I wasn‘t old enough to see this movie in theaters. However, as a teenager it often played on one of the four channels I had to surf. Oh, how it brought me to angsty teenage tears. This is a super quick read and it ages fine - except thanks HIPPA, a patient should learn their fate 1st 😳. I absolutely knew the ending (and catch phrase) yet still I cried - maybe a bit for my 15 yo channel surfing self 🥲😂

June #DoubleSpin Cat: less 250 pages

marleed @TheAromaofBooks I purchased the anniversary addition of this book during the lockdown in 2020 when it seems I spent a year‘s income on book buying. I‘ve been hoping for a hit on this category since I first created BS categories in Jan 2023 just so I could prioritize this little book which took just over an hour to read! 6mo
Ruthiella Ah, the years of only network television and the joy of catching movies like this! 😂 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2020 is the year I discovered Book Outlet, so I also may have had some book purchasing issues 😂 😂 😂 6mo
marleed @Ruthiella omg, if only I could have the hours back that I spent channel surfing (a word and activity lost to technology 😄) as a tween and young teen! This, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Wait until Dark (Audrey Hepburn) are the movies that come immediately to mind. The later two scarred the hell out of me - if I remember right, one channel hosted Friday Fright nights after 9 or 10. …And funny reading this as a grandparent - dad‘s not soooo bad! 6mo
marleed @TheAromaofBooks it may take me years to get through my personal stack of books published in 2020! 6mo

The Novel That Taught the World
“Love means never having to say you‘re sorry.”

This was a good, quick book. Glad I finally got around to reading it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Next up is The Neverending Story.

This was the bestselling novel in the US in 1970. I've been aware of it forever ("Love means never having to say you're sorry," FFS ?) but it's not really my kind of thing, never seen the movie, wasn't interested. Pleasantly surprised to find it very short-- barely 100 pages-- and pretty readable: bland, but direct. It won't take much more than an hour of your time, if you're interested. I'm still not a fan, but have read many worse bestsellers.

thegreensofa I love your review. 3y
Crazeedi Remember vividly reading this when it came out 3y
swynn @Crazeedi That may have been the best time to read it. The thing that will probably stick with me most is how the doctor doesn't share Jenny's diagnosis with her but tells the husband and suggest he hide it from her as long as possible. And husband does! WTF?!? It probably made sense in 1970 .... 3y

obviously a very quick read, took me probably less than an hour. at first i didn‘t really understand the hype around it from my mom. seemed rushed and pretentious. but it really is a charming love story, and the sadness gets you in an unexpected way. you don‘t expect to as sad as you are, until the last page when his dad comes. very touching and lovely. makes you question if love is worth it, but also assures you that it is

(Day 1 - #Cherish)

*Oliver absolutely cherished Jenny in Love Story. Sad book, sad movie. Check out Ryan O‘Neal & Ali MacGraw in “Love Story” (Erich Segal) in 1970 and again in 2016 (bottom left), when they reunited for the play “Love Letters” (A. R. Gurney).

This was surprisingly short! I thought I‘d seen the movie years ago, but now I‘m not sure; it‘s possible I only saw bits and pieces. I think it would have been nice if things hadn‘t moved so quickly in the story, if the reader had more time to get to know Oliver and Jenny. I thought the end would devastate me, even knowing how it ended, but it didn‘t. It was still a good story, overall, but I guess I just expected a bit more.

This is a sweet, sad, romantic story. Not a lot to it, but well written with charming characters and the author does a great job with the narration. I was shocked to discover we used the same Whitman poem in our wedding vows without ever having read/seen it. #audiobook #BirthdayChallenge #1970

Hubby went on vacation last week while I had to work... I was surprised by this text Wednesday afternoon. First, I've never known him to seek out a bookstore on his own and second, he always tells me I have too many books. And what makes this even better - he's on Book #2 this summer when typically I can only get him to read one! ❤️❤️❤️

CocoReads Did he go to Boulder bookstore? I went there last summer on vacation and it had me dreaming of living there. 7y

CocoReads @KellyK I may never make it back there but I loved every moment of my CO trip last year. Except the first hotel my hub tried to make us stay at in Estes. It had bed bugs and serial killers written all over it. Luckily the room tripped my allergies and we found somewhere else to stay. 7y

Have any of you noticed a trend in contemporary romances toward bland happiness? Two gorgeous people meet and have amazing sex. If he was a player, he does a 180. Nothing separates them except for a near death event of some sort. I want passion! Conflict! Humiliation, loss, the sense this relationship matters more than anything else. Did I mention the guy is always rich, an alpha who morphs beta & happily does dishes?

