When I first read Hendrix, I thought he was a female author, he wrote females so well… and then there‘s this. Yikes. I don‘t know why ‘trauma‘ has to equate to selfish, annoying and spoiled, but I had zero sympathy for any of these characters. It‘s a trope I‘ve seen before, and hate. I should be able to empathize a little bit for characters that have gone through terrible events. Don‘t make me hate them. And the narrator? Yikes. All round bad.

Kimberlone This was my least favorite of his I‘ve read 1d
StellaDz @Kimberlone I was hearing that from a lot of people. After just finishing Horrotstor, this was a huge disappointment. 1d

I loved the premise of this - if all those slasher films were based on real events, what happened to the “final girl” who lived? But it was a bit over the top. My guess is that all the twists and turns were meant to mimic the films it was inspired by, but it just really made the story drag at times instead.

This was a great read. It had lots of twists and suspense. I‘m really glad I kept reading. I loves the writing style and the little articles and slasher film inserts between the chapters. They gave the book an extra layer and contributed to the story.

let me be frank: i did not like this book. it took around 200 pages to get interesting, and then it was pretty good but i would still never recommend it. the narrator is one of worst characters in book history which made this book even harder to read. don‘t read it

This book was absolutely crazy. I loved it!! Dark humor, gore, and slasher nostalgia. Fast-paced, read it very quickly. Loads of fun and I‘ll definitely read more by Grady Hendrix.

(Skip the audio for this one because it is awful. Read it with your eyes instead!)

I started this on audio and bailed before I made it to the one hour mark. The audio is awful, absolutely awful. Adrienne King (from Friday the 13th) narrates, which was probably a neat idea until it actually happened. Ms. King would be better suited narrating books for children.

I‘m reading the print copy from my library now and it‘s kinda crazy, but I‘m into it. I highly recommend avoiding the audio for this one 😳😖😬

vivastory I know this one is divisive, but I really liked it. I read the print version & thought it was clever. 3mo
IamIamIam I had to give up on the audio too. The narrator wasn't great. I did the same as @vivastory but couldn't get the narrator out of my head! Lol... it ended up reading really well! 3mo

⭐️ Holy hell, why did I finish this?! It was really stupid. Just a big ol‘ mess. Too many unrealistic characters, too much dialogue, not enough development. Not evocatively scary, just gore for shock value. I bailed on Southern Vampire whatever a while back, so it‘s 100% safe to say Hendrix is not for me.

KathyWheeler I like Hendrix and liked The Southern Book Club‘s Guide to Slaying Vampires, but I started this book when it first came out and haven‘t finished it yet. 4mo

I‘ve seen the reviews on this are pretty mixed. Still, I enjoyed My Best Friend‘s Exorcism and the premise of this is really enticing. Also I recently read Stephen Graham Jones‘ My Heart is a Chainsaw, also about final girls, so I‘m interested in comparing the two.

Didn't get as much reading as I wanted this month, which was disappointing. But that's okay
GENDER QUEER by Maia Kobabe: a wonderful and touching memoir about eir coming of age as a queer person
THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP by Grady Hendrix: this one almost lost me about halfway through but offered great commentary on violence, how we consume violence in entertainment, as well as trauma. ⬇️

Oldschool_millenial THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS by Stephen Graham Jones: this was my first time (in VERY long time) reading a Native American author. To condense my many thoughts: writing style took some getting used to, and even after that I had a hard time absorbing it. It was a page turner when it got to the climax, tho. It warrants a reread for the themes, but this book is also intense with its psychological horror, and its gore when it occurs; so need a break first. 5mo

None of the characters are likable. I want to hit Lynnette with her truck. Hendrix‘s take on the bury your gays trope is infuriating, especially since this was written in 2021. I didn‘t like Riley Sager‘s The Final Girls, but I will say his book was MUCH better than this one. Hendrix needs to stop writing women.

Book 22.

I'm every girl who's ever run from a man
with a weapon, every girl who ever ran
for her life across spaces where she was
supposed to be safe.”

I really enjoyed this book. It made me paranoid and anxious but in a good way. I already had an escape plan but “one is none” 😉😉

Book 19

I listened to The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix. The novel's set-up sounds more compelling than it is; survivors of violent attacks that meet for monthly group therapy sessions start dying. There are many false endings. Overall disappointing. ⭐⭐⭐

My first of Grady Hendrix. I loved the premise & I‘d definitely see the movie version if they make one. The pacing was a little slow at 1st & the narrator Lynnette was repetitive at times, but overall enjoyed this book. It‘s definitely more plot driven than character driven. I‘d read another from this author. I did go through it fairly quickly but it stalled at a couple of places throughout. I could‘ve done without the final twist/reveal.

So. Close. I wanted to like this, and I tried to finish it, but eventually I just ran outta patience. The plot sounded interesting and I liked the elements of 80s/90s scary movies and such… but bottom line is: I don‘t like Grady Hendrix. It‘s decided, I‘m not gonna try his books anymore, it‘s not for me.

Soubhiville I‘m with you, I just don‘t like his style. 8mo
