pick3.5/5. This wasn‘t the best, but it definitely gets to the heart of what being a high school student in the midst of friendship and relationship drama feels like, all while trying to avoid people in the halls. I could relate to a lot (a lot) of what Paul is feeing. I love a book that makes me feel nostalgic. This was a good one-sitting light read in between longer books.

pickThis book was a bit different from what I have read or listened to before. The audiobook had a cast that “played”/read each part, which was kind of cool. I loved how inclusive the characters in the story were. It dealt with the dramas of being a teenager & while the main character was a gay male, it wasn‘t the main point of the story, if that makes sense? It felt like it was a teenager dealing with life. 👨❤️👨👨❤️👨👨❤️👨👨❤️👨👨❤️👨
so-soI didn‘t love it. I didn't even really like it. Unfortunately for me the characters were flat and implausible and the plot nonexistent. A YA book that focuses on LGBT teens, I found it too cliche and out of touch with any reality I‘m familiar with. The story overall was to contrived, unrealistic and juvenile even for a YA novel.
panI just didn‘t like it. Maybe because I‘m not a teen? Maybe because I think that it was an unrealistic high school group? Maybe because it felt like random stories? Anyway. It just wasn‘t for me.
So listened to about an hour so far and don‘t really like it. Just seems like random stories. But maybe I need to give it some more time before I bail ...
so-soI liked it, but far from loved it. It was such an important story to exist in this world that I hesitate to say anything bad about it. Even so, there didn't seem to be much of a plot and IMHO there were too many characters and too few pages for their stories to get told effectively.

panI‘m sorry David Levithan, I usually like your books!!! This one was too eye rolly and ridiculous for even me. Essentially Paul lives in an inclusive utopia and then “falls in love” over the course of like -a week- and other shenanigans ensue. Props for lots of drag queens, and good narration, but this was too silly.
pickThis is held up as one of the great gay books of our lifetime. I must disagree. The character development is extremely weak except for one particular character which is a drag queen football player, who is barely used in this book. There's no twists or plots or anything other than a straight beginning to end book with no surprises. Plus gay life is not this simple. It paints too pretty of a picture of how we wish gay life to be, but it's just not.

Ok. I started this one on audio and so far I HATE it. As an LGBT YA romance, this is totally in my wheelhouse. I can't tell if I'm just not feeling the narrators or what. Did anyone else feel this way? Does it get better or should I bail?

Yes, I initially rolled my eyes at the progressive utopia Levithan created but as he stated in the author Q&A why CAN'T that society exist? Today's young people make me confident that it can. pickAnother wonderful Levithan story. Regardless of where you sit on the sexuality spectrum some issues bleed over. As a straight cis male being a teen seemed hard, I can't imagine how tough shit must get for those who don't share my box. If we all got to grow up in the world Levithan has created in this story, we'd be surrounded as adults by a more tolerant world. The book gets 4 pride flags. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

pickAnother sick day means a light-hearted read to fulfill the "LGBT+ romance" category of #ReadHarder2017. I loved this book, some have called it unrealistic, but I see it as a portrayal of a world we should aim for. Overall a fun read that left me smiling (and I don't even like romance novels!). The authors note at the end of this edition was also a lovely little extra.

pickI wanted to love this book. I love the idea of this book - YA queer fiction filled with happiness and ease where a quarterback can be the homecoming queen in a queer positive utopic town but it was a bit too schmaltzy for me. I almost couldn't get through it before I had to return it to the library. Conversely, I loved the author's chapter at the end of the book. His description of the reasons for the book and what it's meant to people was great!

bailedThis book and particularly the audio version was painful. The voices detracted so much from the story. At the same time the story seemed so bubblegum pop happy and perfect that was also painful. I've read others of his books and enjoyed them, this one was just too unbelievable for me.
