jenniferw88 I love that Shardlake is disabled - especially for this time period, as it's not something I see very much of, even in contemporary fiction (but then I'm probably not reading the right type of books where this would be common). 4mo
LiseWorks Everyone is terrified of losing their status. I feel bad for Shardlake for having to work for Cromwell. I was sad that he was sore all the time. There are no meds to help him at this time. I felt bad for Mark because he had to marry a girl fit for his status and not for love. 4mo
The_Book_Ninja Now the dust has settled…it was OK, I feel I enjoyed it more now a few weeks have gone by. But I‘m not in a rush to read the next one. I didn‘t fall in love with any of the characters. Mark started out interesting but ended up being wet 4mo

Librarybelle I really enjoyed this. Sansom‘s writing really showcases the tensions of the time. The fact that Shardlake not only battles the political climate but his own physical disabilities makes for a very interesting, immersive story. 4mo
Daisey I thoroughly enjoyed this reread. I think part of that is my appreciation for the series though. I actually read Dark Fire first years ago and then went back to this one. I‘m really looking forward to rereading it as I think I did like it even more. 4mo
Mollyanna I enjoyed the novel. I think Sansom does a great job of setting the scene, using the time period and even nature to evoke tension and emotion. Shardlake is a great character. He is flawed, but I appreciate that. Looking forward to the next book. 4mo
OutsmartYourShelf I thought it was OK but it didn't bowl me over or anything. I've read better historical mysteries in respect of immersing the reader in the historical time period, but I never judge solely on the first book so looking forward to the second. 4mo
Deblovestoread I really enjoyed being in this time period again and I loved getting to know Shardlake. 4mo
dabbe I read this years ago (loved it) but couldn't believe this time that I couldn't remember “whodunnit.“ 🤪 Also, I liked Mark and his snarkiness less this time around. I adore Shardlake and all of his frailties and flaws, and I love that he willingly admits them as he is not only our Sherlock but our Watson as well. To those who didn't like it so much, I believe the second one was better. #fingerscrossed 4mo
BookWrym I enjoyed this my first read of this series. Shardlake is a great character and I like the time setting unusual for a Tudor novel not to start with Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn 4mo
AnneCecilie I‘ve read the entire series before and loved it so this is a reread. I love how Sansom is describing this area, so it feels like you‘re there with all the tension but also the daily life. 4mo
lil1inblue I really enjoyed my first read of this book. Shardlake is an interesting character. I also like the parallel of the dissolution of the monastery with the dissolution of Shardlake's faith in Reform. I have already started the second book, and I'm liking it more than the first already. 4mo
dabbe @lil1inblue Ooh, that's exciting! I hope to start this evening. 🤩 4mo
kwmg40 I decided not to reread this first book, since I'd read it only a couple of years ago. I loved the historical setting and characters but I didn't remember enough of the details to participate fully in the current discussion. Still, I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I'll be reading along with the rest of you once we get to book 3. 4mo
dabbe @kwmg40 I 💚 it! Whatever works for you is fine! Can't wait to read your thoughts on Book 3! 🤩 4mo
PageShifter I really adored the setting!! This made me think how I should reread some awesome books about this era. I loved the history! Reading this book was thought-provoking! 3mo
dabbe @PageShifter I have been addicted to the Tudor era since childhood. There are so many wonderful books out there about this time period! 🧡🩶🧡 3mo
PageShifter Yes there is!!! And I got myself obsessed again 😂 3mo

That feeling when someone tests covid positive towards the end of the work day… triggering multiple covid policies and all the rat tests expired yesterday…

🫠

Tested anyway and so far so good, new tests should turn up tomorrow.

