The new Victorian chiller from the author of Radio 2 Book Club pick, The Silent Companions. Is prisoner Ruth Butterham mad or a murderer? Victim or villain?Dorothea and Ruth. Prison visitor and prisoner. Powerful and powerless. Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea's charitable work leads her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted with the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets teenage seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another theory: that it is possible to kill with a needle and thread. For Ruth attributes her crimes to a supernatural power inherent in her stitches. The story Ruth has to tell of her deadly creations - of bitterness and betrayal, of death and dresses - will shake Dorothea's belief in rationality, and the power of redemption. Can Ruth be trusted? Is she mad, or a murderer?

A dark, gothic, Victorian-era story. The trauma faced by the poor and the restrictions placed upon an heiress.
Despite the horrors, Ruth and the other girls endured while working as seamstresses, I really enjoyed this book.

Simona @Libby1 I have read so far by her only Silent Companions and The Corset. I liked both of them, so think that I can say that yes, I like Laura Purcell. Silent Companions is perfect for this time of the year. The story is very atmospheric, gothic and quite intense quick read. I like it more than Corset. 2mo

Ruth claims that the garments she sews were unknowingly #haunted by her past bad experiences and her emotional reactions to them. Is she telling the truth or does she belong in an asylum?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was excellent! Almost as good as The Silent Companions. It reminds me of Sarah Waters‘ Affinity but I liked it so much more. The ending was very satisfying. @Lisas.Library make sure you buy this sooner rather than later, especially if you liked The Silent Companions.

1) s.a.
2) no plans whatsoever
3) I like them all, it's just that some pale blues don't suit me
4) Jan - but my cousin once removed was born a few days before I made my grand entrance and got that name, so the next choice would have been my brother's name: Arend. They were so rooting on having a boy that when I arrived they couldn't come up with a girl's name, hence I was called after my mother's middle name.

I didn‘t love this one. I went into it thinking I would enjoy it but I had to make myself finish it. I felt like it was trying to be shocking just for the sake of being shocking. And the whole business with Dorothea‘s phrenology “research” frankly annoyed me. This one just didn‘t work for me. I shall donate it and hope it finds a more appreciative reader than I.

#BookMail Pt2 In the missing package of books was a signed edition of this book. When I thought it was MIA for good, I ordered another signed copy from another seller, so this copy will be added to my stockpile of books for my big New Year/1500 Followers giveaway I‘m planning. Once Xmas is over, keep your eyes peeled for my How To Enter post. The tagged book is a gothic chiller about two women in Victorian England, one a murderer who may be mad.🔪

Although I found some of the early descriptions a bit graphic, I'm glad I continued with this novel. Purcell's vivid descriptions are especially part of my favourite bit. I'd read The Silent Companions and loved Purcell's writing. I'm reading Alias Grace at the moment and I'm noticing some parallels between the narrative structures. Solid 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Aimeesue Thanks for the review. I read The Silent Companions and enjoyed it, but have been waffling on this one. 13mo

A creepy, gothic Victorian novel. A dark and atmospheric tale with disturbing undertones. There are subtle hints of menace throughout which only makes it the more unnerving. Beautifully written with some brilliant characters, not all particularly pleasant to say the least! It drew me in from the first page and gripped me until the last. Such an absorbing and mesmerising story, cleverly plotted with an unexpected and excellent twist at the end.

Laura Purcell and #Pigeonhole do it again. This is the perfect book to curl up with on a cold evening, absolute page turner. The gothic tale of a lady interested in phrenology visiting a mysterious woman accused of murdering her mistress. The prisoner is a former seamstress convinced that she can harm people with her sewing. One of those books that make you question paranormal elements.

I'm almost stuck for words. This is a masterpiece of gothic literature. The story had me gripped from the very beginning and I couldn't get enough. It is dark, chilling and harrowing with an ending that really does the rest of the book justice (I was worried that it couldn't live up to the rest of the story...but it sure did). One of my best of 2018 - a full-on 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

My three current reads courtesy of the #Pigeonhole app. The Clockmaker's Daughter is a reread as I also received an ARC from NetGalley, and I have to admit, it is definitely better for a second reading. Enjoying it much more. I also ordered a signed copy of the hardback from my local indie bookshop yesterday.

#BookMail Pt1 I absolutely loved this authors debut novel called The Silent Companions, so as soon as I saw this for preorder on Waterstones.com I had to order it. Also set in Victorian England, it follows 2 very different women, Dorothea-a society lady doing charitable work & Ruth- poor & convicted of murder. When their paths cross, Ruth spins such a tale of madness & magic that Dorothea is caught up in her story. Is Ruth mad or a murderer?🤔