LeahBergen I love that last line! 😂 8y

ApoptyGina69 I watched the movie a few years ago and, for having been so popular in its day, it was boring and so dated. I have t read the book, but sounds like I don't need to rush to. 8y
SheReadsAndWrites I can't decide whether to stand up and cheer or start crying. I think I'll do both. I have felt this way for a while now and have kept my thoughts to myself. Thank YOU for saying it! I read a book recently that had the most romantic scene with a couple laying on the hood of a car, talking as they watched planes fly over. That scene was 3 paragraphs & led to a 4 page sex scene. I wanted the car hood back... it's why I love historical romance.... (edited) 8y
SheReadsAndWrites SO MUCH great sexual tension in the flirting and brushing of hands and the romance is off the charts because of the depth of character and relationship. 8y
SheReadsAndWrites Sorry - soapbox moment 😬 Bottom line - I AGREE!! 🙌🏼 8y
SheReadsAndWrites I would also like to admit, if I may, I struggle with the whole "every hot guy is an alpha" thing. I don't find that to be true. And I'm not a huge fan of the word alpha. There. I said it... 8y

My parents initially planned on naming me Lisa. However, fearing that name would be too popular, my mom was on the lookout for other girl names (had I been a boy I would have been named Robert after my dad). They went to see Love Story at the theater before I was born and as a result, I'm Jennifer, a name so popular in my age group that it left Lisa in the dust. 😂😂😂

#samename #riotgram

callunakeep LMAO! My mother named me Heather because she didn't like shortened forms of names (Bob for Robert or Christy for Christine) and Heather had no short form...my 8 aunts and uncles foiled her evil plan though and dubbed me "Hez" and still call me "Hez" 46 years later! ?? (edited) 8y
ValerieAndBooks Have you seen this time-lapse map of most popular girl baby names over the years? Yes, Jennifer held that top spot longer than Lisa 😊. https://www.google.com/amp/jezebel.com/map-sixty-years-of-the-most-popular-names... 8y
Peddler410 I don't remember the movie, but I'm named Jennifer because of an actress with an O' name. My parents liked how Jennifer worked with -- I think it was O'Conner .... I was O'Dowd 8y

auntie_jenn my mother swears she didn't know of any Jennifers when she named me in 1970....really? 8y
NovelGirl82 Yep- Tiffany right here! ✋I was actually named after the jewelry store (my daddy was a jeweler), but according to my mom it was not a very popular name when they decided on it. It became very popular! 8y
MeganAnn 😂😂 My mom swears she didn't know any Megans when she named me in the mid-80s either. But every job I've ever had except for my current one has had at least one other Megan working there at some point. I have two very good friends named Megan, plus two different former college roommates, and a number of acquaintances. When we were looking for names for our son, Axton, I immediately ruled out anything that was even a little popular. 8y
LitHousewife @Reviewsbylola When I was little, Stephanie was one of the names I had picked out for a daughter. Definitely a name of the 80s. 😍 8y
LitHousewife @auntie_jenn Did she live in a bubble??? LOL! 😂😂😂 8y
LitHousewife @NovelGirl82 Your mom may be right. I think there must be a collective unconscious when it comes to baby names. I didn't want my daughter to be another "Jennifer." My husband and I picked Emma, an old fashioned name. No problem, right? Wrong. Thanks a lot Friends for naming the one baby on your show Emma. #youcantwin 8y
LitHousewife @MeganAnn I like the name Megan, too. 🤗 We tried that by picking Emma, but then Friends happened. Sigh. I'm surprised, just because you came up with the name Axton, that there hasn't been more. It's very cute, yet rugged name. 😍 8y
MeganAnn @LitHousewife aww thanks! There are plenty of kids named Rylan, Peyton, Cason, Mason, Keaton and any other 'on name you can think of in his school so I guess we still followed the trend 😳 but we've yet to hear of another Axton. It fits him so well too. 8y
NovelGirl82 @LitHousewife I think mine became popular thanks to the singer. I don't know. My best friend of 20 years is Tiffany, too, and we had another one in our graduating class of 325. 😂😂 8y

It's short, sweet, a bit sappy but still a good read. I disagree, however, with "Love means never having to say you're sorry." For me love encompasses forgiveness & humility and that means you are ready to say sorry when you have done wrong. When the role is reversed & they're the one asking forgiveness from you, you accept it because love keeps no record of wrongs. But I guess we all have different perspectives on love :)
