3.5⭐️/5⭐️
12 short stories by David Sedaris, the first story is the funniest, I love his deadpanned deliveries on all of them.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Annual #reread. This is definitely not for everyone, but it‘s 100% for me. I‘ve probably read this more times than any other book. Dark as hell, but so funny, especially the personal essays.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Annual #reread. It just isn‘t Christmas until I‘ve revisited “Santaland Diaries,” “Six to Eight Black Men,” and everything between. I never tire of Sedaris.
collection of Sedaris‘ hilarious essays some autobiographical, some fictional, all related to holidays. I recommend getting an audio version because the author‘s delivery is exquisite. https://cannonballread.com/2022/10/holidays-on-ice-elcicco/
✅First David Sedaris
✅ Quick read
✅ Winner of Most Bizarre Christmas Stories
✅ Favorite one involves working as a Macy‘s Elf
✅ Read at your own risk
Some kind person put this in the #LittleFreeLibrary right in front of my building.
I especially consider it a score because most of the books put in there are for kids (there‘s a childcare next door, and it‘s a children‘s reading org that sponsors it).
And finally the door on the LFL got fixed; it recently blew off when we had particularly bad weather…
New Hoopla audiobook. Holiday theme. First David Sedaris!
I looked for an available audiobook that wasn‘t my typical shoomzy Christmas tale. This book was published in 1998, some of the comedy didn‘t age well, is offensive, and reminds me realize that even in our current environment of political meanness we‘ve come a long way in understanding comedy at the expense of groups of people is really not funny. His essay of translating non-English speaking traditions to English is my favorite.
I have been a David Sedaris fan for a very long time, but this collection did not hit the mark for me like his earlier collections. Some of the words he uses are no longer acceptable and made me cringe. 😬 Still, the essays where Sedaris writes about childhood memories with his siblings and sharp-tongued parents shine. “The Santaland Diaries” has also been adapted into a one man play, and is a fun experience. 3⭐️#wintergames #mistletoemaniacs
Husband went to the local library‘s used book sale today and surprised me with this! We saw sedaris speak in September. lol wit
Just finished my first holiday read and holy crap you littens were right. It does get dark. I mean geez.

Book 29- 2021: I didn‘t love all of this audiobook but I did love the story about Sedaris‘ time as a Macy‘s elf and the live section and those alone are enough to get me to recommend this book. It was funny, sad, whimsical, melancholy and often just plain strange! And it got me into the holiday spirit as my first completed ok of #wintergames2021 #teamgamesleighers #WGwordsearch 300 (then I stopped counting) Points total 326
I get why this collection isn‘t for everyone but for me, listening to Sedaris share his days as a Macy‘s Holiday Elf was priceless. And when he describes the traditions associated with Christmas Eve around the world, I was laughing out loud. I‘ve heard Sedaris read a few of these personal essays before and they are STILL just as funny. His delivery is always perfect.
Thanks for the reminder @britt_brooke I‘m SO in the mood for some Sedaris ♥️🙌🏻🎧#NonFictionNovember
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Annual #reread to get me into the awkward, dark, and hilarious holiday spirit! As usual, my favorites are his personal essays, but the short stories here are decent, too. Disturbing as hell and intentionally offensive. This book is def not for everyone, but it *is* for me. I‘ll always be grateful for the ridiculous masterpiece that is “Six to Eight Black Men” - a funny AF essay about Dutch Christmas customs.
One of my goals this year is to stay on top of posting Litsy reviews/book challenge prompts. Over three weeks in and I'm finally doing it! I find his short stories to be elitist and mean-spirited, but David Sedaris's essays are perfection.
#litsyatoz @BookishMarginalia
The first chapter was HILARIOUS but the subsequent chapters fell a little flat. Also, it was unclear to the average person if it was fiction or nonfiction. I usually love Sedaris, but this was just eh.
Book 4
The opening essay, “SantaLand Diaries” is genuinely funny. However, despite my being a Sedaris fan, and understanding that his whole schtick is humor by way of shock value and offensiveness; the subsequent essays were a slog. It is safe to say that many of these essays...did not age well.
My first read of the year done! Which is great since I failed miserably at my goal for 2020 😂
Update day... lots of updates coming your way from this past week. This was a quick fun listen. There's something about David Sedaris' humor that just kind of catches you off guard. Sometimes you just don't know where he's going with it. #WinterGames2020 #readnosedreindeer #littenlisten #bookmasbingo #bookishbingo #ReadYourWay #CrushTheRush #DashingDecember #ChristmasSpirit #WinterSolstice (x2)
Haven't listened to an audio book in awhile, but listened to this over the last few days.
One book down, two to go to meet my goals for #dashingdecember and #wintersolsticereasathon
This was my first Sedaris and while some of the stories were funny, some of the just didn't work for me. I'm glad I listened to it. I think if I read it, I wouldn't have enjoyed it at all.
Finally baking! First up Cinnamon Espress Chip Cookies. These are so easy and so good! Plus they're #vegan (mine aren't). Almost done with the tagged book.

