1546 is the sunset year of King Henry VIII's reign but he is still alive for now & his councillors are locked in a power struggle between the Catholic faction & the Protestant Reformers. Radicals are being burned at the stake & Queen Catherine Parr is teetering on the edge of disaster.

Shardlake is summoned by Lord Parr, uncle to the Queen & asked to take on one more investigation. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf A dangerous manuscript written by the Queen called 'Lamentation of a Sinner' has been stolen from the palace & if brought to the King's attention it could seal her fate. Shardlake's investigation leads him to look into the death of a printer known for heretical leanings. Was he about to print the Queen's stolen book? If he was, where is it now? 1d
OutsmartYourShelf The sixth & sadly penultimate book in this series sees Shardlake treading the very fine line between orthodoxy & heresy, the basis of which alters with the changing of King's mind. It must have been an extremely stressful time to live - not knowing if you will be arrested from one moment to the next for some perceived wrong. It's a long book (over 700 pages) but it didn't seem to drag at all & the interwoven plots were all very well done. 4🌟 1d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

lil1inblue Catherine Parr's story is truly fascinating. It is a bit tragic, because it seems like she was unable to say no to the king's proposal (and may have wanted to), and had to make the best of her plight. 2d
AnneCecilie I felt truly sorry for her. She seemed like one of the good ones. It also shows how little power a woman had, even the widow after a king. 2d
LiseWorks I was sad that she was betrayed by her last husband. It was probably vwey common for woman dying in child birth when being over 30 2d
See All 13 Comments
dabbe @lil1inblue I always wondered how she must have felt, KNOWING he had two previous wives' heads cut off! And what if she had said no; he probably would have had her in the Tower for treason as well. 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie So true! 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks He's the jerk that was in the books, too! Thomas Seymour: UGH! And he came on to Princess Elizabeth while married to Catherine while she was pregnant with his child! #douchebag 2d
dabbe I found Barak's story arc to be heartbreaking. Once a vibrant, street-smart ally, now he is left physically diminished. I hated seeing him relegated to a more minor role--Guy, too. And poor Shardlake! He ends the novel more isolated than ever. His unrequited love for Catherine Parr remains unresolved, his friendship with Guy Malton is strained further by working for Parr, and Barak‘s accident leaves him without his closest confidant, 2d
Deblovestoread I don‘t think she could‘ve have said no, nor did she probably sleep well at night wondering if she did anything wrong. And to have to be married to Henry at that time of his life…yuck! 2d
dabbe @Deblovestoread So disgustingly true! #majorickfactor 2d
OutsmartYourShelf Sorry if I‘ve mentioned it before, but there‘s a great nonfiction account of Catherine Parr‘s last marriage & subsequent death in ‘The Mysterious Death of Catherine Parr‘ by June Woolerton. 2d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf #stacked! And thanks for the rec! 😍 2d
Bookish_Thoughts I couldn‘t believe Barak‘s story arc. 😢 And poor Catherine Parr. I think Henry VIII was her third husband? She was widowed twice before marrying him. If I remember right. I can‘t imagine living knowing your survival depended on political winds. 😨 2d
dabbe @Bookish_Thoughts Yeah, we think we have it bad now with the state of affairs in this world, but man, not even being able to practice your own religion for fear of being hanged ... whoah! 😳 1d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

Karisimo It didn‘t feel too slow or bogged down to me! 2d
lil1inblue For me, it enhanced the reading experience. But I also love fantasy, which often involves a lot of world-building. I don't know about anyone else, but the last 25% of the book actually went quite quickly for me, because of how it unfolded! 2d
dabbe @Karisimo Same here. It took a while for the background to build, and I feel we truly got to see how long it takes to solve a mystery! But then, BAM! We all who've read it know exactly when things just went 😱, and then thos pages kept flipping! 2d
See All 9 Comments
AnneCecilie I love it, all the details makes the story and the time period come alive. Generally, we only learn how the life of the royals and the court is, but most people don‘t live like that. I love how we get to know the life of the commoner.l without it feeling like a history lesson (edited) 2d
LiseWorks I actually didn't think it was that long. I, too, read long fantasy books. I am a fan of this eranand am fascinated by the fact there was so much suffering. How in the world did these people survive? 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie Well said. I think that is one of Sansom's greatest strengths; he gives us meticulous details about the everyday life of all sorts of different people. Fascinating! 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks IKR? I am more than grateful we live in an improved society--for the most part. 2d
Bookish_Thoughts I don‘t think it was too long, but then I like chunksters. 🙂 Sometimes, though, all the detail immerses me a bit too much and I get overwhelmed. Burnings, for example. 2d
dabbe @Bookish_Thoughts Way too much detail there! And the poor dog, too. I'm still not over that one. 🤬 1d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