IndoorDame 🤞🏼 10mo
Soubhiville Uh oh. Fingers crossed for you. 10mo
AmyG Hope you are negative. 🤞🏻 Two dear friends of mine just tested positive. 10mo

ravenlee Oh no! I hope you‘re okay and the new tests confirm it. 10mo

rubyslippersreads Good luck. 🤞 10mo
Ruthiella Agree, the out of date test should still work. Hoping you are all right. 🤞 10mo

LeahBergen I used a slightly out of date test and it worked well when I was Covid positive. 10mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeeRHarry, it‘s more that it‘s a little bit funny being just a day over the expiry. The email that went around said that they might not pick up the latest Covid variants. The email wasn‘t completely clear on who is considered a close contact either so idk. I barely had any crossover with that colleague, so should be ok. 10mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, I‘m assuming that the person who tested positive also used the same just out of date test… we all have the same, work provided ones. 10mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AmyG, this latest strain has claimed a couple of my friends and colleagues too - hope everyone is doing ok in the aftermath. 10mo

@BookmarkTavern

As a 5th grade hooked on Pippi Longstocking, I asked my teacher if I could read one of those books for the 1970s-done-to-death book report. She replied, “If it's not on the list, you can't read it.“ What a thing to say to a kid who loved to read!

I would love for children to experience a series of their own choosing so they can see why they're so fulfilling. 🧡💜💛

mabell The McGurk series by E.W. Hildick! Such fun mysteries, with great characters - smart go-get-em kids! 1y
BookmarkTavern Pippi is a delightful answer! Thank you for sharing! 1y
MissyD Pippi. I read all the pippi books. 😍😍😍. 1y

MissyD Teachers can kill a love for reading without meaning to do it. My son had to take those stupid AR TESTS in elementary school. The teacher decided that she would ASSIGN the books for them to read. But she didn‘t allow any chance for him to read what HE enjoyed and found interesting. 🙄. Now he hates to read 😢 1y

dabbe @MissyD Oh, the dreaded AR. We fought NOT to have that but lost anyway. I also hated reading after my Pippi episode, but I came back to loving it again when I got to choose my own books; I bet your son will end of the same. Just in case, I'll keep my #fingerscrossed 🤞🤩😍 1y
MissyD @dabbe he‘s 21. In college. So reading is not high on his list of fun things. 🙄😢. I hated having to force my students to take AR tests. I just let them read and take the tests. My son‘s school used their goal as a grade 🙄. Sooo not how AR was intended to be used. He never met his goal because he hated being “forced” to read things he didn‘t like. He wanted: sports/survival topics/historical fiction/war books 1y
dabbe @MissyD My love of reading didn't come back until after college, so there's still hope! 🤩 Too many textbooks to read during that time--just like high school. All of our elementary teachers use AR, but I don't know if they have to count the tests as a grade; I certainly hope not. 1y

Bookwormjillk Yay for characters I know. #RIPWoodhouse 1y
Librarybelle I rolled my eyes over Emma‘s scheming! 1y
See All 15 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle she never learns 1y
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead And you think she would have learned…😂 1y
ashlynn.majeske I agree. Can't she just learn for once? 1y
Deblovestoread London, a much bigger playground for Emma‘s tricks and I think Kitty shouldn‘t be thinking William Price is her beaux yet…. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Deblovestoread I‘m waiting for him to prefer Georgiana 💥 1y
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk #RIPColonelBrandon too. Where‘s Marianne???? 1y
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin right? I‘ll have to check my character list and see if she‘s on it 1y
willaful Surely there must be a nice, #noflannel wearing man for Marianne in this?

I'm also expecting William to prefer G, though I had previously thought she and James would be the match. Kitty and James certainly doesn't seem very likely. Who else is at a loose end, matrimony-wise?
1y
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead the whole time I‘m reading this I‘m thinking “oh no, is this going to go all J Geils band ‘love stinks‘ 🎶he loves her, but she loves him, and he loves somebody else, you just can‘t win🎶 also why does every chapter make me think of a song? 1y
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣 I love that! 1y
dabbe @BarkingMadRead I am, too! We already know she prefers him; it's hard to pin down Price's feelings though just yet. 1y

Chapter 5: my head is spinning and I had to #consultthegoogle #somuchdrama after a ton of drama, Lizzie gets Mary invited to Catherine‘s reception #enterMrYates #sosalty #sinsofthebrother #poorColonel #fingerscrossed #flashbacktoLizziesGarden #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade #almostcaughtup

