In "a wonderful, atmospheric mystery"* featuring forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway and DCI Harry Nelson, six bodies of men killed during World War II turn up in Brighton--bringing with them a long-buried, nefarious secret. *Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Just back from maternity leave, forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway is struggling to juggle motherhood and work when she is called in to investigate human bones that have surfaced on a remote Norfolk beach. The presence of DCI Harry Nelson, the married father of her daughter, does not help. The bones, six men with their arms bound, date back to World War II, a desperate time on this stretch of coastline. As Ruth and Nelson investigate, Home Guard veteran Archie Whitcliffe reveals a secret the old soldiers had vowed to protect with their lives. But then Archie is killed and a German journalist arrives, asking questions about Operation Lucifer, a plan to stop a German invasion, and a possible British war crime. What was Operation Lucifer? And who is prepared to kill to keep its secret?

Characters are likable and realistic, and I like them more and more after every book.

I am not a big fun of this kind of crimes: deaths that have happened during the war. They doesn't feel intriguing enough, somehow. That made this book worse than the first books in the series, this was boring. And then there was a side story that had nothing to do with the main plot and felt super unnecessary.

I still love the setting!

I still have mixed feelings about this series (I am rather new to the genre and still getting used to the idea of so many murders happening in the same small place and involving the same small group of people), but overall I'm enjoying it and plan to keep reading. I like Ruth.

Deblovestoread I just finished the first one and have mixed feelings as well...I especially didn't like the continued mentions of her weight. I will continue on at least through the 2nd as the first has to lay a lot of ground work usually, and the 2nd seems to always be a bit better. 2y
ImperfectCJ @Deblovestoread I agree! I almost wrote that I hope Ruth moves past some of her character's insecurities, but I feel like that's kind of happening throughout the first three books. I don't want to say more than that so as not to spoil things if you keep on going, but I will say that I'm kind of conflicted because I recognize that kind of self-talk as realistic, but it can still feel a bit squirmy to read so much of it. 2y
TrishB @Deblovestoread that‘s why I didn‘t read past book 1, I thought the fat shaming was awful. I asked other people and they said it remained in the series- but I‘d be really interested in your thoughts when you get there. 2y
See All 6 Comments
ImperfectCJ @TrishB I find this to be a tough thing in fiction, portraying a character's personal insecurities without perpetuating the cultural shame associated with them. A successful and respected academic who feels insecure about her physical appearance seems realistic (if a little overdone), but I would love it if this becomes something she's able to incorporate into her full view of herself, preferably without the validation of a male character. 2y
TrishB Yes totally agree, but guess I have so many other series where I don‘t have this making me feel uncomfortable and sad really that I choose not to carry on reading. 2y
ImperfectCJ @TrishB Absolutely! There's definitely something to be said for prioritizing pleasure reading that we actually find pleasurable to read! 2y

The past is never the past, we are doomed to repeat it or relive it. When six bodies are found buried under a cliff at the beach, WWII seems to have resurfaced, at least in one localized incident. Ruth Galloway and Inspector Nelson work to solve this latest of their mysteries, while struggling with personal complications. Secrets, of all sorts, are hard to conceal. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am enjoying this series immensely. The plots are well thoughtout and the characters are well developed. I love how the lives of even the minor characters are getting intertwined. There is so much more than just a good mystery in these books and I am already looking forward to the next book. 4⭐ #SpookOween #Necronomathon @Patchshank #Wickedathon @Staycurious #LittenListen @aperfectmjk #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

A perfect read for a wet Sunday. The third in the Ruth Galloway series was very enjoyable as she struggles to balance being a new mum while 6 sets of human bones are discovered under the named house, an area gradually eroded by the sea. Ruth is a unique character and I have bk 4 ready to read soon.

I love Elly Griffith‘s Ruth Galloway series, set in Norfolk, an area I know well as my parents live there. In this, the third book of the series, human remains are uncovered when a team of archaeologists are investigating coastal erosion.

Another enjoyable foray into Ruth Galloway! Cosy mysteries (that have a bit of intellectual content) are so satisfying to read. It always make me laugh though, at how much misfortune happens in these small communities!

Another great book in the Ruth Galloway Series by Elly Griffiths. Forensic anthropologist, Ruth, initially involved in identifying bones buried on the beach, finds herself embroiled in several related murders. Quirky and witty (as usual), I highly recommend this series to that enjoy the TV series “Bones“ or a good mystery with an unique cast of characters. 4/5 stars. #crime #mystery

rretzler I love that series! 6y
cathysaid @rretzler I just checked out from the library a standalone by her. We shall see...I‘m afraid I might miss my comfortable characters. 6y
rretzler I read The Stranger Diaries earlier this year. It was good, but very different from her Ruth Galloway series and I didn‘t like it as much. Her Stephens and Mephisto series is good - better than The Stranger Diaries, but not quite as good as Ruth Galloway. 6y

Book 3 of series. This continues the escapades of forensic anthropologist Ruth Galloway. She always seems to be getting in the middle of dangerous situations. I enjoyed parts of this book, but the mystery to be solved was a bit weak. 3.5 ⭐

Annl I agree. I love reading about Ruth‘s life and as @rwmg pointed out the “you know what hit the fan” but I thought I knew who did it early on and I was correct, although I did not know how the pieces fit together. But I will still keep reading the series because of Ruth! 6y

I really enjoyed this installment! It had been awhile since I last read the series, and it was fun to get back into Norfolk and the characters. I found this mystery particularly engaging, and enjoyed the range of characters. The proportion of mystery and Ruth's personal storyline was just right.

There were smaller bits that I figured out, but the main one was a total shock to me! 6 skeletons are found in a crevice on a Norfolk beach, and Ruth is called in to help investigate. With WWII, erosion, secrets and lies, romance, friends from the past... this was a cracking good read. On to #4!

Meg11726 @morgan_krahn I had her sleeping in bed with me, my husband slept in spare room, while I was recovering from my section and she was so full of mucus I was nervous to leave her as she would sometimes go apneic.
