Mysteries of Udolpho | Ann Ward Radcliffe

Bookwormjillk So is Macaroni the bad guy or is V? Or is the aunt just playing them all? Will Emily ever stop crying and find out?? #WeWillHaveAnAnswerLateNextMonth 1w
See All 18 Comments
AllDebooks What just happened? 😱 1w
AllDebooks @BarkingMadRead the u-turns from this aunt are making my head spin! 1w
BarkingMadRead @AllDebooks she‘s exhausting! 1w
mcctrish @AllDebooks I‘ve got whiplash 1w
mcctrish Sigh. Sob. You must go. Wait, listen to this. Sigh. Sob. Don‘t ever forget me. You must forget me. Sigh. Sob. #putafeatherinhishatandcallhimmacaroni 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely saw Marconi forbidding the marriage coming! There is a lot of sighing and fainting in this chapter. There is no way I would be slogging through this book without the #hashtagbrigade! I *will* learn what Catherine Morland gets so excited about! (edited) 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I just realized I got his name wrong in a completely different way 😂 Montoni! 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Also! Doesn‘t Valancourt have a first name? He calls Emily by her name all the time but she doesn‘t use his name in dialogue. Did Radcliffe just not feel like coming up with a first name? 1w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think they‘ve mentioned a first name? I‘m not sure! 1w
dabbe This is the perfect kind of book for me right now. No matter how bad things are or seem to be today, I am quite grateful to not be Emily in the late 1500's with absolutely no money and no say in what she can/can't do in her life. #yikes #andyesshecrieswaytoomuch #scmb 1w
TheAromaofBooks The aunt being like “suck it up or people will judge you for not being able to get over your completely inappropriate boyfriend“ like 48 hours ago you were totally on his team?!?! Geezy 7d
AnishaInkspill yeah the uncle 7d
Bklover And now they‘re both crying. And dear obedient Emily will now be ordered around by Macaroni. 7d

Bookwormjillk So much going on in this chapter! Bram keeps it moving! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I made a connection on this read that Lucy‘s strange attacks start out specifically on the grave of a suicide. I don‘t know exactly what that would have meant to the CoE of the time, but from their comments earlier it‘s obviously a particularly bad place to be. 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk he sure does! So Renfeld has escaped, his dr is Lucy‘s betrothed? She‘s now addicted to vampire bites, Keanu is checked into the same hospital as Renfeld? Or sent to recover farther afield? Dracula‘s house is beside the hospital where Renfeld is hence the escape #themasterhascometohim #somuchbiting 1mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly I was just looking up vampire lore and came across other ways to become a vampire excluding being bitten by one, and suicide is on the list. (edited) 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin Interesting! I didn‘t realize there were other ways besides being bitten. 1mo

Bookwormjillk Jan is always being told she needs permission from the ladies in her life. Danny says she needs to ask to go into Rebecca‘s room. Bea says she must tell her the minute she‘s pregnant. Blah. 7mo
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Agree. But if she were to assert herself, they would back down. She‘s always assuming and never asserting. 7mo
Roary47 My heart broke a little for Jan here. How tough to be meeting an influential matriarch in your husband‘s family. Then be told “what did you do to Rebecca, I liked Rebecca, where is Rebecca?” 💔 (edited) 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I‘m amazed at how many people are willing to say more or less the same thing to her! 7mo
TheAromaofBooks We are caretaking my grandma right now and I really related with a lot of Jan's thoughts in this chapter, about how strange it is when someone gets old, and wondering what they were really like when they were young and vibrant. 7mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Those passages really resonated with me as well. 7mo
julieclair I had a sick feeling in my stomach from the moment the grandmother seemed delighted that Jan had come to visit. I was worried she was thinking Jan was Rebecca. 💔 And poor Jan, she did nothing wrong, but her very presence caused the frail old lady major distress. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Can't believe I forgot to mention my favorite line - “I had an uneasy feeling we might be asked to spend the approaching Christmas with Beatrice. Perhaps I could have influenza.“ 😂 7mo

mcctrish Absolutely the point in the night where if I was Nikolay Parfenovich I would be losing my shit, one minute groaning as Mitya went down another doublespeak rabbit hole and then laughing maniacally as Mitya indicted himself but always with the swears #whattheactualfuckmitya #yankinghischain #yankingourchains perfect meme for this chapter 9mo

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I was leaning towards a My Cousin Vinny meme for a bit, but then they started on the money and I got a little too excited about Jerry Maguire 🤣🤣🤣 9mo
Cuilin #WhereisMityasLawyer, Mitya doesn‘t know the phrase “no comment”. 9mo
CatLass007 A My Cousin Vinny meme would be so fun.🤩 9mo
Bookwormjillk I‘ve never seen My Cousin Vinny. Clearly I need to correct that. For the sake of literature. 9mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk You will not be disappointed! 🤩 9mo
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 I figure we have plenty of opportunities in future chapters 🤞🏻🤞🏻 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk omg I highly recommend it, it‘s hysterical! My whole family quotes it on the regular 🤣🤣 9mo