Bookwormjillk I feel like I‘m going to have to re-read all the books now 1y
willaful I'm curious about Mrs. Grant's saying “If you only knew the real truth of the matter--if you only knew who had suffered and who was to be blamed!“ What do you suppose she's referring to? I don't think Mary should be blamed for her brother's actions but I also don't think that was the reason Edmund broke with her. I don't mind seeing Mary redeemed but I don't like her being whitewashed. 1y
See All 9 Comments
peanutnine @willaful I think that is just bias from Mrs Grant on her sister's behalf, seeing her heartache. I hope that Mary recognizes how she acted poorly and learned from it 1y
TheAromaofBooks I finally had to sit down and write out little mini family trees to help me remember who is who! Part of the problem is Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey are the two Austens I have read the fewest times and a LOT of the characters are from those two books!! 1y
ravenlee I was doing all right keeping everybody straight until Mr. Yates showed up. I knew, from the guide at the beginning, he was from MP, but I couldn‘t place him. When he became important, though, I got frustrated and had to look up “who the hell is Mr. Yates?!” 1y
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks brilliant. I‘m going to do the same so I don‘t wear the Google out 😅😂 1y
TheBookHippie @ravenlee 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😅😂🤷🏻‍♀️same. 1y
mcctrish Lady Catherine “I know things, but I‘m not telling you what! Suffice to say you should be ashamed. But I‘m not getting into it. So get out of my house and feel badly. And no I won‘t say why!” For the love of god, women, spit it out!!!! 1y

Guess who just accidentally permanently deleted all of her work-related emails from 6 years of (now ended) self-employment? 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope there was nothing vital in there. Guess I‘ll find out. Probably when HMRC come querying something.

For some reason I‘m not finding this pretty minimal white screen as calming as I maybe could. 🙀

Bookwormjillk I hope it works out for her. It‘s got to be better than waiting to die 🤷‍♀️ #LiterallyLoveSick 2y
Ruthiella Why does Rosalie even bother with this relationship with Agnes? Doesn‘t she have any friends of her own (hint hint I‘ll bet she doesn‘t because who can stand her unless they‘re paid to do so?) 2y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella for real, a person guaranteed to put up with your crap 2y
AllDebooks Why would you go? Would a chance meeting with Weston be worth putting up with Rosalie's nonsense? 🤔 2y
eeclayton @Ruthiella I guess she's just used to ordering Agnes around, and it's definitely easier than putting any effort into making real friends? 2y
peanutnine @Ruthiella exactly. She's probably only reaching out now cause she's bored and thinks Agnes has nothing better to do than entertain her 2y
dabbe I'd like to think that Agnes is like us and is curious to see how Rosalie has been faring. And she might care about Rosalie. A little bit. 2y
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣🤣 2y
mcctrish This was not what I thought was going to happen but Agnes needs a kick in the pants so it works for me 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @eeclayton That does make sense! I was wondering when Rosalie had shown any actual sign of the great fondness for Agnes she professes in this letter. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly Also, I love Rosalie being all “my baby is the best ever, I guess, I can‘t be bothered interacting with her” 😂 2y
willaful Maybe Rosalie is hoping that Agnes will be impressed with her luxurious new life, and that would make her feel a little better about how miserable she is? I wanted Rosalie to get hers but now I feel sorry for her. I'm still not sure she isn't going to cause more trouble though -- but we are pretty close to the end, so maybe not. 2y
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Yes! Not to mention the fact that “unfortunately, the baby is a girl”. Ugh! 2y
AnnR I'm not even sure why Agnes felt compelled to go. Agnes could have easily said she was busy helping her mother (which was true) and couldn't possibly visit. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair Yeah… unfortunately I‘m not even surprised by that attitude. Except for the whole “he will never forgive me” thing, which I hope is a joke because they‘ve got plenty of time to have a boy! 2y
