Mill on the Floss | George Eliot
146 posts | 113 read | 7 reading | 69 to read
In "The Mill on the Floss," George Eliot re-creates her own childhood through the story of the wild, gifted Maggie Tulliver and her spoiled, selfish brother. Though tragic in its outcome, this tenderly comic novel combines vivid vignettes of family life with a magnificent portrait of the heroine and an acute critique of Victorian sexual politics.Eliot had no peer when it came to finding the drama at the heart of normal lives lived in tandem with the gigantic rhythms of nature itself, and in "The Mill on the Floss" she shows us once again how thoroughly the art of fiction can satisfy our deepest mental and emotional cravings. Pickpick

A richly detailed and emotionally complex novel that explores themes of family, societal expectations, personal freedom, and the tension between individual desires and communal obligations. Eliot presents flawed characters with nuanced motivations, making their conflicts deeply human. ⬇️

dabbe However, so much time was spent developing the characters, town, and story, that I felt the ending to be almost too abrupt and melodramatic. And a major #wtf ending! 😱 While imperfect, it remains a moving and thought-provoking work. 4d

Mehso-so

Another classic off the list. I can't say I enjoyed this one. Maggie honestly got on my nerves. I was thinking about it while writing my GR review, because in some ways she reminded me of Helen from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but I really respected Helen and had pretty much no respect for Maggie, and I was trying to figure out why. I think it's because Maggie's brother is her god. Everything she does is based on whether or not he will approve. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Except he's a jackass, so the way she followed him around like an abused dog, ever-hoping for head-pats despite only ever receiving kicks was both depressing and irritating. I get that this was a different era and that Eliot was making a statement about the position of women at the time, but honestly you have to be stupid to worship Tom. I actually think that I wouldn't have minded Maggie's decisions if I ever remotely felt like she was ⬇ 5d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) making them for herself, or even (like Helen) due to a true religious conviction. But it all just came back to her obnoxious brother who actually couldn't care less about Maggie or what happened to her so.

Between this and Middlemarch, I've had enough of George Eliot to last me probably forever, but I genuinely appreciate @BarkingMadRead helping me plow through yet another classic I probably would have given up on my own! 😂
5d
eeclayton Couldn't agree more. I also have no idea what she saw in Stephen. He's a selfish and arrogant emotional blackmailer. 5d
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - I could at least see the whole young love thing where you meet someone and don't notice their negative qualities yet because you're caught up in the fizz, especially in Maggie's situation where she is so desperate for attention and affection. Like long-term if they got married it would have been terrible because he sucked, but her short-term infatuation kind of made sense. But to still think Tom is perfect after all these years...!!!! 5d
dabbe A 🎯🩵🎯 review. Stephen also reminded me of Heathcliff in WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Way too angsty and Byronic-heroey for my taste! 🤣 5d
Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking the same thing about having had enough of Eliot! Disappointing, because I think she was a really cool individual. (edited) 5d

TheAromaofBooks Thank you for guiding us through this one!! This is my second George Eliot book and I am here to say that it will also be my last 😂 What even was the point of this. 5d
dabbe The ending infuriated me. All the pages ... on and on ... such descriptions ... blah blah blah ... then BAM! Dead in one chapter. The end. #wtf? 😳 And what kind of marriage will Lucy and Stephen have. I'd always think that his true love was Maggie. What kind of marriage can come from that? At least MIDDLEMARCH had a happy ending! 5d
mcctrish @dabbe I am so mad!!! Maggie is smarter than her father, smarter than her brother, Philip is her intellectual match but he‘s a cripple so that‘s a no, Stephen is a lightweight and her cousin‘s choice so that‘s a no, let‘s kill her off cuz that‘s the fitting thing to do #knowyourplacegirls ENRAGED I am 5d
KAO Stunned! It actually crossed my mind that the author was tired of this story or didn‘t know how to end it—so, ta daa! A dangerous flood occurs to shut it all down with fatal consequences! The End. Argh! Ah well, thanks for leading us through this one, @BarkingMadRead! 5d
Ruthiella Thank you @BarkingMadRead for once again leading us through the breach! I likely would have not read this otherwise. I‘m glad to have it under my belt, even though it was a frustrating read at times. 5d
eeclayton Joining the #wtf club. It was interesting to realize that out of the 3 times we saw Maggie in a boat, the only time she was safe was when she was threatened by the flood, floating with no male companion in the vessel. But the I still don't understand why the siblings had to be killed off like this.
Thanks @barkingmadread for leading us through another difficult read that I would probably have given up on without our lovely group 💕