Now, for a little bit of fun. #WinterGames2020 #readnosedreindeer @StayCurious
I listened to this years ago one Christmas and remember frequently laughing out loud. It did not disappoint the second time!
+26 for this holiday read! @StayCurious #teamrednosedreindeer
1. My mom or Santa Claus always put a dollar and an orange in our stockings. I did it for my is and at 31 and 26 it's still the thing they mention at Christmas. My daughter is now keeping the tradition with my grandson.
2. Everything! I have been in a grateful state of mind this week and so much is around me to be grateful for.
#thankfulthursday @Cosmos_Moon @Jerdencon
Omg this is a new holiday favorite! Sedaris‘s dry wit had me CACKLING. When I‘m bummed about how different the holidays are this year, his sarcasm reminds me that some parts are actually terrible - rush to get pictures with Santa anyone? This is going to have to be an annual read for me.
12 stories/essays (3 not about Xmas) so 226 points for #wintergames #teamreadnosedreindeer
As is my usual feel with Sedaris, some pieces were great, some not my thing. I LOVED the theatre critic reviewing children's pageants, that one made me cackle with glee.

My first (and maybe last) Sedaris. SantaLand Diaries was moderately humorous, if you like observational humor that‘s dark and sarcastic. The only other one of the 12 I found remotely amusing was Six to Eight Black Men. The fictional pieces I didn‘t like at all—not his forte and some just haven‘t aged well.

Loving all the wonderful cards! Thank you, @LibrarianRyan for putting this together!

I love the tagged book, and some of the card swap group will understand why I am referencing it here.
I listen to this most years around the holidays! #readnosedreindeer #wintergames @StayCurious free space #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks
I‘m usually a fan of David Sedaris & his quirky style but this was not my favorite. I think maybe because the book was written in 1997 & now we are more aware of our use of language. One more holiday book down & one more bingo square marked off, 26 points.

This is a disappointed No. I really wanted to like this. I guess I just don't get this author. Some of his stuff is really very funny (the Halloween story made me cackle), but too much of his humor crosses into mean-spiritedness to me. And oh boy it didn't age well.
I did really like how this audiobook incorporated bits of music.
I'll math out my points in a little while 😝 #wintergames2020 #merryreaders @Clwojick
Book club December pick! I love Sedaris and am enjoying this one so far. #bookclub #davidsedaris #fiftypercentbookclub
Going for my first #bookspin #bookspinbingo #merryreaders I‘m finishing my first semester of grad school in the next few weeks. Looking forward to getting some reading done during my month off
I found this book to be all over the place. I liked his personal stories but the fiction ones were pretty harsh, I think they went a little too far. Some people on Goodreads felt the same way i do but they got reamed out by people, i was surprised! I won't give up on him yet but his writing may not be for me...
There are very few things I can‘t handle or that I find offensive. The use of the “r-word” is definitely on that short list. Sedaris uses it so frequently in the first story that I had to bail. It soured the whole book for me. I still like Sedaris. I still think Let‘s Explore Diabetes with Owls is freaking hilarious. I‘ll probably read the rest of his books. But I don‘t see myself picking this particular one up again. 🧩 💙💙💙
"I'd hope to spend the evening in my bedroom, working on the pastel portrait of Socrates I planned to quietly give myself as an anti-Christmas present." - quote from the story "Dinah, the Christmas Whore" #WinterGames #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick
If you have ever recieved a cringe worthy Christmas letter (are there non-cringe worthy Christmas letters?), this is the story for you. This satirical letter tells of the Dunbars and their legal woes, as the mother pleads her case. PLEADS!!!! She was quite understanding when her husband's illegitimare half Vietnamese daughter showed up on her doorstep.
