X: A Kinsey Millhone Novel 24
X: A Kinsey Millhone Novel 24 | Sue Grafton
85 posts | 74 read | 17 to read
X is the thrilling twenty-fourth book in the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet series from the New York Times bestselling author, Sue Grafton. "In hindsight, I marvel at how clueless I was . . . What I ask myself even now is whether I should have picked up the truth any faster than I did, which is to say not fast enough . . ." When a glamorous red head wishes to locate the son she put up for adoption thirty-two years ago, it seems like an easy two hundred bucks for P. I. Kinsey Millhone. But when a cop tells her she was paid with marked bills, and Kinsey's client is nowhere to be found, it becomes apparent this mystery woman has something to hide. Riled, Kinsey won't stop until she's found out who fooled her and why. Meanwhile, the widow of the recently murdered P. I. - and Kinsey's old friend - Pete Wolinsky, needs help with her IRS audit. This seemingly innocuous task takes a treacherous turn when Kinsey finds a coded list amongst her friend's files. It soon leads her to an unhinged man with a catalogue of ruined lives left in his wake. And despite the devastation, there isn't a single conviction to his name. It seems this sociopath knows exactly how to cause chaos without leaving a trace. As Kinsey delves deeper into the investigation she quickly becomes the next target of this tormentor. But can Kinsey prove her case against him before she becomes the next victim?

Read this as my X book for the alphabet challenge. I haven‘t read any of the others in the series so my review might be colored by that.
The blurb mentioned that Kenzie, a PI, is on the case of a serial killer. That doesn‘t happen until the very end of the book. The first 90% is about possible art theft, light fraud, and her landlord‘s water usage. She also makes some questionable safety choices for someone who calls herself a hardened detective.

Kinsey Milhone is hired to track down a man (who turns out to be an art thief) and gets paid with bogus money. As she looks into Pete‘s old files, she sees he was working through a mystery on his free time and a new couple have moved into the house next door. All this keeps her running around for answers and puts her in danger. An enjoyable read/listen.

I‘ve listened to the entire Kinsey Millhone series this year. I enjoyed them more as the series went on. The tagged book is my favorite of these four but V is for Vengeance was a close second.

I‘ll have to find a new series now 😊

Ruthiella I‘ll be curious to see where you go next! There are so many detective series out there. 2y
Ericalambbrown @Ruthiella I‘ve found the first four books of Caroline Graham‘s Inspector Barnaby (Midsomer Murders) series. I think I‘m going to start those as reads rather than listens. 🙃 2y
Soscha I will never stop mourning we‘ll never be able to reach “Z”, the end of the Alphabet series. My mother, who I learned me love of mysteries from, passed about the same time as Sue Grafton. It still hurts, always will. 💔😢 2y
tpixie @Soscha hugs 🫂 it‘s hard, missing our moms. 2y
Ericalambbrown @Soscha I didn‘t realize there wasn‘t a Z until the dedication on the Y book sounded like she was saying goodbye. It broke my heart a little when I looked it up. Virtual hugs to you, my bookish friend. I‘m so sorry. These must be so bittersweet for you now. 🥺 2y

I wish I could be more original here, but here we are. Sue Grafton and I go way back. I was graduating college when A is for Alibi came out, and I read them as she wrote them faithfully right up to M. Then I just stopped, thinking I needed to let her get ahead of me by a few books. I haven‘t read one since. Maybe it‘s time to catch up!

I read this book to fulfill the letter “X” in a book challenge. I probably wouldn‘t have kept reading if it hadn‘t been for that. It was not poorly written. I‘m sure this author is a master, she‘s been at it long enough. I just found it very, very boring. Not at all my kind of book. Too many names were thrown in along the way. I lost track at times.

I decided to re-read this one for the ‘X‘ slot on my #LittensAtoZ list and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. In fact I‘m now contemplating re-reading the whole series next year. I like how in the last few books Grafton seems to be building up to a grand finale. We will never know the ending, but I bet it was a great one. I also loved the B plot in this one with the pushy neighbors. It made me laugh a few times knowing what was coming.

slategreyskies I‘ve never read any of these books. They do look good, though! 3y

TiredLibrarian I remember this series as being pretty groundbreaking when it came out: the single female PI wasn't common in 1982. As with any long series there are stronger and weaker entries, but I loved Kinsey. 3y
Bookwormjillk @TiredLibrarian yes I remember discovering those and the VI Warshawski series as a teenager at my local library in the 90‘s and my mind was blown. 3y
TiredLibrarian @Bookwormjillk Yes; VI Warshawski was the other big groundbreaker! Loved those too. Was SO disappointed in the movie!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

A nasty divorce, stolen artwork, a creepy stalker, & a pair of horrible new neighbors for Kinsey. This installment is full of the normal antics of Santa Teresa's favorite PI. The very different plot lines make it feel like a few books crammed into 1, but it was still enjoyable, especially as a break from the heavier things I've been reading. The villain in this one seems to have been inspired by real-life serial killer Harvey Glatman.