Karisimo Isabel getting so far with her accusations seemed like a bit of a stretch but it did serve to illustrate the fear of the times. 2d
lil1inblue I think it shows how the confusion and intrigue at court permeated all of society. Similar to how so many people in the US are just tense and edgy right now. 2d
dabbe @Karisimo Her kicking the poor dog and killing it ENRAGED me. 🤬 2d

dabbe @lil1inblue 🎯🩵🎯 2d
dabbe @Karisimo @lil1inblue The inheritance dispute mirrors the era‘s greed and familial betrayal, echoing the political backstabbing at court. It also underscores Shardlake‘s role as a resolver of conflicts in a morally ambiguous world. We need a Shardlake in our world right now. 2d
AnneCecilie I think they showed a lot of the themes in the book, and are probably some of the fictional figures I‘ll remember the most. Disagreements between siblings, especially when it comes to inheritance, as all to familiar. I can‘t believe she kicked that dog to death 2d
LiseWorks Their story was entertaining. Why they hated each other was something I wanted to know. And the real reason shocked me. 2d
Deblovestoread The sibling story was an interesting side story with a shocking ending. Isabel was horrible and I wanted to see her hang because of the dog. 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie IKR? I'm still not over it! 🤬 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks I did, too! It was a major reason I kept turning those pages! 2d
dabbe @Deblovestoread Amen! 🎯🩵🎯 2d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

Karisimo I enjoyed Elizabeth‘s introduction into the story! 2d
lil1inblue I thought it was so interesting that Lamentation of a Sinner was real, even if the theft was fictional. I also thought it was interesting that there really was a “plot“ to turn the king against her. And Anne Askew - a whole other rabbit hole! There was a lot in this one! 2d
dabbe @Karisimo @lil1inblue At over 600 pages, there was a TON to keep track of! I loved getting to have the inside view into Whitehall as well as knowing Catherine Parr a little better. I mean, she's fictional in that the story didn't happen, but Sansom showed quite a bit of who she was. She's my favorite of the six. 2d
See All 11 Comments
AnneCecilie I think the siblings. Showing how different views and remembrances can split a family. Still happening today. And the all to human feeling of revenge 2d
LiseWorks I thought I knew about Henry, but reading this book brought how much suffering that man endured in his life. Diet and a broken leg and doctors who knew nothing actually killed him. And the courage it took for Catherine Parr tonnage to spend her evenings with him. 2d
Deblovestoread I enjoyed having Catherine more fleshed out than what I knew before this book. Although disappointed in her next choice of husband. 2d
dabbe @AnneCecilie It was so difficult to see how vicious they were toward each other and basically to everyone they came in contact with. 2d
dabbe @LiseWorks To live with an abscess in your leg for YEARS! Wow! There are scholars who now believe that his immense pain and other sicknesses contributed to him being such a tyrant. That is one guy I would NEVER want to cross! 2d
dabbe @Deblovestoread OMG, Seymour was such an a-hole! Love truly must be blind sometimes. 2d
Bookish_Thoughts I‘ve looked up so much while reading these books, it‘s hard to pinpoint one thing. 🙂 I think Catherine Parr stands out. 2d