I‘m not sure if I love or hate the ending? Set in the mid 19th cent., this is the story of Maggie Tulliver who, were she a man, would have had the education and success she deserved. She‘s smarter than her father, who favors her, and her brother, who loves her but holds her back. Phillip is her intellectual equal. Stephan I think she‘d eventually tire of…

Amiable Excellent work! 🥳 6d

Ruthiella @mcctrish It so easily could have been that. There was space for it. 6d
eeclayton I also think Stephen would tire of her eventually, too. Once he got over the honeymoon phase, he'd may even start to blame her for lost opportunities and their situation in life. 5d
Ruthiella @eeclayton I wonder if that‘s the reason the ending is what it is…because none of the other options were good. 5d

mcctrish @zezeki it‘s a lot of blah blah blah setting the English pastoral scene with extended family on the mother‘s side who are judgey as hell. The father sues a lawyer which goes on FOREVER. He loses the case & loses his mind, the son holds a grudge like nobody‘s business, the daughter is head strong & loves to read, boys do stupid things in her presence, she pays the price everytime. I couldn‘t wait any longer. I had a long drive yesterday and my schedule the next few days is chaotic, so I finished the last few chapters. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I appreciated the discussion to note some details I would have otherwise missed. It was also an often frustrating read, and my heart hurt for Maggie in that it never seemed she had good options from which to choose.

AllDebooks This is grinding my gears now. Maggie should tell them all to feck off. She should ask Tom for a small allowance and get gone to a new life with found family and better friends. 7d
See All 7 Comments
dabbe It's hard to believe, but if only Maggie had gone through with the elopement with Stephen, she would have caused less damage, and Philip and Lucy would have eventually moved on with their lives. Now that Maggie is determined to stay in town, she is making it impossible for Stephen to have a possible reconciliation, either with herself or with Lucy. Moreover, her presence in town will keep the wound open in Philip's heart. 7d
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t love Philip telling her he would have committed suicide if he didn‘t love her so much. Keep that to yourself, my man. I‘m glad you had something to hold onto but don‘t make Maggie feel guilty. 7d

Leftcoastzen It is a frustrating chapter! Maggie left to get the scowls, side eye , etc . Hard times for a woman. She‘s trying to stay strong. 1w
TheAromaofBooks Like I get why Maggie doesn't want to start over, but at the same time - it feels like she always purposefully chooses the hardest possible path for no real reason. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Yes, very frustrating. Dr. Kenn seems to be a kind man. I hope he comes up with a solution that can satisfy Maggie‘s conscience without making the rest of her life miserable. 1w
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks it seems like she's internalised the criticism of the community and doesn't feel like she deserves a fresh start. Which is the saddest thing in this book. 1w

julieclair @eeclayton Yes, sadly. Poor Maggie. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Yay for Bob! Kind of mad at Maggie for saying she doesn‘t owe a grudge to anyone. Not that it would help if Bob went and beat up Stephen anyway. I wonder what is going on with Stephen. It sounds like Tom wants to duel him but something is stopping him. Presumably duels are illegal so it might just be that. 1w
dabbe @eeclayton 🎯🩵🎯 1w
dabbe So, it's like we thought. Stephen gets away, and Maggie bears the heat. It probably would have been better overall for everyone if she HAD married Stephen; at least she'd still sort of have her reputation, and Lucy and Phil would get over it someday. If I were Maggie, I'd get the hell out of dodge and away from those hypocrites. 1w

dabbe And re: the hand-arm kissing, what enrages her most is that “Stephen thought more lightly of her than he did of Lucy.“ Thus, she has been unconsciously thinking of her cousin as a rival, and she is angry that the disputed lover seems to treat her with less respect than he does her blonde cousin. #mytwocents 2w

