Imma be honest, I‘m a little more than traumatized and confuzzed about this one. Like it was good enough, but only like for a one off. Imma need some serious sugar sweet romance to get past this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a fun read… not especially deep, but fun! If you‘re a fan of 80s/90s slasher films, unreliable narrators, and fast-paced action, then this may be the book for you! I‘ll give it 3/5⭐️ It‘s on its way to @Alfrazier21 and should be there in a day or two. Sorry it took me so long to finish. Holidays, planning for midterms, general chaos! 😂 I‘ve received The Glass Hotel @Karisa and I‘m about to dive in to that tonight! #LMPBC #GroupV

This was a great follow up to a not so great book! Final girls left behind by mass murderers are a different breed & they band together to face one last threat to their safety. True Hendrix, this is beautifully written featuring incredible broken characters you can really get emotionally attached to!

This was a wild ride. What happens to the final girls when the movie ends? Well, here it is. I actually didn‘t like our narrator, but I think maybe we weren‘t supposed to? She was so damaged. But I loved the subversive jokes: the characters names corresponded to the actors who played the final girl in the real movie (ex: Adrienne‘s story is Friday the 13th, starring Adrienne King). It was fun figuring out which movie each girl was. (Cont…)

Lauranahe The twists were fun and very on point, and the chapter titles had me giggling the whole time. I‘ve seen all the movie referenced in the book; I love horror and I love slashers in particular. Not knowing if the narrator was reliable or not was…interesting. I definitely liked Horrorstor much more. 2mo
Lauranahe I also don‘t know how I feel about a man writing about feminist issues. 2mo
Reggie Sooooooooo I‘m with you kind of in a weird way…… have you ever seen a Pedro Almodovar movie? He‘s a Spanish movie director and there‘s some movies he‘s made that have nothing to do but spotlighting a woman‘s experience. In an interview he said he was raised by this big family of women and remembers fondly all the love that came from them. And you can see it in his movies. And I also think that‘s where Grady comes from because in some of his 👇🏼 2mo
See All 6 Comments
Reggie interviews on the Southern Book Club he talks about his mother in a very loving way which in a way I think he writes these books as a tribute to the strength of women and not so much a “look at me I‘m putting my hand down to bring women up” kind of way. And it‘s a phenomenon going on in horror where some of the best stories about female friendship are being written by men. For example-Paul Tremblay‘s Survivor Song. 2mo
Reggie But I‘m a guy so who knows what‘s real. lol but thanks for letting me throw it out there. 2mo
Lauranahe I think it was more the way it was written about. At times I felt like I was being lectured to, especially with how women are treated in horror films. But I‘m sure I‘m not the one Grady is trying to make a point to. And while I would agree that for a while violence to women drove the genre, I would argue that films/stories in general treat women like objects. 2mo

I will remember the unique premise of this book for a long time and the interspersement of article clippings was clever. I feel like maybe if I was the type to love horror movies a bit more I would have appreciated this book a little better (like I was missing some inside jokes). The humor made me just sad for the characters. Is it unfair for me to be irked when a male writer writes a book with almost entirely abused/tortured female characters?

AFrostCauseReads I definitely get what you mean about the male author writing about abused women. But I have come to trust this author based off three other books I‘ve read of his that all feature female POV. He writes women as characters, with strengths and weaknesses and desires. And for this book he took his time discussing sexist issues in the genera, and I think he did it well. And it‘s pretty tough to write about final girls without featuring abused women (edited) 2mo

Final girls are the people standing after the murders are done, the ones who fight back and win to save their own lives. Lynnette has never felt she fit in with the other final girls, but now she is the only one who sees the horror that is happening to them again. I loved this book. I mean I love everything Hendrix writes honestly, it's good writing, good stories, good characters. This one was full of murder but also full of hope at the same time!

I was unsure how I was going to like this because such blatant trauma in fiction can be difficult to read at times. But I binged this book; the ‘final girls‘ are so enjoyable in their own right (with how each manages their own realities of being final girls) and compelling and the twists keep coming throughout the book about the killer.

