Wives and Daughters (Revised)
Wives and Daughters (Revised) | Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
117 posts | 76 read | 11 reading | 91 to read
Set in English society before the 1832 Reform Bill, Wives and Daughters centres on the story of youthful Molly Gibson, brought up from childhood by her father. When he remarries, a new step-sister enters Molly's quiet life - loveable, but worldly and troubling, Cynthia. The narrative traces the development of the two girls into womanhood within the gossiping and watchful society of Hollingford. Wives and Daughters is far more than a nostalgic evocation of village life; it offers an ironic critique of mid-Victorian society. 'No nineteenth-century novel contains a more devastating rejection than this of the Victorian male assumption of moral authority', writes Pam Morris in her introduction to this new edition, in which she explores the novel's main themes - the role of women, Darwinism and the concept of Englishness - and its literary and social context.

mcctrish I don‘t even know what to say other than Mr Gibson is right, Osborne needs to tell his dad everything and #notarealclare can stop her schemeing 6h
Ruthiella Osborn! “No one will give me a job” boo hoo. He COULD manage the estate he is going to inherit instead of try to sell his (probably not very good) poetry. 5h
See All 9 Comments
eeclayton @Ruthiella Agreed. He isn't even trying to get a job, he's just spending other people's money and feeling sorry for himself. 3h
Bklover @mcctrish I can hardly wait for the scene when #notarealclare finds out! 2h
mcctrish @Bklover the furies will be unleashed 2h
mcctrish @Ruthiella poor Osborne born too soon for a #gofundme 2h
willaful I'm wondering if #NotARealClare is encouraging Roger now because she thinks Osborne is going to die. And what if Osborne does die and his expected baby is a secret heir! Would explain why the book is so damn long. 😂 1h

mcctrish I am spiralling after this chapter - #notarealclare is soooooo obnoxious, Molly is so sweet, Roger is a dumbass, what is up with Cynthia?! My favourite quote is Osborne “I believe my movements are guided more by the lunar calendar than the floral” trying to shut #notarealclare down 1d
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish Ozzy seems to be the only one who knows what is going on. So weird. 1d
See All 9 Comments
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk he‘s one of the few that knows his back story 😆 1d
willaful I was a little confused by the section about “Mrs Gibson's cautious and quiet efforts to forward the catastrophe.“ Is she trying to get Osborne to compromise Cynthia so they have to get married? Truly that would be a catastrophe. 1d
BarkingMadRead @willaful I would not be surprised in the least #anythingforwedding 1d
ElizaMarie Another reminder that Rodger is not the Golden Boy Osborne. 1d
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful I think in this case “catastrophe” is more of a synonym of “climax” or “resolution” than “terrible thing.” But I‘m sure Mrs. Gaskell had both meanings in mind! 21h
julieclair @mcctrish “Spiraling” is the perfect word to describe how I‘m feeling after this chapter, too. 15h

mcctrish @peanutnine facts!!! I‘m ready to bludgeon the old fart!!! Osborne should bring the French catholic home sooner than later to finish him off 2d
ElizaMarie And the father being all - I was Hangry 2d
Bklover @mcctrish 😂😂😂Yes!! 2d
julieclair Osborne is not my favorite, but I give him some credit for trying to drum it into his father‘s head that the invitation really is for Roger, on Roger‘s own merit. 16h

Ruthiella What is this mystery about Mr. Preston? Also, I also love the Browning sisters! 3d
mcctrish I LOVE that everyone was aggrieved and defrauded by the late arrival hour and poor dress of the wealthy and the duchess. Preston and #notarealclare are the snobbiest, ill tempered social climbers anywhere 3d
See All 17 Comments
peanutnine I'm beginning to really like Lady Harriet, and how she "learned her lesson" from Molly. I love how her familiarity with Molly and the Browning sisters annoys #notarealclare so much 3d
willaful Oh man! I used to have paper dolls of the women in that picture! Dover published them.

I'm suspecting that #NotARealClare set her cap at Mr. Preston but he wanted Cynthia. 🤢 And he seems to have some power over them, so maybe he knows something damaging. Possibly he did something damaging. 😬
3d
eeclayton I read the fourth hashtag as “the tower screw appears“ 😂 3d
Bookwormjillk @eeclayton me too! That one took me a minute. 😂

It's always a good day when we get to the ball in one of these chapter a day reads.

Bklover I have to admit I rather enjoyed Clare getting snubbed! 4d

willaful Cynthia definitely has something of her mother's ruthless disregard for other people's feelings, though she did try to make up for it.

@Bklover Yes, some satisfaction. Wow, there aint no climber like a social climber 'cause a social climber don't stop!

