This book is about old timey lady boxers, it was pretty good.
Yeah - congratulations Christie 🥳🥳
1- Charles Dickens The Christmas Carole. We read is aloud every Christmas - it marks the start of our Christmas holidays.
2- The tagged book ... it‘s quite under the radar and a brilliant historical story involving female wrestlers and its gritty, well told and a real page turner.
Not my final edit - but here are just some of my #5starreads2020. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
A well plotted story set in eighteenth century Bristol, of female fighters, brothels, dockyards and slave traders. Fuelled by female anger and desperation, it's brutal and completely took me to the sawdust floored yards with blood and teeth flying in amongst spit and wagers. What I really loved was the use of language - as we duck fibs and despise the culls it adds brilliantly to the drama.
I‘m craving a story that I can get lost in - hoping this is it! 🤞🏼
I decided to bail when I found myself skimming. I had hoped that when I got to Charlotte‘s POV my interest would be revived, but I really don‘t like her either. I would read a whole book about Ruth if that were an option!
I‘m disappointed to be bailing on my second #NewYearWhoDis book 😐 @Sarz @monalyisha
I was very much enjoying this #NewYearWhoDis book until suddenly Ruth‘s POV stopped! I think I would be much more into George‘s section if I weren‘t missing Ruth. I hope we return to her. @Sarz @monalyisha
Discovered the recommendations feature on BookBub & have been recommending like crazy. Spreading the word about recent & not-so-recent fave reads, like this gem from Anna Freeman about 18th-century women pugilists. (Really!)
I‘ve catalogued the first two big stacks by the bed (pictured earlier today) in LibraryThing and bagged most of them to go to the lakehouse. The books pictured are either from our trip to The Strand this summer or I snagged them from my husband‘s big boxes of free books. He used to edit a sci-fi newsletter and still gets brand spanking new review copies. I picked these from his stacks to give away. Can you imagine?
I immensely enjoyed this book about women boxers in Victorian England. I can't say I have ever read a book like this one. Told from 3 POV's, each one unique and fascinating. Ruth, scrappy, tough, and resourceful, was by far my favorite. Thanks for the recommendation, @LoverofLit.

Marriage is an impulsive road trip to see my husband's dream car, which was just posted for sale a few hours away. I told him I would go, but he had to listen to my audiobook! Which is fantastic, so lucky him!
Holed up and hiding from the heat with this Very Good Book (disregard dakimakura)
“Beyond appearance, however, I found him lacking. He was too shallow to love, a pretty picture hanging upon a blank wall.”
I really enjoyed this one! It's fun and entertaining, and the characters of Ruth and Charlotte are pretty endearing. What annoyed me though was that it took about 300 pages to get passed the events referred to in the blurb, but then the "devastating consequences" were rushed through in the final 100 pages.
This book was absolutely lovely. I fell in love with the two female POVs, Ruth and Charlotte and when they finally meet, the storyline quickened and held me captive until the very end. The third POV. George furthered the story but didn't hold up solidly to the ladies. This was a book about the WOMEN, and the men around them who influenced their lives. This didn't have a happy fairy tale ending but instead was raw and realistic. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and 1/2 stars.
"I became a fury, a tempest, a swarm of bees." Badass female action in this book.

I'm not digging the second POV storyline as much as the first but Ruth was so solid and kickass, that I can understand why. I still do have a fondness for George Bowden, though I have a feeling his loyalties may be misguided. We shall see!

This one looked SO good I couldn't pass it up. I'm already in love with the narrator.

This was the book I received from Willoughby Book Club. I was glad it was a book I don't have, as was worried would get one I already have! #books #bookcovers #hardback #tbr #lovetoread #reading #bookcrazy #bookmad
Wildly entertaining. Fantastic characters, some truly exciting fight scenes, and excellent writing. I'm way into all the slang terms for hands/fists: "paws," "fives," "maulers"! This book kept surprising me & I loved it.
The audiobook is solid but has 3 separate narrators, one for each POV. Since the stories overlap they end up doing a voice for each character. The differences in their styles took me out of it a bit. I plan to reread in print.
I'm not sure what to say about this book. It's brutal, unexpected and I really really enjoyed it. Ruth grows up in a brothel, from where she's drawn into the world of female prize-fighting. Perry & Charlotte lose their family to the pox. And George gets by in his own way. With themes of dependency, poverty, class, unlikely friendships, making your own family & boxing, this made for an unusual but kind of wonderful read. Also kick-ass embroidery!
Perrie's relationship with his sister appears just #nasty. But when we see the world through her eyes, she might not be entirely sugar and spice and all things nice herself...

When you‘ve been out of town and all your books come in at the same time! #GiantBookHaul - still have a few more coming in!
And I only spent $9.99 of my own money on the extra #BOTM pick! 😊
Sounds like a great deal to me!
Unexpected consequences of audiobook listening: my accent will have well and truly have returned by the end of this. I can already feel my vowels broadening...
There was a lot more to this book than I thought there was going to be! I loved getting more than one POV in each situation--truly amazing how differently people remember things. The female characters had this amazing ability to be likeable and not timid and a little strong while still being historically realistic. The contrast between the classes was done really well and throughout. I do wish there had been more of the boxing/fighting scenes.
Historical fiction with female fighters? Yes please! 😱
Historical fiction about women in non-traditional situations (in this case boxing)? Sign me up! There were a couple places where the pacing was a bit off for me but overwhelmingly I really enjoyed this novel. It was a compelling narrative with interesting characters in complicated situations.
Today is my first day back to work after 2 weeks. I am not ready. 😫
Here‘s to strong coffee and the hope I can get some reading in during lunch today. 🤞
Such a fantastic read, and an unexpected conclusion. Loved it so much, I'm going to read it with my peepers next. It's definitely a great production by Audible, too. The actors never failed to deliver every line in this book, managing to keep me planted in the author's world the entire time. I only wish more pages were devoted to the sport of lady boxing in such a genteel era. Perhaps a sequel will bring more info about these brave brawlers.
Taking #fangsoutfriday a little bit of a different way...

I had a tough week at work this past week, so my boyfriend ended up surprisingly me with this gem today. ❤
He mentioned that he saw a thread online about this, and it seemed right in my wheelhouse. 😍
#bookmail today from my BookOutlet order (on the left) and a Barnes and Noble order (on the right). I was very happy to get a copy of War and Peace and The Divine Comedy.
I may have gone overboard (again) with my BookOutlet order.
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is @annamatopoetry's fault. The stack of Eloisa James is a #BlameItOnLitsy, because I found out what a cool person she is.
Got my #bookoutlet #bookhaul. 😍😍🙌🏻🙌🏻 I'm definitely picking one up once I finish this week's #gonewiththeclown selections. Any suggestions as to which one I should go with first?!
