But after a while they stopped talking about her and discussed instead who was going to win the Grand National. For, as Mr. Ferguson was saying at that minute in Luxor, it is not the past that matters but the future.

#ScarathlonPhotoChallenge #Day3 #Death One of my favorite Dame Agatha‘s, I remember watching the movie adaptation with Mia Farrow & Peter Ustinov as Poirot when I was about 9yrs old. Absolutely fell in love with the story then, the conclusion is just so clever! #Scarathlon #SpookyGhostClub 6pts

A quick listen to kick off my spooky season reading. This was only my second Poirot mystery but I am beginning to understand his enduring popularity; I rather enjoy that fussy little Belgian.

Planning to watch the Branagh adaptation this evening. My hope is a nice little murder mystery movie night will help soothe the sting of this Bengals game I‘m watching.

LiteraryinPA I think David Suchet is the definitive Poirot but Branagh is fun too! 😋 1y

I enjoyed this immensely. I had an idea of what was going to happen pretty early on, but that didn't make me enjoy this any less. It was fun. David Suchet is a fantastic narrator, I especially loved his Poirot. I definitely need to read more Agatha Christie because I had forgotten how fun they are.

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read any Agatha Christie, and I‘d forgotten how tightly crafted her books are. It was fun to plunge back into the world of Hercule Poirot, although this time my mind saw and heard David Suchet. I need to read and reread more of these. Alas, no pictures of the Nile, the beach is the best I can do 😄

I raided our son and DIL‘s library again this weekend. As much as I love mysteries, I haven‘t read much Christie. Her work was featured in the Wondrium course, Secrets of Great Mystery and Suspense Fiction, that hubby and I just finished. I realized I need to read more of her novels. We watched the movie version of this last week, and I decided to start here.

A murder mystery in an exotic setting was just the kind of book that I needed right after having finished The Feminine Mystique.
At first, I had a hard time following the different strands because there were so many characters, and it wasn't easy to keep up with who was who exactly. Later on, when the murder finally happened, the pacing got quicker, and the twists held my interest. It didn't take away from the enjoyment factor that... ⬇️

eeclayton ... I had figured out who the culprit was before the big reveal scene.
What disappointed me was that, although this is Death on the Nile, the story could've taken place anywhere, really. There were some throwaway references to sights in Egypt, but that's about it, and I would've expected more local colour.
All in all, it was a solid story, not Christie's best, but a good read nonetheless.

I've been re-reading Christie's books and there were a lot of good ones this year.

Death on the Nile is my favorite. I love the central love triangle and how long Christie takes establishing the characters and the relationships before getting to the murder.

4. What did you think of Christie's portrayal of Egypt in the novel? Were you satisfied with the level of detail, or did you want more? Was her depiction of the country and its people enjoyable or difficult to read?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks Definitely the weak point in the story - it feels like this story could have taken place anywhere, as long as it was on a tour boat! I definitely could have used more Egyptian descriptions!! 2y
MrsK It was as much like a snowed in manor mystery with the boat stepping in for the manor. You know Egypt is out there, but you can‘t get to it. 2y
Emu I agree with the others. This could have taken place almost anywhere on a tour boat or a smaller cruise. 2y

3. Did you feel about the characters of Jackie, Linnet, and Simon? Did you have sympathy for any of them, or did you dislike them? How does Poirot view each of them?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I both disliked and had sympathy for them. Each was so narrow-minded in their own way, and so discontented. In some books, Poirot takes on that sort of fatherly/advise-giving aspect, and I actually loved his warning about letting evil in, because it will take over. I really felt like the pacing/character revelations in this one was really well done. 2y
MrsK I couldn‘t like any of them. Each had an objective which they would see fulfilled… no matter the cost to anyone else. 2y

2. Death on the Nile has been adapted for the screen many times. What do you think makes this book so attractive to directors and screenwriters over other Christie novels?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I think the closed-yet-exotic setting definitely lends itself to the film (although I've never watched any of those adaptations). This one also has a reasonable number of characters instead of 37 different villagers, so I think that helps! 😂 2y
MrsK I agree with the @TheAromaofBooks re: a closed setting. It heightens the tension which makes for a good movie. 2y

Ugh. #agathachristieclubR2 friends, I'm so sorry to be posting questions to this book weeks (months?) late. Without going into boring detail, the last couple of months have been downright bad for me, plus I finally got covid! So even though I had posts ready, my mind just wasn't here. But I miss y'all, so please forgive me, and we'll fit in what we can before my committee reading takes over in November.

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

Linsy I'm so sorry to hear that!!! We're just happy you're with us now :) I really enjoyed this book! Read it waaay early (last October), but remember being intrigued and surprised by how much I liked it! Still havent seen the new movie version yet though, and that was the reason I read it so early! 🤦‍♀️ 2y
SarahBookInterrupted I‘m so sorry about your hard time and the Covid. Take care of yourself. I read this one 2 years ago after the Orient Express and started reading a bunch of Hercule Poirot books. @Linsy I‘m looking forward to the movie as well. I watched the Orient Express after reading it. I thought it was pretty good. 2y

TheAromaofBooks Glad you are feeling better!! I also didn't get Covid until this year! Exciting times. I'm always excited to see the book discussion questions get posted, no matter how late they are haha

This is one of Christie's books that has grown on me over rereads. Initially I wasn't that impressed with it, but my most recent reread I quite enjoyed it.
2y
MrsK Glad you‘re better! DOTN has a lot of good misdirection, as well as some very subtle clues placed throughout allowing the reader to “investigate” along with Poirot. Really enjoyed this one. 2y
Emu Hope you‘re feeling better. I liked the book though it was a re-read and I started to remember the plot and who did it along the way 😁 2y

I enjoyed this one, despite the racism and convoluted solution and the fact that I figured out the mystery right away, which isn't usual for me. Although I guess I could say the first two about pretty much every Christie book I've read. David Suchet read this audiobook, and he did well, but I think I prefer Hugh Fraser. This got me through post-vacation laundry and post-move garage organization.

Ruthiella I prefer Hugh Fraser too! I think his accents are better. 2y
ImperfectCJ @Ruthiella Agreed. And I like his Poirot better than David Suchet 's. Although I think Suchet might have a little more variety in his voices for female characters, and his American accent might be a little better... Fraser's always amuses me a little. 2y

I almost made this a pick, but I‘m not sure I liked it enough. The pacing was sloooooow and I struggled to stay interested. Once the murder *finally* happened, I had it figured out early and that‘s always a little disappointing. Still, it was well written (if dated) and I enjoyed the little bits of humor.

This one I am on the fence about. It is somewhere between a So-so and a pick. The beginning was so slow. The murder doesn't take place until the halfway point. It was hard to get into the story. I stuck with it because it was a book for #LMPBC I didn't feel any remorse for the victim and most of characters I didn't care for. 3.5 ⭐

KristiAhlers That is actually one of my least favorite by her. And yet it‘s one of the most recognized titles she wrote. 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures I had such a hard time keeping the characters straight in this one. 3y
