Getting to Know You
Getting to Know You: Stories | David Marusek
40 posts | 1 read
Not since William Gibson and Bruce Sterling galvanized science fiction in the 1980s has the emergence of a new writer been heralded with such acclaim as that attending David Marusek, whose brilliant first novel, Counting Heads, appeared to rave reviews in 2005. But Marusek did not come out of nowhere. Aficionados of the genre had already taken note of his groundbreaking short fiction: masterfully written, profoundly thought-out examinations of futures so real they seemed virtually inevitable. Now, in this collection of ten short stories, Maruseks fierce imagination and dazzling extrapolative gifts are on full display. Five of the stories, including the Sturgeon Award-winning The Wedding Album, a shattering look at the unintended human consequences of advanced technology, are set in the same future as Counting Heads. All ten showcase Maruseks talent for literate, provocative science fiction of the very highest order. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#WhenYouRead #GettingToKnowYou

📚 I stop anywhere when life interrupts or I am sleepy.
📚Read anytime, anywhere, but always in bed before I fall asleep at night.
📚 Cannot compete with TV. Quiet at night before sleep required! Generally Can hyper focus, then talk around me recedes to a murmur.(definitely related to growing up with 7 sibs & always sharing bedroom with 1 or 2 sisters, etc.) enjoy reading on porch to bird song.

Love this photo!

SilversReviews There were 8 kids in my family too. FUN....I prefer quiet. Thanks for playing. 1y

I like to stop at the end of a chapter or a break in the page/scene.
I will read any time and hate to be caught with time on my hands without a book.
I don‘t need quiet, but I get interrupted by people talking to me. My sister reads but her attention span is short and then she starts to talk. I guess I prefer to read alone. It must be the introvert in me! 🤣

2. How about least favorite since I read almost anything? Romance and really bad modern/contemporary fiction.

5. Not currently but I do want to adopt another cat.

6. No questions. Carry on.

huntersmom1977 Lol!! Great answers! Made me chuckle 2y
GarthRanzz @huntersmom1977 😊 Thank you. I‘m always told I can never give a straight answer. 2y
the-flashley I totally feel you on the state claiming. I hate telling people where I‘m from because I know a lot of them will instantly judge me for it. Our lawmakers have made some bad decisions in recent years. 😬 2y
See All 11 Comments
GarthRanzz @the-flashley Sounds similar to where I live. Except I get judged for being part of the predominant religious group of the state even though I‘m not. 2y
the-flashley Hmmm I‘m thinking Utah? My family and I visited Salt Lake City several years ago, sightseeing and everything, and afterwards received many, many visits from Mormons. They were super nice, but definitely didn‘t understand why we didn‘t want to convert (a random story for you, if you actually don‘t live in Utah 😅). I‘m from North Carolina, so I get all of the usual conservative, southern, baptist BS.🙄 2y
GarthRanzz @the-flashley No, you got it in one. 😊 Some of the nicest people but when you aren‘t part of the group it can get weird. Especially at work. But thankfully I work (when in the office) with people who don‘t put that part of their lives in your face. You‘d think people would understand we‘re not where we are from. We are a lot more. 😊 2y
GarthRanzz @the-flashley By the way. Thanks for answering the Litsy Happenings email! I was going to talk to you about it but by the time I got off work you had it taken care of. 👍 2y
the-flashley We can hope! But I totally understand how that could get weird. Lol 2y
GarthRanzz @the-flashley I understand how it is for you too. I‘ve lived in the Deep South, half the family being Southern Baptist. 2y
the-flashley I guess it‘s really kind of the same thing with religion. I‘m okay with whatever anyone believes in, I just don‘t like it when they assume I believe the same things they do or try to force their opinions on me, you know? And it seems like that‘s the only thing people around here know how to do. And then people from other parts of the country assume I‘m the same because I live here. But yeah, it‘s a lot of the same stuff just in different places.😅 2y
GarthRanzz You so pegged what it‘s like to live here! It‘s as you said, same stuff just in a different place 😊 (edited) 2y

2. Both? My job has turned me into an introvert in my personal life.
3. Cozy, thriller is too close to real life/job
4. Enemies- you know where you stand
5. Both!
6. Quidditch- is there any other choice really?
7. Either
8. Snow #unpopularopinion
9. Romance

Avanders I‘m in 💯 agreement on ❄️!! Also: no, quidditch is the only answer 😜. And.... you must be in law? Enforcement? I‘m also in law... I like thrillers, but in much smaller doses than I used to... 2y
BethM I love winter! Until you get to February/march and it seems like you'll never see the sun again 😂 @Avanders yup law enforcement! I'm a federal probation office and the stuff I see/hear/work on rehabilitating is so real and would make the general public pale at times that I need to escape it when I read. 2y
Avanders Intense! But I hear ya. My husband was a crimes against children DA for a while and... yeah. Real life is terrible!! I‘m an Atty for the state court of appeals, so I see a lot of the criminal stuff, but not at ground-level like you do! I can see why you don‘t do thrillers! As it is, I tend to stray toward sci-fi/fantasy for essentially the same reason! 2y
BethM @Avanders wow good for him. That's tough work. Really anything related to this field can be hard. Sci-fi/fantasy is the best! 2y
Avanders Agreed ☺️ Especially these days with all the not-too-distant future stuff ... I love those! 2y

tpixie When I was a preteen we went up to Ottawa and watched the changing of the guards- that was really cool. Those poor guards when they were standing around, I tried to make them laugh but they stood their ground. I'm sure they get sick of people doing that!! 2y

Jokila I was born in Milwaukee too 😊 2y
LauraBrook @AlaMich No way! Brady street and that whole East side area are 🍌👖at night. @thirstyreader I know! 💔💔💔@maich 👋🏼 @Jokila How funny! I was born at West Allis Memorial, and I love a couple of mikes from there now. It's strange how many Littens have WI connections! 2y
merelybookish Parks and Rec is one of my faves too! 2y
Aseleener You are still the closest Litten to me, that I know of anyway. I'm in Kenosha. My husband's on his way into MKE now to visit someone at St. Luke's. 2y
LauraBrook @merelybookish It's so great! Do you have a fave character / episode? @Aseleener I'm in West Allis, so we're pretty close! I think there's a Litten in Oak Creek maybe, and there are a couple near Madison too. I hope the patient at St Luke's is okay, and that your husband doesn't go too crazy with all of the crazy road construction around here. It's been 5 years, non-stop, and I have had it! 😡 Is there a bookstore in Kenosha? (edited) 2y
Aseleener Sadly, no. 😓 There was a used bookstore downtown but it closed recently. Agreed on the construction! 2y
Jokila Same hospital too! 😱 2y
mrsamandahood Parks and Rec! LOVE that show! And Golden Girls! I used to watch that with my grandma. Good memories! 2y
LauraBrook @Jokila Shut up - no way! I was born in 1978. If we're the same age, it'll be freaky awesome! 2y
Jokila Alas, no! I came late 😑 2y
LauraBrook @Jokila Bummer! Still crazy weird, though, right? Hope you're having a nice evening! 2y
