really took its time. The way TJ writes you can barely tell. By taking its time you really get a sense of what it means to move on. To grow. In Wallace‘s case how to be a better person. You really felt his character development. He‘s also a bi disaster. Loved mythos of Death and The Door, how they embody moving on after death. Final chapters had me in tears. I feel at ease

Eeep! I forgot to post this yesterday!

🍁 This year I am especially thankful for T.J. Klune. His stories are so whimsical and heartfelt, and just feel like a bright light shining on a sometimes too dark world.

🍁 No, but I try to at least visualize all the things I'm grateful and thankful for every day!

ozma.of.oz I have loved everything I‘ve read by Klune! He might become an auto buy from me. Thank you for sharing! 2w

Tbh I did not like this book 📖 too much 😓. It was really slow, and I wish the main character would have stayed mean a bit longer. I also thought the shadow in the background is a crow and not a stag.

I just finished this book and had tears in the end! This is another beautiful book about finding yourself and family. I will now read anything TJ Kline write after this a his last one. Wallace is just not a nice man when he dies and a Reaper comes. He is delivered to this very strange tea house where he encounters a man who tells him he will help to cross him over. So much happens and it is funny and endearing. So much love for this! ❤

Once you get through the first 1/4 of this book, it‘s amazing. I laughed, I sobbed, overall would very much recommend. A lovely story of finding love and family in unexpected ways, and making the most of each day.

Even though I loved The Cerulian Sea a lot more, this is still an absolutely great and moving book. It just got a bit too cheesy too often for me 😅 But I like how Klune tells us, that it's never to late to change - even in death. Another philosophical artwork written by a very talented author.

🍂I love them! I think it makes the story so much more intriguing when you can't trust the narrator! I still remember and savor the feeling of being totally blown away by the end of Gone Girl!

🍂 Honestly, I love all bookish items! Clothes, t-shirts, tote bags, pins, art prints - you name it! But I think my favorite is bookish jewelry! So I can show it off at work!

🍂 I can't stop talking about this book!

This was such a hilarious scene that had me cackling like crazy. I just might not be worried about death and passing if this guy may be there to greet me as the in between stop. The introduction (right after) was so sweet trying to explain to Wallace that he is indeed dead. No take back. Love this tea shop with its crazy exterior fashion and calm interior.

This book has all the charm, sincerity, wittiness and a little more gloom than Cerulean Sea. I absolutely love that my heart swells and aches, I want to shed tears for both joy and sadness.

This book is like A Christmas Carol meets Beetlejuice, but more pleasant. I got the exact experience I was hoping for. The audiobook was excellent with well defined character voices.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

LiteraryinLawrence Great review! I loved this one too, though I think Cerulean Sea is still my favorite. 3w
nichollinlove @LiteraryinLawrence I agree! Cerulean Sea is still my favorite of the two. I didn't want to take away from the worth of this book by saying that in the review 😅 I added more Klune to my holds list through the library. 3w

Bk6 of my recent #BookMail included this beautiful signed edition of Klunes new novel. Isn‘t it pretty? I love this colour in books, I think I have another ones with the same colour sprayed edges, The Butchers Hook I believe. This is supposed to be another sweet story on the same lines as the last one. Guess I should get around to reading that first!

I started this book without having read the synopsis, so everything came as a suprise. Although I didn't like how things ended and it also took me a while to get into the story, I really enjoyed it! It's a great way of looking at the "beyond" and the meaning of life. It could have done without the romance, but the character development was really nice, as were the relationships formed. This book felt as a comfort-read and made me feel good!

The promo tag for this book was “A Man Called Ove meets A Good Place” so how could I NOT read it? Amazing yet flawed characters, engaging story, authentic romance. I started feeling about 3/4 of the way through that there was no way the book could end “well” and started thinking of which not quite perfect outcomes I‘d be happy with. However, the ending actually ended up being a little too tidy and it didn‘t quite feel right.

I love these covers so much. Absolutely gorgeous!! The paper covers AND the inside covers. #TheHouseInTheCeruleanSea was an incredible story (favorite read of 2021) so I had to jump on this #Illumicrate special edition here. My bf (whom I got into the first) wants to buddy read this one too.
This is a story about living your life. Wallace gets a visit from a reaper and finds himself trying to live his life the week between. So He sets out to live

I picked up these two at the bookshop today. Been wanting to read the new TJ Klune because I adore Cerulean Sea. The Donna Tartt book is one I know a few students claim as one of their favourite books so I‘m intrigued to read it.

What can you learn about life after you‘ve died? Quite a lot, Wallace finds out when he meets the ferryman tasked with helping him cross over.

I think any story dealing with grief and loss is going to hit a little harder because of the past year. It was comforting to read about a man developing empathy and compassion, and rejoicing in it, when every day I‘m being faced with people I thought I knew being so callous about *all this.* 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

This book is like getting a hug from a friend while you‘re having a cathartic cry. Wallace is dead and through the guidance of Hugo and the rest of the residents of the tea shop, Wallace realizes the way he lived was not how he wants to be in the afterlife. His heart opens up, and through his transformation, the story explores not only grief but the release that can come by reflecting on one‘s life and changing for the better.

Book 126
I listened to Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. It's a fun, lighthearted but familiar-feeling story about the time between death and what comes after. A fantasy with a love story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