Ruthiella Well, this explains the secrecy of it all…somewhat. 6d
dabbe Osborne is annoying me like a pebble in my shoe. I adore Roger and want him to like Molly, not Cynthia. The squire's an ass, though it was good to see him laugh over a smoke with Roger. 6d
See All 11 Comments
ElizaMarie @dabbe my thoughts exactly :) 6d
mcctrish Osborne has no money now so he might as well tell his father about Aimee and explain where all his money went. It would be cheaper to house Aimee at home. The Squire can then tell him why they basically advanced him the money they did ( cuz mama pushed for it) someone can slap Roger so he can see Molly and bring her home too 6d
rubyslippersreads I‘m disappointed the wife isn‘t a character we already know. Kind of like coming to the end of a mystery where the murderer is someone we‘ve never heard of. 😏 6d
willaful @rubyslippersreads Well, we do still have HOURS and HOURS of the book left. 😂

6d
TheAromaofBooks I honestly feel bad for the squire. While he may not be the brightest, I do think he genuinely loved his wife and feels completely lost without her. He's grieving so much and I think he's turning some of that grief into anger at Osborne - it's pretty natural to want a target when you're sad like that. But I do think Osborne is dumb for keeping this all a secret. How can things get worse by telling him?? 6d
Bklover @rubyslippersreads I agree!! I kind of thought they‘d surprise us! 6d
rubyslippersreads @willaful True, but this particular mystery has been solved. (Unless someone murders Aimee and Osborne remarries. 😂) (edited) 6d
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads I know! I thought it might have been Lady Harriet…because Rodger mentioned that name much earlier to Molly. 6d

Bklover @ElizaMarie Me too! I keep wondering if it‘s someone we‘ve already met. 7d
willaful @rubyslippersreads I didn't but you make a good point!

7d
willaful @mcctrish I'm not fond of Osborne but I don't think he was wrong about needing money to start a profession. Maybe he'll sell off his fancy clothes and redeem himself? He does seem to be trying.

@Bklover It would make so much sense for it to be Cynthia, but the text doesn't seem to support that. We shall see! I'm also dying to know.

Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie I don‘t think Cynthia likes Roger either. I think she just likes taking what Molly wants. 1w
willaful @Bookwormjillk I don't think I've seen enough of Cynthia to make that argument, though it won't surprise me if it turns out to be true. Cynthia seems pretty shrewd and it's hard to believe she has no idea Molly is developing feelings for Roger.

The omniscient narrator is generally very kind to Cynthia and I'm not sure if we're supposed to believe it or not.

Lcsmcat Any Keeping Up Appearances fans here? Because Hyacinth! 😂🤣😂 3w
Cuilin I‘m not sure I would want to get between Mr. Gibson and his cheese. Also, I‘m trying to be understanding of Hyacinth, as women in the 19th century if they were not ever so slightly manipulative, they could be coerced into anything. Clare-Dragonfly Some women are dripping with diamonds / Some women are dripping with pearls / Lucky me, lucky me, look at what I‘m dripping with / Little girls! (edited) 3w
eeclayton @ElizaMarie I agree that Mr G is rather late. It's weird that he tends to (both him and Mrs K actually) treat Molly like a little child but expect her to behave in a mature way. Also, Lydia Bennet had been married for over a year when she was Molly's age. Not that she'd be a good role model, I'm just comparing life stages. 3w
eeclayton @Cuilin manipulation is one thing, but what really bugs me is that she doesn't want to invite her own daughter to the wedding so that she can't outshine her. Just awful. And then there's the matter of the cheese!

willaful Yeah, dad definitely fell in my esteem. But I guess if he was perfect there wouldn't be a story, right? Assuming he's going to be a right numpty and marry NotClare.

I was reminded of the mom in Lark Rise. I guess discouraged intellectual curiosity was a common theme for women writers.

The prose was pretty amusing in this chapter. I liked the allusion to “echo answers.“

Well this was a chunky monkey of a book. I enjoyed it, though I don't think I liked any of the characters. Molly was incredibly annoying at the beginning but she grew as a person and on me as we went along. This is a very character driven read, the characters having so many flaws, but also Gaskell was able to keep my attention through all 700 pages. While the plot was spare the pce of the book is quick moving and engaging.

Here is what I came up with -
20 hours of audio of my #Doublespin Wives and Daughters
20 chapters of Clays Arc
20 chapters (finish it!) Of Trespasses
20 pages of Pattermaster

I am really trying to get caught up on some of my personal reading goals so these stretch goals should really help, and it is a 3 day weekend here!

During the first 30% of this book I didn‘t really think I‘d be able to enjoy it. I had almost had enough of fine ladies and ridiculous customs when all of a sudden I just got pulled in. Scales does an excellent job with the narration, even though I couldn‘t stand some of the mouth noises she made when imitating some (very annoying) characters. I do admire her skill though.

If you love Jane Austen, but you wouldn't mind characters who actually work for a living and occasionally mention politics, you will also love Elizabeth Gaskell. This satirical but warm hearted novel has wonderfully drawn, realistic, imperfect characters. It is a coming of age story about Molly Gibson, whose world is changed when her father remarries after years of being a widower. #pemberlittens

"Perhaps I might be a heroine still, but I shall never be a good woman, I know."
"Do you think it easier to be a heroine?"
"Yes, as far as one knows of heroines from history. I'm capable of a great jerk, an effort, and then a relaxation--but steady every-day goodness is beyond me."
Loving this book! Very different from Austen's writings in that Gaskell talks a lot about social issues. #pemberlittens

I really enjoyed this story. The cast of characters was well populated with people lovable (Molly) to slappable (Mrs Gibson 🙄) and everything in between. The writing is descriptive without feeling ornate, and really captures the characters‘ lives. This was my second Gaskell and I‘m looking forward to more.