LiseWorks Oh my word. The King? I was shocked. I am so disappointed in Tamasin. It wasn't Shardlake fault. But losing a hand would be gard in this time. 3d
Karisimo I‘ve enjoyed every installment in this series- And I‘m not a big series reader, I prefer standalones!! I‘d be very hard-pressed to pick a favorite. 2d
lil1inblue Marking as a spoiler because I know not everyone will be caught up. OMG. The ending of this book! Poor Barak! I understand why Tamasin is so upset, but it's hard not to feel for Shardlake, too. AND THE KING?!?! So many games! My head was spinning after this one! 2d

dabbe @LiseWorks @Karisimo @lil1inblue The first time I read this was 10 years ago, and I had completely forgotten the ending. Then, reading it this time, when I came to that pivotal Henry moment, I was like “How the hell could I not have remembered this!“ OMG! A ripping-through-pages turner at the end! (edited) 2d
AnneCecilie I love all the books and just like you @dabbe I couldn‘t believe I had forgotten the ending when I came to it. I probably read it 10 yrs ago as well, but still, an ending like that should have been remembered. And that talk, really made it clear that for people in power, everyone else is just pieces on a chess board that can be moved and killed as they chooses. The commoners don‘t hold any value (edited) 2d
Deblovestoread My heart hurt for Barak and Tamasin. 2d
Bookish_Thoughts I can‘t get over how Sanson just keeps tightening the screws on his characters. I‘m sure things couldn‘t be worse than the previous book, and then I‘m proven wrong. Waaaayyy wrong. Yikes! I‘m leery of picking up the next book! 🤣 2d

#ShardlakeSeriesBR @dabbe
In book 6 of this series, Shardlake navigates the treacherous religious and political landscape of 1546, during the final days of King Henry VIII‘s reign. Tasked with recovering Queen Catherine Parr‘s stolen, heretical manuscript, Lamentation of a Sinner, Shardlake becomes entangled in court intrigue, murder, and sectarian violence. ⬇️

dabbe Sansom‘s meticulous research shines, vividly recreating Tudor London—from the stench of its streets to the opulence of Whitehall Palace. The novel captures the paranoia of an era where religious dissent could mean execution, and even the queen‘s life hangs in the balance.

I finished my reread of this book, and although I thoroughly enjoyed it, it‘s not one of my favorites of the series. Part of what keeps me invested in these stories is the dynamic between the characters, and I felt some of that was missing here. I did find the mysteries intriguing, and, as always, the depiction of Tudor England was fantastic.

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf I once thought being a Tudor queen like Elizabeth would be ok, until I learned that even monarchs had very little privacy. I need my alone time! I read a book this month about the history of privacy & how life was so much more communal in Medieval England. Even in Tudor times, anyone wanting privacy was thought of as having something to hide rather than just enjoying their own company. (edited) 1mo
lil1inblue And Henry had pursued her so relentlessly to begin with! Now she walks on eggshells for fear of losing his favor. H VIII really embodies everything I despise about the patriarchy. 1mo
AnneCecilie I feel sorry for the Queen. Even as a Queen she doesn‘t have much power, and never knowing what is going to happen to you. After all your husband have had several of his previous wives killed. And also the King is way older than her 1mo
See All 8 Comments
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf @lil1inblue @AnneCecilie I just can't imagine how she was able to get up everyday and live her life. To live in such turmoil for your life every ... single ... day. And she had to grovel before the king in the presence of Gardiner and Wriothesely--beyond horrific. Henry was beyond heinous. How dumb are we humans throughout history to give one man such power. Ugh! 😩 1mo
LiseWorks I can't believe how family with money manipulated everyone, including the king. We all blame Henry for what was done, but there were whispering in his ear at all times. You have to have an heir. You have to get rid of your wife. You must go to war. There is no money, so start taxing. On and on. Destroy the monastery. Kill so and so because he is declaring normal people can't read the Bible. 1mo

OutsmartYourShelf I would say those who constantly shift from one to another are worse as you would never know where you are with them. You couldn't trust them as they would throw you under the bus (horse & cart?) to save themselves & for political expediency. 1mo
lil1inblue I find them equally bad, but in different ways. I agree with @OutsmartYourShelf about those who shift with the wind. But those who are so unshakable in their faith that they can't open their minds to other ideas or views can be equally harmful. They deal in absolutes. 1mo

