Wishful Drinking
Wishful Drinking | Carrie Fisher
In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Warswhen only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabres." Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction and weathering the wild ride of manic depression. It's an incredible tale - from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, and from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Tried reading this after my last book and gave up half way. It‘s a stream of consciousness grasp at remembering the past after an unfortunate round of electric convulsion therapy for Carrie Fisher. I do believe she is a witty and talented woman but this read doesn‘t really offer her best work. A bit of a cheek that it even got published.

This was my selection for July‘s Titles and Tunes. A quick and humorous read - bittersweet knowing Carrie isnt with us anymore. Her personality shines here - what a vibrant, sharp and funny woman - and wow, her incarnation as Leia really did follow her for every day of her life. Loved the shade she threw about that!

Cinfhen Excellent choice! RIP 👑 9mo

So here is my choice for #TitlesandTunes ive been meaning to read this for ages! While Carrie wasnt a rock star herself she was married to Paul Simon so i think there‘ll be enough #sexdrugsandrockandroll. Also she was fascinating and smart and outrageous enough on her own account!
The song to go with is “Cheers (Drink to That)” by Rihanna. I think Carrie would approve 💕

Cinfhen Fun and clever!!! Love seeing a Rihanna song on this playlist 🙌🏻♥️ 10mo

Honestly this was kind of painful to listen to. Fisher rambles at points so it‘s hard to follow what she‘s talking about. She also yells quite a bit and seems awkward in her cadence almost as if she‘s waiting for the audience to laugh. Since the book is a transcript of her stage show that makes sense but it‘s weird to listen to. I do applaud her for her openness regarding her struggles with addiction and mental health.

CuriousG I loved this book in print, but tried on audio and wasn't a fan of it. 1y

I hear a lot about how great Carrie's shows and writing are, but I was a little underwhelmed with this audio. I think I would have liked more of a memoir, but this was an adaptation of a stage show. I mean, she opens saying that she had electroshock therapy and that it affected her memory, but that's it, and I'd be interested in learning more. Some amusing anecdotes, but overall a bit scattered.

I grew up watching Star Wars (the original three-I‘m old 😉) but knew very little about Carrie Fisher and her life. In this short audiobook she talks candidly and honestly-and always with a sense of humor-about her family, relationships, addictions, ECT, and mental illness.

Carrie Fisher (RIP) tells us about her life, which was a little less glamourous as we might think. She writes about her family, her mental health, and her addiction. Even though those are all very serious topics, she never looses her humour, and can laugh about herself as well. Carrie, you are being missed here...

This is really f*cking funny. I definitely recommend the #audiobook. She does voices and accents that definitely wouldn't work in the print version. Her impression of her mother is amazing. It's like her mom is talking when she does it. She is also pretty honest about mental health and addiction.

#BookSpinBingo free space (probably not a great sign that I'm already using one of these)

Twainy @monkeygirlsmama I loved the audiobook! I thought it was better than her “Princess” book. She seemed genuine. 3y
monkeygirlsmama @Twainy I think I listened to the audiobook as well. I do agree about her seeming genuine. Maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace at the time I listened to it too cause maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I was cause I do/did love Carrie Fisher.

I have always loved Carrie Fishers wit and humour, but I think there was too much sarcasm in this book for me. There wasn‘t enough genuine moments when she wasn‘t poking fun at her life and self. This review might be unfair because I have just finished 3 books from 3 brilliant comedians and she is weighing against their mix of funny and sincerity. I found parts very interesting, but I didn‘t love it.

Goodreads recommended this humorous bio/memoir/anecdotal stories book by Carrie Fisher to me. It‘s truthfully an odd recommendation, since I am not a Star Wars fan (don‘t hate me!), but I do read celebrity biographies and memoirs. I found parts of this to be tongue in cheek humor and other parts just to be okay. She candidly discusses her substance abuse problems, along with her and her family‘s marital issues. A quick listen. Just meh for me.

Librarybelle I‘m buzzing along for the final hours of #BBRC . I won‘t complete every prompt, sadly, but most will be done. This is my choice for #FoundonGoodreads #YeahBaby . 4y

I enjoyed this short, lighthearted, and humorous look at a heavy subject. I laughed out loud a few times about her relationship with her mother and growing up in the limelight, Star Wars, marriage to Paul Simon, her daughter and a life of addiction. She often describes herself as a fictional character. Kind of scattered, but I enjoyed the book read by Carrie Fisher.

caffeinated.wayfarer Her writing is amazing! “The Princess Diarist” is kind of 😬 at times. And I remember really liking her fiction, but it was a long time ago 4y
Cosmos_Moon @caffeinated.wayfarer looking forward to checking out more eventually. I think Postcards from the Edge will be next by her. She talked about this book in Wishful Drinking, and now want to read it. If guess it‘s a movie, too, so I‘ll have to check it out after I read. 4y

What a ride! This was surreal to listen to knowing when and how she ended up passing. I had no idea her humor was so dark. In fact, I didn't know anything about her other than that she was in star wars and family guy. This was dark and tragic and hilarious. So, 3 of my favourite things.

Scochrane26 I thought Shockaholic was even more surreal. She talks a lot about her father‘s death & how she was a caregiver for several friends, being there when they died. I hope she had a friend w/ her at her death but not sure she did. 4y
ShyBookOwl @Scochrane26 oh wow. I'll have to check that out. I'm not sure either. I believe she had a heart attack on a plane and died in the hospital a couple days later. 4y
Scochrane26 @ShyBookOwl it was on the plane, think she died before the hospital. Anyway, if you read it, you will prob have the same thought I did. 4y

Finished this short book while making a strawberry pie today and going to farmers market. I did audio because I wanted Carrie Fisher‘s narration (RIP). I enjoyed the stories about her family. Think I liked this more than Princess Diarist, just because I wasn‘t that interested in first part of PD. It was sad at times because I couldn‘t help thinking of her and her mother‘s deaths when she told family stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Megabooks Pie looks great! I‘ve been wanting to read this, too. 5y

This book is witty and clever, much like its author. No matter how dark the topic, from drugs to a gay man dying in her bed, she never made me sad enough to cry because she‘d quickly recover with some quick wit and make me laugh again. Excellent writing and an easy read. Highly recommend, especially to anyone who loves the Star Wars series.
