The Blackhouse: Lewis Trilogy 1
The Blackhouse: Lewis Trilogy 1 | Peter May
The Isle of Lewis is the most remote, harshly beautiful place in Scotland, where the difficulty of existence seems outweighed only by people's fear of God. But older, pagan values lurk beneath the veneer of faith, the primal yearning for blood and revenge. When a brutal murder on the island bears the hallmarks of a similar slaying in Edinburgh, police detective Fin Macleod is dispatched north to investigate. But since he himself was raised on Lewis, the investigation also represents a journey home and into his past. Each year the island's men perform the hunting of the gugas, a savage custom no longer necessary for survival, but which they cling to even more fiercely in the face of the demands of modern morality. For Fin the hunt recalls a horrific tragedy, which after all this time may have begun to demand another sacrifice. The Blackhouse is a crime novel of rare power and vision. Peter May has crafted a page-turning murder mystery that explores the darkness in our souls, and just how difficult it is to escape the past.

This riveting novel is set on the beautiful Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides,& a remote, desolate spit of a rock off its coast,An Sgeir. One can feel the biting cold, the ferocious wind,& sea storms‘ tangy salt thru the vivid & descriptive language. After 20 yrs,DI Fin MacLeod is summoned back from Glasgow to the island to investigate a murder.Fin‘s traumatic childhood & self protective”memory loss”has him leery of revisiting & reconnecting 🔽

Readergrrl I read this novel last year some time and when I finished I just had to look up the location and find out as much as I could about the bird hunt. Fascinating! 11mo
kspenmoll 🔼With people and places. The summer before Fun left secondary school for Glasgow,he was invited on the annual guga pilgrimage. 10 chosen men braved the open sea to the rock of An Sgeir to cull 2,000 guga chicks & return with this delicate food. My current read totally counts as a series read (book 4 in the Gray Man series).

Black House is for #Booked2023 as part of a trilogy.

I feel really excited for these two selections and am sure I'll start the year with both of my bingo reads, read.

Combining days 1 & 2. My favorite read from January was The Bookshop of Second Chances. Favorite from February was The Blackhouse, which is the first of a trilogy, and a 5 ⭐️ read. Loved the whole series! (Introduced to me by @EadieB - thanks Eadie!)

I am aiming to finish The Blackhouse for this Readathon, so I will probably be reading it all weekend. I‘m also in the middle of The Keeper of Lost Things.

We were out last night later than we‘ve been out in YEARS. Today will be a day for laying about and reading all day. (Thankfully, not hungover because we were smart. 🤣🍻)

The Blackhouse is excellent! Great storytelling.

EadieB @Elizabeth2 My husband just finished the trilogy. He loves May‘s writing. Now he‘s reading the Enzo series. Enjoy the rest of Black House! 2y

Set on the Isle of Lewis, this suspenseful novel follows a detective from Edinburgh as he returns to his childhood home in search of a possible serial killer. Once there, he discovers that the past has a way of digging its way back into his life and that all he remembers is not as it seems and that he may have been (see below)

This was my #TartanNoir for #Booked2020 and I am so glad! I probably never would have read it on my own, and I loved it.

The murder is gruesome (ickiest postmortem I‘ve read for years), the detective character is so well developed, the backstory is rich, the mystery and secrets are perfectly laid out, the descriptions of the Isle of Lewis are vivid—the writing overall is fantastic. It‘s dark, brutal and lovely.

Will read the others!

I picked this one up to fulfill the Tartan Noir prompt for #Booked2020. It sounded interesting and I thought some dark suspense would be a nice distraction. I'm about half way through and thus far this reads more like a drama about a man coming home juxtaposed with a coming of age tale. Where's the suspense? The murder is more like a tertiary storyline at this point. Does it get more suspense/thriller-ish?

Avanders What a disappointment... especially w a cover like that! 4y
Mitch I read this and loved the setting ( it was a pre-read before I spent a month on the island of Harris for work! Wanted to get in the mood!) but it didn‘t really offer up ‘suspense‘ .... 4y
TheKidUpstairs @Mitch it is well written, and has a sense of place, I think it's more of a disappointing marketing issue. Its branded as a tale of suspense, a detective investigating two pain by linked murders, and I'm getting almost none of that. It's too bad, and it seems a disservice to the book and the author. 4y

Currently rereading Afterimage by Helen Humphreys, and trying to stay interested in the tagged for #Booked2020 - Tartan Noir

My last couple picks have been rereads, and I'm finding it extremely comforting to revisit books I loved years ago.

Cooking, baking, and luxuriously long showers.

I've never enjoyed reading on my phone, but I'm thankful for it now! Line up at the grocery store, but I'm able to jump on their WiFi and read some more Tartan Noir for #Booked2020! #smallblessings

I liked this audiobook; the narration is great as is the narrator's accent. Good descriptions of the Outer Hebrides. Interesting storyline.

Pickpick

This was a good one. When a murder on the Isle of Lewis appears to be similar to one in Edinburgh, the investigating officer Fin Macleod is sent to determine if the cases are linked. Macleod grew up in Lewis & his return stirs up old hatreds, exposes lies & reveals secrets, as he races to find a killer. Atmospheric & brooding, the story jumps between the present and Macleod‘s childhood. It starts slow but when it really gets going—wow! Very good.

Really enjoying this atmospheric read. Easy to get lost in the story & that‘s a great thing. I need to give a shout out to my friend who dropped off a box of delicious treats—The Child makes me smile—& just in time, too. They‘ve just announced Governor Prtizker will be holding a press conference this afternoon & issuing a shelter in place order for the state (Illinois) starting tomorrow.

A delicious, & very cute, treat with my afternoon reading.

Settling into some new routines as we negotiate working, studying & living at home. I‘ve taken to enjoying a coffee, some chocolate & a chapter or two after a lunch—a little quiet time in the middle of the day. I‘ve only just started the tagged book but I‘m really enjoying it. And, as the day gets cloudier & storm clouds gather, it feels like the perfect book to be reading right now. I hope everyone has a good book to keep them company!