Morr_Books Well clearly Miss Lavish would not have fainted. 1y
eeclayton How lucky it is that what happened happened: now Miss L has something to write about! 1y
See All 10 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books #accurate @eeclayton hopefully she doesn‘t lose this one 🤣🤣🤣 1y
dabbe And it seems like Eager is eager to throw shade on Mr. Emerson and others while seeming to be concerned with manners and gentility; what a hypocrite! Lavish and Charlotte, too! Only Mr. Beebe and the Emersons seems truly to be good people. I take it we're going to Rome soon, or somehow we're going to meet the Vyses. #ahtheintrigueofitall 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Mr. Eager is the worst so far about implying a lot without saying anything at all! 1y
mcctrish #mreagerisreallymrawful let‘s go to Rome and meet all the Vyses 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 although a drive with Mr Beebe does sound delightful, maybe he could go to Rome too 1y
julieclair I can‘t wait to see who shows up in Rome! 🫣😂 1y

Bklover I‘m with @Bookwormjillk 😂 1y
Ruthiella Ooh, people like Miss Lavish still exist today! Pooh poohing guidebooks and claiming access to the “real” country. Also , thinking democracy means “civility to your inferiors”. 🙄 1y
Bklover Yep, they‘re still here @Ruthiella 😊🙄 1y
dabbe Our heroine is ready for an Italian adventure! If anyone's seen the 1985 movie, Julian Sands played George. His body was found last week on Mt. Baldy. #ripjulian 💙 1y
Morr_Books I was so excited for this chapter as Santa Croce is one of the places I always highly recommend visiting in Florence - second only to the Uffizi 1y
Morr_Books I am fascinated by the interactions between the characters so far. 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe awwwww I‘d heard about that, so sad! 1y
Bookwormjillk @dabbe oh wow I heard about that but didn‘t make the connection 1y
julieclair I will take the heathens over Miss Lavish any day! 1y
TheBookHippie I do so love a good heathen ….. @dabbe I saw that and he‘s been missing so long I‘m glad they found a body! 1y

Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell

TheAromaofBooks This chapter was a bit more of an emotional rollercoaster than I was expecting!!! 2y
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks it started off so chill, with the Captain and his faux pas, that I thought it was going to be funny. Ooops. 2y
See All 15 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead - Same! I was like, “oh, maybe Gaskell isn't as keen about knocking people off as she was in North & South“ - HA! #seriouslyshekillsoffeveryone #thereweresomanyfuneralsinN&S #wehavealreadyhadtwoinCranford 2y
Ruthiella I liked this balance of humor and then sh** gets real. You never know what will happen next. 2y
peanutnine @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I've not read any of Gaskell before so the sudden death was a big surprise so early on! Remind me not to get attached to anyone else just in case 😅 2y
Bookwormjillk I guess she told us yesterday that all men must die, but I didn‘t see that coming. Someone should warn this new guy. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - haha yes, the writing was on the wall, I just didn't realize it was so literal 😂 2y
mcctrish And here I thought the Captain would be the exception to the rule 🤣🤣 2y
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish same I assumed he would be the love interest 🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I was not expecting what happened in this chapter either!!! For several paragraphs I was convinced it was a misunderstanding and that the Captain had surely escaped the train 😅 I also thought the story would go on for much longer. Maybe this book will be more of a series of vignettes. We know so little about the narrator that I can‘t see her having an arc through the novel. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk Thankfully it sounds like the Gordons do not live in Cranford 😂 2y
rubyslippersreads @Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk The first thought I had about the Gordon‘s was to hope they wouldn‘t decide to settle in Cranford. 😆 2y

Ruthiella #thesepeoplesuck indeed! She is well shot of them! 😱 2y
Morr_Books I am sorry Agnes got fired, but I am glad she is getting out of there. Anyone else really disturbed by the boy's behavior? A bit of a psychopath... 2y
See All 13 Comments
Ruthiella @Morr_Books Very disturbed! And his mother‘s excuses. Awful. 2y
IndoorDame Yes! So disturbed! Do you think we‘ve seen the last of them? 2y
Bookwormjillk Run Agnes, run! 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I can‘t believe she got fired! She should have quit first!!! @IndoorDame We‘ve spent so much time with these horrible children, I fear Agnes will encounter them again… 2y
mcctrish I so so so wanted Agnes to just stand up for herself #burnsomebridges 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books I practically cheered! @IndoorDame I sure hope so!! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I‘m so afraid you‘re right, why spend so much time on people we will never see again? @mcctrish right? I mean, she‘s leaving, why not go out with a bang! 2y
AnnR This was a horribly disturbing chapter, first with the birds, then with the attitude of the “adults.“ I actually cheered then Agnes got fired; not that she deserved it in any way, shape or form. My thought was she was too responsible to quit & it was good she got out of that situation before something really horrible happened. No governess could help those kids, between the lack of discipline & constant interference of the parents. #firetheparents 2y
dabbe Agree with everyone! I'm afraid we're going to meet these horrible children as adults in some way. Such abominable people all around! Things have to get better for Agnes, don't they? Don't they? 🙏 2y
julieclair I feel so sorry for Agnes. But also for those horrible kids… they are being allowed to grow up into horrible adults. I do fear we have not seen the last of them. 2y
