The Vagina Monologues
The Vagina Monologues | Eve Ensler
"I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don't think about them. . . . So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to old women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them." So begins Eve Ensler's hilarious, eye-opening tour into the last frontier, the forbidden zone at the heart of every woman. Adapted from the award-winning one-woman show that's rocked audiences around the world, this groundbreaking book gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories, transforming the question mark hovering over the female anatomy into a permanent victory sign. With laughter and compassion, Ensler transports her audiences to a world we've never dared to know, guaranteeing that no one who reads The Vagina Monologues will ever look at a woman's body the same way again. From the Trade Paperback edition.

After interviewing hundreds of women from different backgrounds Ensler writes these monologues, poems, about their relationship with their body, with sex, with sexual violence. She wants us to use the word vagina,to stop feeling uncomfortable saying it,to stop the shame,to speak without fear,to share our experiences so we can heal,so we can fight systematic violence.According to WHO 1 in 3 women suffer physical or sexual violence, 1 in 3,remember them

3/5⭐ The vagina monologues and the author have done great things for bringing awareness to the issue of violence against AFAB people and for empowering people to talk about the things the patriarchy has decided shouldn't be discussed. However, the monologues reduce women's identities to vaginas and are trans-exclusive. They're an important but narrow-scoped part of feminist history. #buzzwordathon

I found The Vagina Monologues interesting on multiple levels: as cultural artifact, as feminist literature, as relatable content. My personal favourite of the monologues? I Was Twelve When My Mother Slapped Me, a composite account of first periods. Hilarious, and insightful! Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-vagina-monologues-eve-ensler/

I really enjoyed reading these short essays by women writing about their vaginas. The woman who have been raped and abused to the women experiencing pleasure for the first time and the women who don't have a relationship with their vaginas at all. There's an array for women here putting their vulnerabilities on page.

I'll high five anyone who puts themselves out there, these women get five stars from me.

Reggie When I used to live in Las Cruces the university put a production of this on, on Valentine‘s Day and it was always amazing. Saw it twice. 2y

A 😳🤪 book

"The clitoris is pure in purpose. It is the only organ in the body designed purely for pleasure. The clitoris is simply a bundle of nerve: 8,000 nerve fibres to be precise. That's a higher concentration of nerve fibres than is found anywhere else in the body, including the fingertips, lips, and tongue, and it is twice...twice...twice the number in the penis. This is an eye opening read since I‘m Asian brought up conservatively. This book is based on real women‘s stories, their experiences and monologues compiled by the author. It‘s all about female empowerment and violence against women hence the V-day Movement! Finished this second book for #bookspin #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Shmemilina You should see it performed! My college used to put it on every year. Super transformative. 3y

Darklunarose @Kathrin it‘s amazing what has come from this series of monologues. We have come a long way from the word vagina being blacked out but still have a long way to go! 4y

I loved this book. Tiny, but so moving. Funny, sad. Empowering. We don‘t talk about our vaginas nearly enough, and we don‘t treat them as well as we should, either! I‘ll close with a quote from George R. Martin: There is only one god, and that‘s the one between a woman‘s legs.

post image

The heart is capable of sacrifice. So is the vagina. The heart is able to forgive and repair. It can change its shape to let us in. It can expand to let us out. So can the vagina. It can ache for us and stretch for us, die for us and bleed and bleed us into this difficult, wondrous world. So can the vagina. I was there in the room. I remember.

We forget the vagina, all of us

our lack of awe, our lack of wonder.

I had always perceived my vagina as an independent entity, spinning like a star in its own galaxy, eventually burning up on its own gaseous energy or exploding and splitting into thousands of other smaller vaginas, all of them spinning in their own galaxies.

This was a great quick read. As a survivor of purity culture, I found the first section very empowering and healing. The second section while tragic, was beautifully written and is a topic that thanks to #metoo is getting more light shown on it.

I‘ve had this on my bookshelf for over 10 years but it just never made its way up to the top of the pile until now. It wasn‘t exactly what I expected and I think the live show would probably be better. Some good stuff in here, which would definitely appeal to the die-hard feminists out there. But some of it was just....weird.

Ubookquitous I think it works better when you see or here the show... Some of the humor doesn't always work on the page 7y
RaimeyGallant It didn't blow my mind, but I get how it was important when it came out. Now I just talk about my vagina all the time, and I probably wouldn't if this book hadn't started a movement. VAGINA VAGINA VAGINA! 7y

SpeculativeFemale @Sydsavvy I did "Because He Liked to Look at It" one year and part of "Remembering Their Faces" the next year. After we lost a cast member the first year, the director tried to get me to pick up the "O" girl, but I didn't feel like I could do the part justice. 7y
Sydsavvy It's about time we pick it up again. It just made us all feel so good. I can still remember the smile of the woman who did "Because He Liked to Look at It." Heck I still remember all of our smiles. Great great Hero choice! 7y
SpeculativeFemale I wish our local university still did the Monologues. They switched it to the newer show, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer, which I don't enjoy quite as much. 7y

I just reread this for the first time since college. It was really important to me then (reading, viewing, and performing). It didn't feel as powerful this time around and some parts really bothered me: it's not avoiding an "agenda" to have no monologues from trans people, and why can't she make a proper distinction between "vagina" and "vulva"? But it's still meaningful, the monologues themselves still wonderful, and I still love the word "cunt."

Broke_Girl_Reads Excellent review! I have complicated feelings about this one too and I think you broke them down very succinctly 8y

Finished today - current selection for #oursharedshelf

A thought-provoking, interesting, and (at times) hilarious series of monologues. Very eye-opening, as a person who grew up relatively comfortable with and unashamed of my female anatomy and physiology, to read some of these stories and understand that this is just not so for so many women. I'm very glad that this book was chosen for the group!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

#riotgrams #dedications

Sydsavvy It's a most awesome play, too. We did it a few years ago and women could pick it up and just cold read it and bring us to tears. We sold out every night, despite the folks who were afraid (small Texas town). We had to make the theatre put the Full play name on the marquee. "If you can't say Vagina, you can't come!" 8y

It's interesting that most of what I'd heard about this prior to reading was humorous. The point that came across that we'd all just been taking our vaginas too damn seriously and we'd be a great deal happier if we could be a bit more flip about them. That's actually not the story here. These are heartbreaking stories of many forms of abuse. The edition I read closed with stories of performing the play. A much needed uplifting juxtaposition.