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

lil1inblue I thought I had a prediction about the Lamentation case, but everything got turned upside down after we learned of Anne Askew's papers. 🤣 And there's so many missing people! I really have no idea about those cases now. 1mo
lil1inblue The will dispute is so intriguing in a salacious way - I'm curious about the family history. And why is Isabel spying so much? I suspect there is more to this plotline than just the will dispute, but I'm not sure where it's going yet. 1mo
AnneCecilie I hope the siblings end up with nothing. There‘s probably more to the case, but any person that can kick an animal to death is just evil. Everything I thought I knew about Lamentation changed in a heartbeat when the Anne Askew‘s papers showed up. 1mo
See All 8 Comments
dabbe @lil1inblue @AnneCecilie I thought the same thing! When I found about Askew's missing papers, I was like what the hell? 😳 I do love how Sansom always has at least two separate cases that Shardlake is working on. Usually they end of entwined together in some way, but I wonder how the siblings' case can connect with the queen's. And that poor dog!!! Two dogs horrifically killed in these books. I still grieve over the spaniel in HEARTSTONE. 1mo
LiseWorks The brother and sister case really intrigued me. Why do they hate each other? And the dog. I wanted Shardlake to take him home. 😔 My goodness, why do you write books if you know it can put you in danger? What was the queen thinking? 1mo
dabbe @LiseWorks That's the magic question. I'd love to be able to ask her that! And the dog ... 😪 I'd like to kick Isabel hard enough to break a rib or two! 1mo
Deblovestoread I think the piece of Lamentation was a plant to throw everyone off the scent of who really has it. I like this part of the mystery. I am curious about the sibling mystery and why the sister seems so crazy and why the will was written the way it was. (edited) 1mo

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf I feel sad for poor Timothy. Can understand Shardlake wanting him to learn a trade but why can he not stay there & eventually become the house steward? At least Shardlake would be able to trust him.

Gurone Bertano was indeed a real person - a papal diplomat, although he seems to be more involved in the reign of Elizabeth. Wants England to return to Rome but what makes him the 'Antichrist' to reformers? A lot of others wanted to do the same.
1mo
lil1inblue After the last book, I didn't think I could loathe Richard Rich's character more. I was wrong. What a vile man he is! 1mo
lil1inblue I was intrigued by Jane Fool, and I'm curious if we'll see her again in the second half. 1mo

AnneCecilie I hope the Slanning siblings end up with nothing of their inheritance. Such evilness. Most of these people are trying to survive and the closer to the top, the harder it is and then you get people like Richie Rich (edited) 1mo
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Excellent point about Timothy. I want him to stay with Shardlake, too!

I wonder about Bertano, too. How could he have struck such fear in Elias? And the 'Antichrist' is rather a strong label to pin on him. I'm hoping we'll find out why in the 2nd half. And I can't believe I've read this before and can't remember! 🤣
1mo
dabbe @lil1inblue He truly is beyond despicable, isn't he? There isn't much positivity regarding him in the record books either! 1mo
dabbe @AnneCecilie Another part I can't believe I don't remember. They both have secrets about each other that will come out later; I just can't remember what they are! 🤣 1mo
dabbe @lil1inblue I think she is a lot wiser than she lets on. She seems cunning and sly to me behind her “fool“ishness. 1mo
LiseWorks I love Elizabeth. She is so smart here. Mary, well, the religious part is why she became truly evil when she became Queen. And what is it with the Fool? I think she knows a lot more than she lets on. 1mo
dabbe @LiseWorks I adore Elizabeth, too! At least how she's portrayed in these books. Mary--not at all. Jane? Something cunning about her. 1mo
Deblovestoread I do not trust Martin, think he is RR‘s spy. I think Matthew‘s instincts about Jane Fool not being simple are spot on. I, too, think Timothy should be allowed to stay. And totally agree about the siblings fighting over the house neither deserve it but I do want to know the back story. Also I don‘t like that Matthew having a crush on the queen is a thing. Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf An intriguing read so far. The uncertainty with the back & forth of Henry's religious changes leaves everyone caught between the two factions, & the fear of saying the wrong thing or being seen with the wrong person & being denounced & dragged off to the Tower must have been unbearable. 1mo
lil1inblue I like this one so far. It does have a different tone than the last books. Shardlake seems more somber and melancholy, while those around him are more settled and content. I agree with @OutsmartYourShelf - the uncertainty and volatility of the time must have been just awful. 1mo
AnneCecilie I‘m liking this one. It shows the times and how most people have reached a point where they‘re like “I believe as the King wants”. But I wish there was more Barak and Guy (edited) 1mo

dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf @lil1inblue @AnneCecilie So much political intrigue in this one! We actually get inside Whitehall and see the machinations of court. I agree with all of you re: feeling the torment and having to sway whichever way the king sways--it reminds me of how I feel in this country right now with a wannabe king creating as much turmoil as he can. At least we don't have the Tower ... yet. 1mo
LiseWorks This book shows how families went against each other just for power. This religious fight between the catholics and Protestants is so ridiculous. I know that God himself is gagging over this. 1mo
AnneCecilie I‘m in Europe so I don‘t feel it the same way as you do, but it is creating a lot of uncertainty 1mo
dabbe @LiseWorks My views tend to lean towards Shardlake's: I doubt all religions, so the Catholic-Protestant battle reeks of ridiculousness IMHO. 1mo
dabbe @AnneCecilie Most definitively. 1mo
Deblovestoread Definitely those in power swinging the religion cudgel. The terror of burning would be horrific so of course your words should hold the party line and if your actions do not you risk everything. I like the court machinations in this one. 1mo
dabbe @Deblovestoread It's fascinating, isn't it? 1mo

The last book of the Shardlake series and as full of the twists and turns that you'd expect. I love these characters, and Nicholas is a fine addition but I did wonder if Matthew will ever learn from past mistakes, it seems not.
This book sees Matthew return to the double crossings and manipulations of Henry VIII's Court, fraught with the ever shifting agendas, religious alliances, and Henry's ever changeable moods.
A fantastic end to the series.

My first completed book for #OutstandingOctober. 😃

This is the 6th and possibly penultimate book in the Shardlake series. Our Tudor era lawyer is once again drawn into political machinations when he is asked by Lord Parr to find a stolen manuscript on behalf of his niece, Queen Catherine. Hotheaded Nicholas Overton is a good addition as an apprentice lawyer. As usual, Shardlake doesn‘t know when to let sleeping dogs lie, which leads to danger.

Andrew65 I hope he will be writing more. Well done 👏👏👏 4y
Ruthiella @Andrew65 I hope too that his health allows him to continue writing. 4y
Andrew65 @Ruthiella 🤞🤞🤞 It is one of the best series set in that period. (edited) 4y
TiredLibrarian @Andrew65 @Ruthiella Is C. J.Sansom having health problems? I do love this series; so well done. 4y
Ruthiella @TiredLibrarian Apparently he was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago. I have read elsewhere he intended to take the series up to the Elizabethan era, so hopefully he will persevere and write more. 🤞 4y

Finnished my reading.
Love the history of the Tudor. A story full of intrigue and conspiracy. An excellent description of the glittering castle on the one side and the smell of death on the other. Such was life at the Tudor castle.

I weigh my holidays on the number of books read so this 700 page monster which as 6th in the wonderful shardlake series has been sat on my shelf for a while due to its size + guess what I finished it really quickly as i was totally thrown back into his tudor world. Here Catherine parr asks for the lawyers help to find a piece of writing on religion that could have her head. Brilliant research about the period adds to the joy of these books.

Crazeedi I do have to get back to this series! I think I'm on book 3 or 4 . This one looks good! 6y

Summer of 1546 and King Henry VIII is dying. The Queen's manuscript is missing and the King has not seen it yet and would consider it to be heresy. Matthew Shardlake is hired to help her find it. This is my favorite historical mystery series and should not be missed. Excellent plots and unique characters makes for a series that is truly a literary masterpiece.

