The I-5 Killer | Ann Rule
post image
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Randomly snagged this in an Audible sale a few months ago. I‘d never heard of the I-5 Killer, but damn, this guy was a total lunatic. How he was ultimately detained in the time before DNA testing was a thing is pretty incredible. Ann Rule is the true crime queen. I need to read more of her.

CSeydel Oh, I‘ve read a little bit about this guy, if it‘s who I‘m thinking of - the one who preyed on the Marines at Camp Pendleton? Utterly horrible 4w
britt_brooke @CSeydel Different guy, but that sounds awful, too. This guy robbed, raped, and murdered women along the I-5 corridor back in the early 80s. (edited) 4w
CSeydel Yikes 4w

I impulse bought this from Daedalus (why are the books so cheap?) because it was less than $5. This paperback edition has a handful of copy errors but those don‘t distract from the grisly tale of Victorian era murder. It‘s an unbelievable true gothic mystery: a lady‘s decomposed body is found in a family cellar. The author nicely contextualizes the rapid social, technological, political and economic changes of late 19th century England. 🦴

1. Um. The Bobbsey Twins. Those kids were master detectives and I LOVED them when I was a kid.
2. The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew
3. Titus Crown from the tagged book.

Feel free to play!

dabbe How could I forget the Bobbsey Twins? I need more choices. You know, ND is a fave, and yet I've never read a Hardy Boys (Matt loved those). And #3 is #stacked. Thanks for playing! ❤️💜🩷 2mo

I managed to read only two books off of the generous #AuldLangSpine list from @vivastory - the tagged and Call for the Dead - however, this anthology is my fav read this month and I wouldn‘t be surprised if it pops up on my best-of-2024… The stories are all great, but I really knew I was in love when I finished the stories in the retail cycle; the way it went from zombie story to end with making connections in the modern world was breathtaking.

Larkken …but I am partway through a third (or maybe more like 2.5th? I am currently reading the actual George Smiley novel on your list, haha) and am anxiously awaiting another that I put on library hold as soon as I read the list (The Art Thief)! 2mo

vivastory I'm happy to see that you liked this one so much! After Friday Black & Chain Gang etc, I will def be reading anything that Adjeni-Brenyah releases. I will be curious on your thoughts on the Smiley book. That is one that has really stuck with me since finishing. It has a lot to say about the ethics of government agencies. Art Thief is such a wild book, I listened to it & that worked well. It was like listening to a really bizarre podcast. 2mo

Migrations: A Novel | Charlotte McConaghy
post image
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Set in a near future with rapid animal extinction, Franny casts off with a commercial fishing crew to follow a specific bird on likely its last migration. Where there are fish, there are birds, and vice versa. For a bit, this felt like two stories slapped together until we are fully aware of the circumstances. Such a gut punch. One of the absolute best, most emotional, endings I‘ve experienced in some time. #bookclub

I can not begin to tell you how good this book is. Amy Jeffs offers a retelling of early medieval tales (British), then examines the history behind them. I'm fascinated.
The first story is The Lament of Hos, which is her version of The Wife's Lament. The image is a recent translation by George Young.

Murder While You Work | Susan Scarlett

Pickpick

Fare thee well, Mr. Jones, fare thee well! The title is a clue that murder is part of the plot, yet I was not prepared for the level of menace this book had. 😆

Spunky young Judy goes to work in a munitions factory as part of the war effort. She‘s billeted outside of town with Mrs. Former, her daughter Miss Rose and granddaughter by marriage, Clara. But something‘s not quite right, not the least of which is Clara‘s creepy little boy, Desmond.

Tamra Menace! 👹 Fabulous pics! (edited) 3mo

batsy Great collage 😆 I'm still in the early stages of the book but have passed the chicken carcase episode and feeling greatly perturbed about it 🍗 and am also deeply protective of Mr. Jones! 3mo

batsy Oh my god, things escalated so fast! Mr Jones, noooo 😭 3mo
Ruthiella @batsy I know. That hit me hard too. Was not expecting this from the author of Babbacombe‘s and Clothes Pegs! 😭 3mo
rubyslippersreads This is fabulous! Isn‘t that actress on the right Gloria Stuart? (Old Rose from Titanic.) Also, Clara deserves the worst possible punishment just for what she did to Mr. Jones. 😭 (edited) 3mo
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads It could be Gloria Stuart?!?! I just googled scary black and white movies. 😆 Yes to the punishment. We don‘t know exactly what happens, but surely being separated from Desmond will be enough to put her over the edge! 😠 3mo
Aimeesue Excellent collage! 3mo

I loved this! A YA biography, at times stretching the line into historical fiction, told in free verse, printed over full page black and white watercolor illustrations. It‘s moody, evocative, and emotional. It does a great job of capturing the often overlooked fact that the woman who wrote the masterpiece we still regard was the same age as the target audience for this book, and shows what her life was and where that masterpiece originated .

Kenyazero Wow! This book sounds like it has a lot to offer! 😮 3mo