This was the king of page turner I needed to break me out of my reading slump. The main character was very interesting and I was hooked from page 1. I read this on my first gen old school kindle and I would not recommend as there are emails and written notes at the beginning of each chapter and the fonts were not visible to me. I am sure this would not be an issue on newer e readers.

BookDragonNotWorm I have a newer Kindle and have to change to the largest text size to even have a chance of squinting out what they said. A shame because I thought this book was awesome and would have loved to read every single word. 2mo

I almost skipped this one because I hate his previous work "Horrorstore". I'm so glad I gave this book a chance because I found it to be quite entertaining! Even though it is not all that scary, I did provide me with lots of laughs. One thing though. I feel like Hendrix could have been more descriptive of Heather's tragedy. He presents this severely messed up woman with little to no back story. Maybe it's one of his plot devices? ¯\_(ツ)_/

Perfect read to end Spooky Season with!! The author did a fantastic job fleshing out the "Final Girls", particularly Lynette. I found her paranoia and thought process completely appropriate and honestly relatable for trauma victims. The twists and turns kept me on my toes and intrigued! Now, did I figure out the culprit? Yes. But I watch way too much SVU and Criminal Minds lol. Did I guess their accomplice though?? No! So, points to the author!!

Just getting a little reading in with my cuddle buddy… #finalgirlssupportgroup Which Grady Hendrix book is your favourite?

Reggie It‘s a tie between My Best Friend‘s Exorcism, about the best kind of friendship between 2 girls, and We Sold Our Souls which I think demonstrates that Grady has his pulse of America and how we‘re all just trying to get by and it feels so hard sometimes. (Lol, tooooo deeeeep.) but it was really good. 3mo
LA_Mead @Reggie Yes I was thinking that it seemed very similar to My Best Friends Exorcism too. I think the discussion around how women who are survivors of violent acts are treated was kind of interesting… 3mo
Reggie Have you read his Guide to slaying vampires one? Cause there are a group of husbands I wanted to punch. I think in every book I‘ve read from him he has this reverence toward women and is trying to shine a light on the strength it takes to be a woman in our world. And then he throws in some monsters. I'm just going to say it. This book was over hyped. I wanted it to be awesome but it was okay. Hendrix usually does a better job of writing strong female characters. I thought Lynette was pathetic & made really stupid decisions. I mean, she made me understand why she wasn't a "real" final girl. It was entertaining but the unlikeliness of Lynette having just the right tools to MacGyver herself out of every implausible situation was annoying. ⭐⭐⭐

Although I was of the right age, I missed out on 80s slasher movies - reserving my entertainment in horror to haunted house films. But I had to go here because I can‘t miss out on Grady Hendrix and his campy hysterical fiction. I lost track of who was who and did something I seldom do (and for the 2nd time this month)- 1/3 in and I started over. I‘m so glad I did that!

Perfect read for spooky szn. A support group of final girls who are the sole survivors of mass murders start getting attacked one by one, who will be the final girl of the final girls? Or will they trust each other to get through it together? I liked learning about each girl‘s event, and the odes to classic slasher films while addressing the reality of violence against women that they portray. I truly didn‘t know who the killer was until the end.

I love grady hendrix, love classic slashers and loved this. The characters were tropy enough to be recognisable but still fresh and realistic, I didn‘t guess the twist, and there was genuinely nothing I‘d change about it.

Also refreshing to read a horror novel with what felt like a genuinely positive attitude to disability, recognising that many final girls would definitely be disabled after their injuries. As a disabled horror fan I loved that

Grady Hendrix can do no wrong, as far as I‘m concerned. I loved this audiobook so much. I grew up watching slasher movies (generally through my fingers with my hands over my eyes because I was a scaredy cat) and this was just a fun, gory, fast-paced joyride with a bunch of final girls that I really enjoyed matching up with their movies. Bonus: the audio is narrated by an original final girl, Adrienne King. Very cool!