I think we know surprisingly many things only one third into the book. I am not surprised that the burning is a main theme! A lot of beheadings ahead. What do you think Bealknap was talking about? Did you feel sorry for him? What did you think about the citizen‘s arrest? And what about the book? Why hasn‘t it been used? How many people will die in this book... @EadieB @Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian

EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I think Belknap knew Shardlake is in love with the queen and wanted to see what Henry would do about that! I think whoever took the book is waiting for an opportune time to show it to Henry. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads Books are dangerous! Readers are dangerous 😂 Women who write are dangerous! @EadieB @Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads This particular woman was very stupid. Fancy writing that. Very different side shown of Shardlake die to loving the Queen. Is she his Achilles heel? The Queen is making Shardlake risk all, but not just putting himself at risk. Guy seems to be on to what Shardlake is risking! @TiredLibrarian @EadieB 6y

Tove_Reads @EadieB ☹️ I placed a hold immediately when I realized there was a new one. I was number 21 then. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘m probably top of the list as I usually am with new books. Not too many people but a hold on new books. The hold list gets longer after the books come in. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Same here. Was the first one to get Becoming here, now there are a few thousand waiting. Somehow I missed the release of Tombland. I‘m getting sloppy! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Tombland is not published in US until January 29, 2019 so I should get it in February sometime. @Andrew65 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB That should work out perfectly then! I‘ll probably get mine in Feb/March. They have at least one new copy coming in. 6y
Andrew65 Looking at the number of holds for Tombland like to be late February / early March at least before I get it unless I go solo audiobook route. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 I‘ve now finished the book. Not going to say what, but boy be ready for this ending! Powerful !!!! You certainly won‘t forget it. I listened twice to those last few chapters. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y

Tove_Reads Didn‘t you feel sorry for Shardlake? Then again, I guess you know that it won‘t end well if you fall in love with the queen. @EadieB @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Falling in love with Queen was a big mistake. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB And who paid the price, Barak! 😱😥 @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I somehow always felt sorry for him. He suffers, no matter what. Sometimes he can blame himself, but mostly others. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I felt so sorry for Tamasin and especially for Barak! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Amazed he did that to such a central character. I wonder if originally he planned to end the series with the death of Henry. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m wondering how much further he going to go in the history. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Here‘s a comment from Sansom‘s FB page: Delighted to finish Tombland. I have waited a long time to write about little-known English peasant rebellions of 1549 in which more rebels killed than the 1381 Peasant‘s Revolt, and Kett‘s rebellion in Norfolk was the largest. Book long time in making because of lots of research and delays thru health problems. It‘s a murder mystery with ramifications in and out the rebel camp. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks for this. 😊 6y

So, how is everyone liking it? What about her book - Lamentation? Thoughts? Who took it and why? To create a scandal? To show it to the King? To gain something from her? Do you think the burning has a bigger meaning throughout the book?

EadieB @tove_reads @andrew65 I‘m liking it better than the last book. Catherine Parr is in trouble. Don‘t know who took her book but King Henry is not going to be happy! @TiredLibrarian (edited) 6y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Enjoying the book so far, halfway through Monday‘s section. It is always great quality writing, and as usual a bit of a slow burner in the book but C J Sansom always gives you plenty of time to get into the time period and the characters. Looks like Richard Rich is going to figure prominently again. A villain to love to hate. Shardlake and the Queen need to watch their back with him after the last book. @EadieB (edited) 6y

I was lent two of C.J.Sansom‘s books by my Uncle, Dissolution and Lamentation. These are of the same series, but have several books in between. However I didn‘t feel like this book lost anything with me not having read the others in the series. Events of importance were noted briefly in the main story, and was easy to follow despite having only met the main character previously.

This was a slow burner, but picked up quickly and was enjoyable!

Daisey I love this series, and the fact that the books can be read individually is one of the things I appreciate about it. 7y
Bookworm54 @Daisey exactly! I‘m sure they are even better in order, but it is nice to be able to just dip in and out of a series and still be able to follow and enjoy the story :) 7y

I am now up to date with the Shardlake series. Lamentation is set in the period of Henry VIII‘s, last days as his health fails and his paranoia reaches new heights. Shardlake is tasked by the Queen to recover “The Lamentations of a Sinner” a book she authored and which has been stolen and could change the balance between the radicals and conservatives. This story is good involving less successful detection and more historical palace politics

Dragon Sounds good, I'm still a bit behind in the series. 8y
