Wow.

There is power in the word
Absolutely loved this book and can‘t believe I‘ve waited so long to read it. Another young adult novel written in verse about a complicated mother/daughter relationship, a relationship with catholism, the body, relationships, family. I really liked hearing on audio as well.

This book brought up a lot for me. Absolutely loved the story.

Eggbeater I loved this one, too! Welcome to Litsy. 🐙 5d

My top 20 books I read this year. Probably top 2 are The Poet X and Long Bright River. I have a lot of diversity across fiction (only one nonfiction book though). It was really hard to narrow down, I had around 50 books out of the 328 from 2019 that were 5 star reads. 20 was as far down as I could get it. (I didn't include Harry Potter books or Coming Home by Rosamund Pilcher.) A lot of Tournament of Books picks made it!

Centique Wow you read a huge amount in 2019! Great list! 3w
bookandcat @Centique It was a great reading year! I am kicking myself because goodreads screwed up and dropped one of my faves off the big list and it probably would have been in my top 20, alas - 3w

One of my reading goals for 2019 was to read one book of poetry per month. Above is my running list—I‘m finishing out the year with 14 read (well, I will once I finish up # 14 today!). There are some fantastic books on this list. Tagged is my favorite, but The Book of Hours, Life on Mars, Brown Girl Dreaming, and The Tiny Journalist were also standouts. I‘m planning to keep up this practice next year—any recs for poetry I should put on my list?

TrishB Rapture or Sincerity by Carol Ann Duffy. Ariel by Plath. 3w
Lcsmcat Anything by Billy Collins. 3w
WomanistBibliophile Claudia Rankine and nayyirah waheed are my current favourites. For 2020 I intend to read Gwendolyn Brooks and Lucille Clifton 3w

BarbaraJean @TrishB @Lcsmcat @WomanistBibliophile Thanks so much—these are great suggestions! I always enjoy Billy Collins, but have never read a whole collection of his, and Lucille Clifton was on my list of poets to explore that I didn‘t get to this year. I‘ll be checking all of these out! 3w
cirrusrider I just decided earlier this evening to make that my one of my reading resolutions for 2020, so stumbling across this post feels like a cosmic seal of approval, yay! I recommend discovering the Polish poet Anna Kamienska. 3w
BarbaraJean @cirrusrider Oh, that‘s awesome!! I hope your 2020 poetry reading goes well! I will definitely check out Kamienska—my poetry list for the year is shaping up nicely! 3w

So much amazingness in this book! Very intense and powerful coming of age story told in verse about a girl named Xiomara. Her parents are from the Dominican Republic and the author really captured the essence of growing up in a immigrant family. I definitely understand how it won the National Book Award!

I got the chance to listen to the audiobook version. Wow what a great book. A book I can relate on the family pressure that Xiomara has to endure and parents treating you differently because you‘re a girl. A lot of different subject were mentioned: physical correction, homosexuality, love and hate relationships, religion, sex etc

This book offers a powerful narration composed solely of poems. It's a very well constructed story; the poems are powerful, they translate very well the mood of a female adolescent. It's an addictive book that will make you feel all sorts of emotions: anger, sadness, hope, desire...

Poet X is a great read, and I read it way too fast.
X finds herself in the poetry she writes and the relationship she begins to forge with her lab partner, beginning to discover more to herself beyond daughter and sister. Unfortunately when her mother discovers her writing it becomes a point of contention between them and X has to overcome to share herself and her truths.

This is a book everyone should read. It has something for everyone - race, sexuality, family, bullying. Xiomara (see-oh-MAH-ruh) is from the Dominic Republic and lives with a very strict mom, a father who lives there but doesn't parent, and her twin brother Xavier. She's struggling with her own identity which her mom takes as outward defiance.

I finished this one a couple days ago. I almost never read poetry so I didn't know how I would feel about this one. But I loved it! This book gave me all the feels and my heart broke for Xiomara. She was just trying to figure out how to be a teenager with having a very strict mom who felt her way of thinking was the only way. Elizabeth Acevedo is now an auto buy author for me!

The Poet X is a YA novel told in verse by a slam poet about a blossoming poet. It‘s all the great things about YA: coming of age, finding your voice, first love; but so much more. Race, religion, family, LGBTQ, and just flat out great writing. For everyone who loves great writing, not just teens. But if you have a teen, or know a teen, pleas recommend it.

This book is crammed with so many feelings. I think it describes so perfectly and painfully what it‘s like growing up, feeling boxed in, questioning, finding yourself, and finding your words—speaking your truth. I like the themes around religion, spirituality, guilt, and shame. I wish I had this book growing up. I will buy it for my daughter.