mcctrish Poor Tom is surrounded by fuck ups 🤣🤣🤣 3w
dabbe I may be giving an unpopular opinion here, but I think Tom nailed some of Maggie's worst traits--even though he was a dick about it as usual. Maggie's overwrought passions are going to get her into trouble--IMHO. 3w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe he‘s 💯 correct. With zero tact 🤣 3w
KAO All in all, it still seems a shame that Tom and Maggie don‘t have a more mutually supportive relationship. It would be a bit of comfort for them in these trying times! #admittedlypollyanna-ish (edited) 3w
Bookwormjillk Usually I like one of the kids over the other but they both were annoying in this chapter. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t really see how Maggie got “Tom is in love with Lucy” from what Bob said but I‘ll go with it! Will the couples reconfigure leaving poor Philip alone? Also, did you notice that Bob‘s wife is short?! As a short person I was very amused 😂 3w
Leftcoastzen Yes , I wish Tom & Maggie were closer , he‘s always pretty harsh but agree with @dabbe he points out traits in Maggie that could lead to issues! 3w
ElizaMarie Tom has some points but he is such a jerk about it. He is cruel to Magggie, I feel like it just shows how immature he is. 3w

Leftcoastzen Doesn‘t take a lot of thought to wonder since father fought with Wakem & Wakem owns the property they may get turned out. Tom did the hard work to earn the money to pay the debt . And this is his reward? Tully just had to fight to his own detriment 😡 3w

Bookwormjillk Ugh. Fricken #TetchyTully 3w
ElizaMarie Wow! Okay, so I kinda felt blindsided with this. I mean the fight was coming, we know that, but... to have been so worked up that he ups and dies! And of course his #PigHeadedness totally screws his family over. Not to speak ill about the dead but... Talk about #DadOfTheYear 3w

mcctrish @BarkingMadRead he‘s a bit rash when it comes to #snakywakey 4w
Ruthiella @mcctrish I thought too Tom would sneak the money in to the tin. And for sure, even if the debts are paid, both he and Mr. T. have to work ie, stay at the Mill or find somewhere else. So this is all very performative. 4w
mcctrish @Ruthiella right! Doesn‘t their house come with running the mill? So his debts are paid and he leaves his job and now he‘s homeless too? Mrs Tulliver is going to lose her shit! #firsttheteapotsnowthehouse (edited) 4w
eeclayton It felt to me like Tom wasn't saving the family to save the family but to bask in the glory 🫤 4w
Clare-Dragonfly I am worried now that Tom has made this big announcement but doesn‘t literally have the money that something will happen to prevent them from getting it 😬 4w

mcctrish It happened faster than I thought #maggiespeaksthetruth I wonder if Tom will actually hear and understand Maggie‘s words later on? How he is inherently mean? I pity any girl he sets his eye on ( I don‘t think Tom is wrong though that #techytully being upset with Phil and Mags would be nothing compared to #snakywakey ‘s response or how compromised Mags would be if it was known she was meeting up with a boy) 4w
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - That's the thing, Tom wasn't 100% wrong; I think he was actually right about a lot of what he said, but wowsers he sure is one self-satisfied, obnoxious kid. Such an uncomplicated conscience - if I do it, it's right; if I don't do it, it's wrong 😂 Poor Maggie. I was glad that she at least put the vow into her own words! 4w

KAO I kept having to reread sentences, as my mind wandered pitifully during this short chapter. Thank goodness this didn‘t go on longer! I liked the last bit, however, about how the spiritual seed of wisdom didn‘t find fertile ground (or “hooks”) in Mr. Tulliver and simply blew away without taking hold. More foreshadowing, I presume! 1mo

Leftcoastzen Much better to have less family than a family like this ! Poor Tom trying to do what he can while listening to Uncle belittling his education. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I felt the same way! I get that you don't want to hand a pile of money to people who have proven that they aren't going to use it wisely, but Tom is genuinely trying to make good and start providing for his mom and sister, and I thought it was dreadful the way his uncle just blew him off. 1mo
