For the Wolf
For the Wolf | Hannah Whitten
The first daughter is for the Throne. The second daughter is for the Wolf. As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose - to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods. Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again. But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood - and her world - whole.

Ms Whitten‘s fairy tale is competently crafted but, in a word: overwrought. A bit too much unfulfilled sexual tension; a few two many familiar tropes, but at its foundation an okay story. The Wolf, Eammon has inherited the role of Wilderwood warden, keeping evil forces imprisoned. The 2nd regal Valleydan daughter is traditionally sent as a sacrifice to the wood. Redarys (Red) embraces her fate because she fears the wild magic within. 1st in series

Kimberlone I gave it a pick but agree with your criticisms! The political drama at the court involving the sister was my least favorite part of the book… 7d

A retelling of both Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast, we enter the world of a magical forest and the Wolf, a title given to the man/monster/God (no one is really sure) who lives within the woods.

Really enjoyed this - definitely uses very familiar tropes and set pieces but the characters are very engaging and the story is compelling. A solid dark fantasy with aspects of fairytale retelling. It is going to be a duology but the first ends satisfactorily; the core of the story is the relationship between two sisters and so it‘s basically one book for each sister. I will definitely be getting the second when it comes out.

Started slow, but eventually I was pulled into the story. Kind of a Red Riding Hood/Beauty and the Beast retelling mashup. I liked the build up of the romance and the fantastical elements mostly worked really well. The main thing I didn‘t enjoy was the interludes following the MC‘s sister back in the kingdom - way too much boring political/religious machinations. I will probably check out the sequel even though it continues with the sister‘s plot.

Asthecroweflies Same! The stuff with the sister drove me insane. 3mo

Small post binge this morning as I am a bit behind!!

I don't want to say a lot a lot about this one because it was an #LMPBC read, but I did overall enjoy it, although I did find the world-building a little uneven/slow, which meant that there were times that I was frustrated because I didn't really know what was going on. Still a pick overall, and I'll definitely read the sequel when it comes out.

TheAromaofBooks I am SO sorry I am late with this @HOTPock3tt but I will get it in the mail to you tomorrow!!! @Laughterhp @Chrissyreadit 3mo

Cinfhen Yay!!! Glad it worked for #Booked2022 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @Nessavamusic - There was a lot of potential here, but I felt like she chose to keep some things “hidden“ for too long - I also found it a bit unbelievable that The Wolf wouldn't tell Red what was going on much earlier, so it felt a little contrived. 3mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks I was really torn. I think this story concept could have been incredible but she needed a few more edits to tighten up and create more cohesion. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I'm really interested to read the second book when it comes out. With some of the world-building aspects already settled, maybe it will flow better? I just felt like she was trying too hard to be mysterious. 3mo

My #bookspinbingo board for February 2022.

I DNF'd the tagged book (yes, already)...It just wasn't cutting it. I need to quit adding fantasy to my tbr...because there isn't much that interests me lately. It's kind of weird it starts out feeling like a retelling of Red Riding Hood and then turns into a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

🎧 I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy this.

This book is similar to Beauty & the Beast down to meeting in the Wolf‘s library. Then there‘s Red in her red cloak heading into the woods as the second born to give her life to the Wolf so there‘s a it Little Red Riding Hood.

There‘s a legend. It‘s been a 100 years since the last second born was sacrificed to the Wolf.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 👇🏻

Twainy Red‘s spunky. (Her magic is a calling not a curse)

Amon‘s grouchy. (The Wolf who is actually a man)

The 5 kings Red‘s sacrifice is supposed to unleash are the monsters not the Wolf.

Red‘s twin sister is a queen too soon & disappears mysteriously.

If any of that interests you then you might enjoy this book.

My feelings are complicated- about this mashed up Beauty and the Beast with Little Red Riding Hood vibes retelling, but since this is an #lmpbc book no spoilers- until comments that will be hidden! If anyone else has read this and would chat with me I‘d be so appreciative! I can‘t wait to hear what my group thinks!!! These are my two absolute fairy tales- so really really want to chat about it!

Chrissyreadit So, I really liked the premise a lot- I thought it was original and interesting. But I felt like there were inconsistencies in the story and some tropes that were too juvenile for what the story could have been. I also wondered if I missed context without realizing it. 6mo

I thought this would be more Little Red Riding Hood but really is closer to a Beauty and the Beast rewrite. It's YA in the sense that it's a pretty mild and muted story and honestly a bit confusing at times but I think I like it enough that I'll listen to the second one, For the Throne, as well.

This was a pleasant surprise. A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood but spun on its head with magic, mystery and love woven into it. Red is more than just the girl who stumbles into trouble. She is the fierce woman who is driven by a soul deep purpose she doesn't quite understand but trust.

"The Wolf‘s story was one of mythic beasts, and as it was told through the centuries, he became one, too."

For some reason, I thought this was an adult dark fantasy, but it was neither adult nor very dark. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it were.

A cursed forest, crumbling estates, a Wolf, and a Second sister who is sacrificed, and whose twin is set to take over the kingdom. I loved this dark fantasy novel from the first page to the last! Red, our strong protagonist is sent to Wilderwood where she meets Eammon, the Wolf, whose job it is to protect the forest. Sparks fly immediately, with this slow-burn romance. This is the most riveting Red Riding Hood retelling I've ever read. The world building is rich and intricate, the heroine is fierce and independent, and the hero is wonderful.
Redarys is the Second Daughter. She has known her fate her entire life. She will be left in the woods- a sacrifice that will bring about the salvation of her people. The forest will swallow her- just as it has devoured all of the Second Daughters that came before her.

4.8⭐️I went into this book expecting a dark retelling of red Ridinghood; however, that‘s not what I got. That does not change the fact that I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. It‘s not a retelling, I wouldn‘t even necessarily classify it as a dark fantasy. But it was good, and I really loved it and am looking forward to book 2.

First off I love the cover. This was a folkloric merge of Beauty & The Beast and Little Red Ridding Hood where the second sister is sentenced to the forest and the wolf. There's nutty religious beliefs, crazy royals, blood magic, monsters, and natures deadly. It's good but can be a little hard to get into 🐺

Confession: I liked the Wilderwood and enjoyed that a sentient forest was a central element of the story. It powered Red, and Eammon. Neve‘s story was darker and her actions driven by grief. It‘ll be interesting to see what drives her in the sequel, For the Throne. Enjoyed this one. Went into it with no expectations or comparisons to Little Red Riding Hood. There‘s Red, there‘s a Wolf, and there are woods, but it‘s not the same.
