84, Charing Cross Road
84, Charing Cross Road | Helene Hanff, Frank Doel, Marks & Co
It all began with a letter enquiring about second-hand books, written by Helene Hanff in New York, and posted to a bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road, London. As Helene's sarcastic and witty letters are responded to by the stodgy and proper Frank Doel of 84 Charing Cross Road, a relationship blossoms into a warm, charming, feisty love affair. We follow, in her subsequent letters and in the shop's responses, the trial of one woman;s idiosyncratic path through English literature. Along the way, as Anne Bancroft notes in her introduction, our enjoyment in sharing. Hanff's literary eduction is deepened by the human story her letters tell as she grows ever fonder of her bookselling friends across the ocean.

This was the perfect read for a snowy Sunday afternoon. This is a collection of letters between Hanff and an English bookseller. The letters span almost two decades of correspondence between them. Charming and an interesting slice of life from post-WWII to 1969.

Helene Hanff #cherish (ed) her 20-year exchange of letters with Frank Doel of booksellers Marks & Co. Their friendship developed over the years, leading her travelling to London after Frank‘s death..a literary pilgrimage for Helene and homage to the dear man who inspired her. Hence, the book Duchess Of Bloomsbury Street, a journal she kept during her wonderful stay in London.

I‘ve read and enjoyed both charming books. #MOvember

First sentence of 84, Charing Cross Road doesn't disappoint: "Your ad in the Saturday Review of Literature says that you specialize in out-of-print books." But the second is MUCH better: "The phrase "antiquarian booksellers" scares me somewhat, as I equate "antique" with expensive. "

I read this on June 8th and gave it 3.5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. If anyone questions how we can form great friendships online with people we haven‘t met, refer them to this book. It‘s a collection of letters between Helene Hanff and the staff at a bookstore in London that starts in 1949 and lasts for 20 years.

I‘m going to be in London next weekend for a show and I may have a bit of time to putter around Stratford on the Sunday.
Anything you littens can recommend I do if I do get the time?

Susannah Is it too late? In Stratford, I really recommend the house where Shakespeare was born on Henley Street, and the church where he and his family are buried, Church of the Holy Trinity. Have a wonderful time! (edited) 7mo
Weaponxgirl @Susannah that‘s perfect! Thankyou 😊 I go down tomorrow and hopefully I‘ll get some time on the Sunday to do this. 7mo
Susannah Wonderful! I did want to add that there is a charge for entry at both places. The house is associated with the Birthplace Trust, and the church is its own entity because it‘s an active parish. Both have websites if you want to look in advance. 7mo
Weaponxgirl I never mind a fee as long as they aren‘t excessive. It obviously takes time and money to preserve these places. Thankyou again 7mo

A neat little volume of actual letters between American writer Helene Hanff and the employees of British bookshop between 1949 and 1969. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartening, sometimes sad. She didn't publish all the letters, so there are few gaps where previous letters are referenced that aren't included, but overall it was an interesting read

I did some #audiopaperwork this morning and finished listening to 84, Charing Cross Road! I loved the wittiness and somewhat irreverent tone of Hélène‘s letters and the replies she received from London. The fact that the whole situation revolves around books didn‘t hurt either. The ending was bittersweet, but it did not change my feelings about this correspondence. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Mehso-so

Unpopular opinion, but I found this book to be bland and predictable. A friendship that grew through ongoing correspondence, this is a collection of letters, full of obscure book requests and the quirky friendship that blossomed. I like that this is the type of book that can be appreciated by a book lover. I also appreciate how it was retold from a real life correspondence. I have a few friends that started as pen pals and see this as a dying art.

Zelma I adore this little book but I also love that readers can have so many different opinions. 11mo

I just adored this book, and can‘t believe I haven‘t read it before. The first part is a series of letters between Helene in NYC and the titular bookshop in London, spanning 20 years from the late 1940s, then in the early 1970s we hear Helene‘s account of her first ever visit to London, a place she has loved from afar. Maybe one of my favourites of the year....

What a cute book about a handful of people, who never met one another, that lived in the US and in England. They wrote cute, humorous, and bookish letters back and forth, which made me giggle and smile throughout the entire book 😊

Makes me wish I could‘ve been around during that time to visit the bookstore on 84, CCR.

Pickpick

Charming little (less than 100 pages) epistolary novel of letters between an American book buyer/lover and the employees of a second hand bookstore in London. Set over the course of two decades 1949 to 1969. #centuryreadchallenge
Image is of the London bookstore from the back of the book.

BookNAround I loved this one. 13mo
