11/22/63: A Novel
11/22/63: A Novel | Stephen King
ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTSRANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENTKENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED.WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen Kingwho has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writertakes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it. It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him awaya gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning's father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his lifelike Harry's, like America's in 1963turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsessionto prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake's new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there's Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Surprisingly I haven't been #creepedout yet by my first Stephen King! #newyearnewyou @Eggs

Marni This is your first Stephen King? This is a great book but definitely not the horror story most of his others are. Great choice! I recommend Misery if you haven‘t read any others. 2d
jenniferw88 @Marni yeah - I don't do horror - I can't watch The Matrix or Pan's Labyrinth as they're too scary! What's the level of scary in Misery? Also would I be able to cope with the Mr Mercedes trilogy? 2d
Marni I haven‘t read Misery since middle school so I honestly couldn‘t say. Just remember it was a page turner and definitely kept me on edge! So, not totally sure the scare level... Mr Mercedes for sure you could handle! 2d

ljuliel I‘ve not read Misery and not seen the movie. That being said, I‘ve HEARD a small piece of the movie, which was enough to turn my stomach. Yuk. Try Bag of Bones. It‘s not scary and is a bit like a ghost story. Not bad at all. 2d
jenniferw88 @ljuliel thank you - i like ghost stories so going to stack Bag of Bones 2d
ljuliel Some other good ones that don‘t have graphic stuff would be The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. Both very good books. 2d
Eggs King is the epitome of creepy 😳 2d
Cortg This was my 1st Stephen King book and I loved it! It's not scary or creepy but I loved the story and fell in love with his writing! I've read a few more of his books since this one. 2d

This one became a read some/listen some book after I got into it and didn‘t want to put it down. Fortunately it was available on Libby through my library collective. I am particularly glad I ended it listening during my chores today since Stephen King read the Author‘s Notes. His shouts out to Doris Kearns Goodwin, her husband Richard, and King‘s son Joe Hill we‘re particularly fun to hear him read. 😊 So glad I picked this one up! 📚

I'm surprisingly enjoying my first Stephen King - it's not too scary at the moment & even though it's the first I've read by him, even I can recognise the mention of Pennywise - think I might use this book for my #literary square on my bingo card! #jennyis30

I‘m glad to be home (after a lovely evening) reading this wonderful book on Christmas Eve. Stephen King often gets credit for being a prolific writer but not enough for being a GREAT writer. This is a masterpiece, although at times I find myself thinking ‘well, now he‘s just showing off‘. 😂 Looks like I‘m going to end the year the way I started it — with a 5 ⭐️ read.

Was never a big reader until this book came along. The element of time travel, suspense and romance in this book makes it one of my all time favorites. The description of the time period makes you almost want to go back yourself and live in the 60s. A fantastic read, I just couldn‘t put the book down and finished it up in two days.

Yes, this is a Stephen King novel about time travel, the JFK assassination, and the butterfly effect. However, it also contains one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read. The romance between Jake and Sadie is pure, beautiful, one for the ages.
Admittedly, I don't read #romance novels. I'm the eye-roller, the one who dislikes all things smushy, but Jake and Sadie make my heart ache.

I‘m breaking through the lull experienced from about pages 300-500. It isn‘t necessarily the book‘s fault, things have been busy for me. I am hoping SK starts playing up some of the creepy features, like the yellow/orange/black card man.
Reminds me vaguely of some of his meandering pacing in books like Insomnia and Duma Key - both books I‘ve read and reread.

Finally finished on tonight‘s walk, and I think I just found my new favorite book!

What if you could go back in time and change something to make the future better? This is exactly what happens as it‘s a race against the clock to stop the assassination of the beloved JFK.

Even more than the sci-fi aspect of time travel, I appreciated the love story as much as the history aspect.

Really really excellent. Sci-fi meets historic fiction (and it's pretty light on the sci-fi aspect for the majority of the book), not the typical King at all, but, like most of his work, a real suck-you-in page-turner. Took me a while to get through this #chunkster but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
King talks about the research that went into it in the Afterword and man, what a project!
Highly recommend. Don't let the size scare you off!

(Disclaimer: listened to Audio) Not a typical King thriller, but a real mind game! This is a huge book (long listen) but well worth it! Weaving in real-world history with a bit of fiction and “what could‘ve been” really makes for an intriguing story. I found myself researching names and topics throughout, to learn more about what was true and what was King. And while the ending left me feeling a little disappointed, it is the “right” ending.