Second-to-last Kinsey Millhone story. If you like your female detectives to solve crimes with old school methods, she‘s your girl. She is a bit cranky, mostly introverted, and takes a morning jog only out of necessity. This time, she sticks her neck into a few places it doesn‘t really belong. Definitely better than the last two books, which were disappointing.

Gissy Wow but that is from a loooong series!😳Do you have to read it in order? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gissy I have read them in order. Very very slowly, since she was still writing them during this time. I think I‘ve listened to more on audio than read the books. My first was back in the early 1990s. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gissy If you were going to start them, I think it does make sense to read them in order. They all happen over a relatively short time (just a few years) in the late 1980s. 5y
Gissy @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you! I will start with the first one then to see how I like it. 5y

I intended to read this for my #letterX in last year‘s #litsyatoz but ended up with another book. Almost ditched again this year, but I really want to finish the series. Plus I love #Kinsey and her town.

IamIamIam I got up to letter J or K but my library doesn't have any more on audio! 😫 The narrator is perfect and, even though it's the same stories, they don't follow as easily for me in print! I miss Kinsey! Lol 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @IamIamIam I‘ve mostly listened to them also. But it‘s hard to get these more recent audios for free (library or Scribd). I grabbed this for $2 at a book sale. I‘ll just imagine Judy Kaye‘s voice in my head ... 5y

This is a mystery that I found on #cloudLibrary while trying to find an #X book for the #LitsyAtoZ challenge. There‘s a lot going on in it, but I still liked it. It seemed like Grafton was trying to jam pack this book with many things. We could‘ve definitely done without a moral takeaways summary at the end. I also found out that it‘s actually part of a series. It‘s Book 24 (it‘s an alphabetical title series), I may a look for the 1st book. 23/26

AlaMich The series is great, although if you are interested in reading more, I recommend starting at A. IMO, the earlier ones were better. 6y
TheBookAddict @AlaMich thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely be looking for it at our local library. I enjoy mysteries and want to know more about Kinsey. 🙂 6y

Too many story lines (a con artist, a sociopath, and new neighbours) means that none of them are given the depth they deserve. A good read but not great. Rating: 3 ⭐️

I enjoyed this book, although I was disappointed with the ending. At first, some of the side plots confused me as well (i.e. what does this have to do with the plot?) but upon reflection, I think it was Grafton's way of showing the day-to-day stuff of a PI instead of focusing on just one case. And for me, it makes Kinsey more relatable.

One of the few books in this series that ISN'T a reread! It was a Christmas gift but I had a bunch of other books in my stack, so I didn't get to it right away. Then I started my mission to declutter and didn't get to it. Then I decided to finish reading the books of this series I own so I could make progress in my decluttering. 😅 can't wait to dig into this!

Doing some late night reading and found this note penciled into my book. I usually hate when people write in library books, but I‘m imagining this powerful moment when this Sue Grafton fan heard this news, felt very sad, and decided just this once to be bold and break the rules and write in the damn book because this was an important moment to them. Books have a way of connecting people, and I feel like I just connected with this person‘s grief.

All the talk of drought was a bit depressing. I LOVE Henry but every time he talked about gray water and conservation, my eyes began to glaze. I'm a gardener and it made me sad, but that's just me. It did have a place in the story. I didn't like ending. It's not a cliffhanger but it lacks closure.

Read this, my first Sue Grafton, for #LitsyAtoZ and found it somewhat difficult to pay attention to. I liked the mysteries, but found there were a lot of extra details I could have done without...for example did we need to know Kinsey‘s routine every morning and how her jog went? I wouldn‘t bother reading another by this author. The picture is from an Xmas shopping trip...saw this sign and instantly wanted it!!! My husband was less amused. 🤨
