Girl from the Savoy
Girl from the Savoy | Hazel Gaynor
Presenting a dazzling new historical novel The Girl From The Savoy is as sparkling as champagne and as thrilling as the era itself. Sometimes life gives you cotton stockings. Sometimes it gives you a Chanel gown Dolly Lane is a dreamer; a downtrodden maid who longs to dance on the London stage, but her life has been fractured by the Great War. Memories of the soldier she loved, of secret shame and profound loss, by turns pull her back and spur her on to make a better life. When she finds employment as a chambermaid at London s grandest hotel, The Savoy, Dolly takes a step closer to the glittering lives of the Bright Young Things who thrive on champagne, jazz and rebellion. Right now, she must exist on the fringes of power, wealth and glamor she must remain invisible and unimportant. But herfortunes take an unexpected turn when she responds to a struggling songwriter s advertisement for a muse and finds herself thrust into London s exhilarating theatre scene and into the lives of celebrated actress, Loretta May, and her brother, Perry. Loretta and Perry may have the life Dolly aspires to, but they too are searching for something. Now, at the precipice of the life she has and the one she longs for, the girl from The Savoy must make difficult choices: between two men; between two classes, between everything she knows and everything she dreams of. A brighter future is tantalizingly close but can a girl like Dolly ever truly leave her past behind?"

“But in the end-no matter the distance or the complications in between-the things we truly care for will always come back to us.”

Loved this historical fiction about love, friendship, following our dreams and the aftermath of the horrors or war.

Ending 2020 on a positive reading note. A reflective look at the past with big dreams for the future, this novel follows a few characters from different social classes as they become intertwined with each other. A slow burner that becomes a riveting story. I love the sense of hope in this novel, despite some pretty horrific things that have happened in the characters‘ past. #LiteraryCrew

It‘s time to discuss this month‘s #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead ! There are five questions marked as spoilers.

What did you think of the novel overall? Anything that stuck out to you that you wish to discuss?

Crazeedi Sorry I missed this Jess, sounds like a good book, I've read others by this author I've enjoyed. Let me know about your next read, I may want to join 4y
Chrissyreadit I did not get to this one- what did you think? Is it a must read? 4y
Librarybelle @Crazeedi We are starting this one in January : 4y
See All 8 Comments
Librarybelle @Chrissyreadit I‘m hoping to finish it up today. I like it! Post WWI Era, so it has a lot of the emerging social changes and 1920s flavor to the story. All of the characters are also haunted by the effects of war. Try it when you have a chance! 4y
Crazeedi @Librarybelle I'm going to look for it 4y
Jerdencon I really enjoyed it! Loved reading about London in the 20‘s. 4y
litenthusiast I really loved it. I enjoy books set in the 1920s and loved how theatre and jazz were incorporated into the story. 4y

5. Ultimately, Dolly leaves for America without any romantic attachment in order to chase her dreams, and the epilogue offers an insight into her future. What would you like Dolly to have done in the intervening years? ~from Reading Group Discussion Questions #LiteraryCrew

litenthusiast I think Dolly ended up doing what she ultimately wanted, becoming a star of the stage. I kind of liked that she had no romantic attachment because it allowed her to be independent. However, I would have liked to see how her relationship with Teddy progressed. I personally imagine they wrote letters back and forth during her time and it helped strengthen their friendship. He seemed to really understand her dreams. 4y
BethM I loved this the most. I imagine she lived a fabulous, adventurous life filled with happiness and intrigue. 4y
Jerdencon @BethM I totally agree - I think she had a great life and probably a few love affairs along the way! 4y
CoffeeNBooks I have to admit, I was kind of hoping that Teddy would go to America with her. But, knowing the time period, I knew that wouldn't happen. I'm glad they both knew that going to America was what was best for Dolly. 4y

4. Teddy returns from the war suffering from a severe form of shell shock, a very misunderstood condition during and after the Great War. What surprised you the most about Teddy‘s condition and treatment? How did the discovery that Dolly was Teddy‘s “nurse” affect your connection with them both? ~from Reading Group Discussion Questions #LiteraryCrew

BethM I had a lot more@respect for Teddy and his inner I like her thoughts once I figured out Dolly was the nurse. 4y
Jerdencon I liked finding out that Dolly was the nurse and I had respect for her for trying so hard to reach Teddy. 4y
CoffeeNBooks I was glad to find out that Dolly was his nurse, and that she patiently read all of those letters to him. 4y

BethM Dolly and Mildred? The one who shared her secret. 4y

2. Who was your favorite character? Which viewpoint/narrative did you enjoy exploring or reading the most? ~ adapted from the Reading Group Discussion Questions #LiteraryCrew

CarolineLovesToRead I felt connected to Dolly the most. I was drawn into her story the most 4y
litenthusiast I really loved Dolly the most and enjoyed reading what happened to her. I also wished we got more of Clover's story, I really liked reading about their friendship. 4y
BethM I equally enjoyed Dolly and Loretta though Loretta took me longer to get into. 4y
Jerdencon I have to say I felt closest to Loretta - I understood her need to keep her sickness quiet and not having to deal with everyone else‘s emotions on top of her own. 4y
CoffeeNBooks I definitely felt more connected to Dolly, but toward the end of the book I understood Loretta a little more and started to like her storyline more. 4y

1. The novel is set in the years just after the Great War when social boundaries were changing and women, especially, were fighting for greater independence. What did you enjoy about this period? Was there anything that surprised you? ~from Reading Group Discussion Guide #LiteraryCrew

CarolineLovesToRead I love books set in the 20s 30s and 40s. Women are becoming their own persons and have such strength. I loved this time of theater and glamour. I love old hotels with history. I wish to visit The Savoy one day. 4y
BethM I loved how forward thinking Dolly and Loretta were- it was a surprise to me. I also love that Dolly chose career over going back to Teddy. 4y
Jerdencon I love books set at this time too - if I could go back in time it would be to then! It is nice to read about the changing times. 4y
CoffeeNBooks Women back then had so many obstacles in their way, so many rules imposed upon them. It's always inspiring to read about women from this time period who refuse to give up, and keep fighting for what they want. 4y

I really enjoyed this book. The book is set in the 1920s and is about a young woman who dreams of life on the stage. The story is told from three different perspectives, and the book addresses the hopes, dreams and heartbreaks of each character. This is one book I am really sad it ended because I really loved the character, Dolly. #LiteraryCrew
